Drinking at the top of its game. A huge nose of dark fruits, smoked meats, musk and earth. Rich and powerful, deep and long. Velvety of texture and finishes with some tannic chew.

Burgundy Theme Dinner at La Barca (La Barca): Popped and drank from bottle over 3 hours. Appearance is clear, pale intensity, ruby colour. Legs. Nose medium+ intensity, with aromas of very savoury soy sauce, earth, leafy forest floor, blueberry. (Over)developed. On the palate, dry, medium+ acidity, medium alcohol (13.5%), fine integrated medium tannins, medium+ body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of dominant umami soy sauce, earth, blueberry, blackberry, sour red cherries, sour plums, slight spice. Long savoury soy sauce finish. Initially just all soy sauce. At least some of the inner flavours did surface with more air. Though in my opinion this is clearly over the hill. Not rated.

The nose is all game and undergrowth. The palate builds. It starts off savoury and takes on red and black fruits. It has notes of iron and meat and is strong and forceful yet light on its feet The finish is expansive and there's a line of minerally acidity that swarths straight down the middle of the wine and carries all flavours. Seriously good Chambertin.

Once again, bad bottles can ruin the experience and totally mislead the unlucky consumer and those who read useless comments. I have served this classic grand cru to knowledgable fans of great burgundies 3 times in the last year, with excellent results in all cases. The first 2 from 750s showed deep red color, lively bouquet and classic balance between the ripe tannins and secondary fruit flavors. The latest bottle (1.5 l) was truly magnificent, comparable to a '90 La Tache tasted awhile ago. Provenance was clearly the issue as these were purchased on release 25+ hrs ago and stored under perfect conditions!

Musique & Vin Festival BYO Dinner with Musicians (1243 Bourgogne Society - Beaune): Small glass. Dense combination of fresh and mature black fruits with an intense meaty, gamy character. Lots here, all working well together. Trapet 1988s certainly took a long time, but they have reached a wonderful place (if well stored).
