Served blind at Omar's birthday dinner, darker than the Rousseau Charmes 2010 drunk before this, more gamey, mushrooms, complex nose, stunning Burgundy, sublime wine, mature, licorice after 1.5hrs, from old vines 94

Christopher Prain's Mature Burgundy Dinner @ Ten Bells (Upstairs @ The Ten Bells): No formal notes on this. It was served in the context of a superlative flight of wines and struggled to make its voice heard. Darker fruits. Mature. Lacks a bit of precision. Still very nice and would have been a real treat if drunk on its own but hard to compete against the Pousse d'Or and Bachelet.

Old Burgundy dinner at home (London): The colour showed the merest hint of age. The nose was quite closed to start with but, as it developed in the glass, turned out glorious, with a flowery side on top of sweet incensey notes. Sweet cherry and other dark red fruit and a velvety texture. Long finish. Beautiful wine.

I don't have a lot of experience with the '89s, but this certainly was an excellent bottle. Opened three hours before dinner and given the small pour treatment. Cork crumbled a little but the seal was decent. Color was a slightly cloudy, light ruby red with an orange undertone but hardly any bricking. Nose was red-fruited with an earthy undertone. Not much funk. The texture was silky and full; easily the best feature. The wine tasted surprisingly fruity (red cherry, cranberry and strawberry) and youthful on the tip of the tongue. Through finish I found mild spice, juicy acidity and a hint of brambly tannins remaining. A delightful wine.
