Vibrant, fresh, and lively, with fully integrated tannins. Medium body with concentrated plum, blood, and mineral notes. Well-balanced; moderately long spicy finish. Paired well with grilled filet mignon.

The 2004 Fontenys 1er cru from Joseph Roty is a beautiful wine, and very accessible for a young Roty, bursting from the glass with a wonderful nose of wild plum and cherry, woodsmoke, grilled meat, game and soy, complemented by floral top notes of peony. The wine is deep, concentrated and well-focused, with beautiful purity and a firm core, but it is already wide open for inspection, and now seems like a good time to begin opening bottles. Other tasters who find this green are simply not using their noses, and are tasting the vintage's reputation not the wine.
