Tertiary characteristics are noticeable. Cigar box, old leather, sweet red berries, blackberries, dried black fruit, slight sweet spice, some mint. Definitely smells old. Smells like being at my grandma's house.
Fresh and silky with a soft body. Wild raspberries, cassis, amd black cherry notes. Mint, leather, and chalkiness on the midpalate, ending on a long mineral and fruity finish. Lively acidity with creamy tannins, this wine shows great finesse and balance.
I think it still has quite a bit of life left and will continue to be an enjoyable experience for another decade.

From double magnum, ex chateau Surprisingly fine even delicate. Cedar and cigar box, very pretty red berries. In great shape and not sending but probably near peak.

Bordeaux 2000 & 2001 Horizontal (Piccolino, Exchange Square, London): Suspect very low level cork taint here that just dulls what would otherwise have been a cracking 2001. There is a pickle brine edge to the red fruited nose. A little tapenade too. Palate feels mature and tannins pretty much resolved. Would love to try a clean bottle in a couple of years.

Neil's 2000 & 2001 Bordeauxs (Piccolino, London): Single blind with the 2000. Dark red. Muted on the nose versus the 2000, which I think would be expected but some more sensitive nasal passages than mine declared low-level taint. I wasn't sure, it seemed to be drinking fine, with all the hallmarks of aged claret, albeit behind the other wine (and it is true that the gap widens with time, even if both were opened mid-afternoon). I liked this, a different profile to the 2000 that also delivers pleasure especially with food, but the 2000 was several streets ahead.

Neil’s 2000/01 Bordeaux @ Piccolino: Single blind. Slightly herbal nose. Question re TCA — not obvious given it was double decanted four hours previously, but there is an edge that’s aunt there when opened. A bit herbal and clipped. ?2001 ***1/2 at best, and atypical, so probably low level TCA.

First aged Bordeaux in my wine journey.
Ruby red color with a slight brickish rim.
