Avery Family Cellar Inaugural Wine Dinner - Really old wines (Eddie V's - Tysons Corner, VA): The softest and warmest nose of the night. Shy red fruit, plum, dry orange peel, a slight hint of cassis, smoke, a hint of madeira, cedar and leather. Medium concentration, warm and soft, cedar and shy red fruit driven palate impression and a medium finish with the dry orange peel and cedar at the end. Definitely past its peak but still enjoyable.

Domaine de Chevalier Magnum Dinner (Restaurant Taillevent, Paris): This did not have the big nose of the '16, and instead was more floral with lilies and straw. The palate was quite sweet with ripe red berries and cherries. The tannins were still strong and nice acidity. Beautiful wine.

Brownish red. Notes of plums and orange truffle. Deliciously fresh and round in flavour. Perfectly mature, as it has probably been for 40 years. No sign of descension. The wine was medium bodied, and slightly rustic. No hard edges to be noted, but plenty of drinking pleasure. The finish, although somewhat short, was nice and round - balanced and harmonious.

Farnsburg Rarities: Out of Magnun: butter, herbs, scent of swiss stone pine (Arve), cinema-popcorn. This was a show-stopper!
