Double decanted in the AM. Drunk over several hours at dinner.
A deep nose, with more floral perfume than the other vintages of Crichet Paje with tar, , balsam, rose, and dark nebbiolo fruits. Rich, dense and sappy on the palate, yet all in harmony. Rich yet balanced, very deep and powerful yet approachable. This has a great combination of breadth, depth, and palate impact all with balance. Outstanding and will be better in 10 years.

1998 Barolo and Barbaresco Retrospective; 3/24/2018-3/31/2018 (Ai Fiori): I enjoyed this in 2006 at a trade tasting but...how well can you really taste something like this beauty from a small sip in a crowded room...This was my WOTN. By preference perhaps, by a hair... by the fact that it took no prisoners. Certainly the most masculine wine of the flight, maraschino cherry nose, earthy, powerful, stunning... mid is ripe but staying cherry, but more aggressive structure and mineral, earthy core. How can it stay "light" and yet show this strength? I could not stop drinking this. Impressed? more like blown away. It took on 3 Giacosa wines and came away with a win.

NY Vinous group, ‘98 retrospective. Double decant followed by 6 hour slo-o. One of the wines of the tasting. Beautiful balance, complexity and lengthy and elegant finish.

1998 Barolo & Barbaresco – A 20-year retrospective (AI Fiori): The nose was dark and earthy, opening with crushed stone, dried roses and undergrowth, but then evolving to show spiced cherry and masses of dried florals. It was wonderfully soft upon entry, displaying fleshy black cherry and plum with saturating earthy mineral tones and a wave of balanced acidity. The finish was long, as the Chichet Paje flexed its remaining structural muscle with hints of grippy tannin, saturating tart cherry, and a lingering note of bergamont. What an amazing wine.
