  • The '14 Baudana is a good example of this vintage, which I'm a big fan of personally.

The nose is fresh and vibrant, with sweet red florals and red cherry fruit, chalk, orange peel, menthol, and anise. On the palate, the wine is tight and strict at this stage, a contrast from the aromatics which are pretty open. It is a medium bodied wine with high acidity, but the tannins are firm and clenching at the back end at this point. A wave of chalky red cherry fruit and red florals sweeps across the palate, while I found the fruit tones turning a bit darker towards dark red fruit alongside licorice and menthol notes towards the finish.

With another 5-10 years in the cellar, this should be a very nice wine. What I'm not sure of is whether the tannins will soften while the vibrancy of the fruit remains, it is possible this will remain a bit of a tannic wine during the ideal drinking window of the flavor profile.

Day 2 Update: On day 2, the '14 Baudana was much silkier on the palate, while the wine remains vibrant and full of fruit, which is promising for the prospects of this wine over time. It lacks the concentration perhaps of the best years, but the flavor profile is so pure with red fruit and red floral tones. and this is such an easy wine to drink (alcohol is a 'classic' 13.5%).

  • It needed the five hour decant and even then still revealed plenty of tannin.
Dark color, quite full bodied for a Barolo and not particularly elegant, it has enough flavor to be enjoyable with a little bitterness on the finish. 70% of the bottle was left after being extracted 6 months earlier by Coravin and was in perfect condition.

  • As often happens this Barolo was not ready, even after 10 hrs in the decanter. Still stringent. I had better Baudanas. 90 points is good enough.

  • Popped and poured. Tar and tart dark fruits on the nose. On the palate, 90%+ dark chocolate, espresso, dark fruits. Huge tannins and waves of acid...massive structure and fairly powerful. I didn’t really expect this from a 2014. I love this and it’s definitely worthy of some cellar time.
