  • A blind tasting of pre-2000 Bordeaux and some experienced tasters guessed this to be much a much younger wine so it was a huge surprise when revealed. Drinking beautifully with all the elements in balance with excellent fruit and clearly an overachiever in this vintage. I have had a lot of 1982's and this compares very well with the better wines.

  • This St Julian is singing and at its peak. Just a fabulous wine in every way!

  • Wine was well stored, cork had a bit of mold on the outside, soaked through, pulled easy and in one piece. No discernible taint at all. Wine was decanted and left for 30 mins. Plenty of fruit, earth/mineraliaty and acid. Nose is pleasing with it opening and evolving over three hours. There is some note of medicine cabinet on the finish. I don’t think this is Brett as there is no other barnyard or wild notes. The wine is peaked and might be on the slight decline.

  • Wine dinner with friends at Union League Lafayette Hill.

Tasted 3 vintages of Gloria (1982, 2010 magnum, 2011), had 2016 and 2018 as back up planned but not tasted on this night.

    Also tasted 1978 Chateau Figeac.

For many, the 1982 Gloria was the WOTN. It is the best bottle of 1982 Gloria I have had for many years. Back in the day, it was better with more fruit but it has beee well cellared and this bottle was fabulous.

Cork came out flawlessly with the Durand and was only half soaked, looked very good. Decanted briefly thinking there would be a lot of sediment but there was not. Color surprisingly dark but of course much more crimson with some red-orange bricking compared with the almost black 2010 and the dark purple 2011. Color reflecting the age and character of these three vintages. All were great, the 2010 was decanted several hours and was best at the end of the meal (and even on day 2 when some was left overnight). The 2011 is in its sweet spot and the most appropriate wine for current drinking and an underrated vintage for sure. The 1982 opened almost immediately to a lovely aroma of forest and tobacco and all the aged St. Julien goodies on the flavor with just enough stewed red fruits hanging on. Finish was medium length. Drink up. Hope you have a bottle that aged as well as this one.
