  • The '89 BdV was a treat to taste as Vajra is one of my favorite producers, but it's very difficult to source older bottles. The wine was enjoyable and educational as it clearly reflects a more rustic style of winemaking compared to the incredibly elegant wines produced at Vajra today, but it has held up nicely. On the nose, I found red cherry fruit, red roses, dark sweet brown spices, earth, and anise. On the palate, the wine was medium-bodied with dried red cherry and earth initially, which were complemented by notes of anise and raw meat towards the back end. The texture of the wine was slightly rustic with drying tannins remaining on the finish, seemingly unlikely to fully integrate.

  • A Bricco delle Viole Vertical with Giuseppe Vaira (Fausto, Brooklyn, NY): [Double decanted at 11am.] Floral nose of red and black fruit and licorice and tar. Gorgeous and expansive in the mouth. Tannins still present, but those classic 1989 appealing tannins. Maybe the WOTN.
