Community Tasting Notes (7) Avg Score: 91.8 points

  • I did not know what to expect from this wine, as I never had a Clos du Marquis or a Bordeaux from 2017 either. But this turned out very well! Dark fruited and sweet, a kiss of french oak and already quite some sous bois. Medium-bodied, but flavourful, polished with a soft texture and the tannin melting away. 27% Merlot and I would say you can taste it. While the wine feels only moderately structured and on a faster aging curve, my group agreed, that it is simply delicious now. The score may be high, but this is the beauty of catching a wine at peak. Drink confidently until 2027+.

  • Medium deep ruby color. Elegant, sensuous but not lurid nose with dancing notes of fresh black cherry, warm oak, soft pepper and after-the-rain forest floor. Dry, bright acidity, chewy tannins, palate follows through with dark chocolate and plum notes. Medium full body. Very good smooth balance. Medium finish but one can’t help but wish it had more depth and nuance.

  • Delicious wine. After 2 hour decant, this really came into balance, sanding off the tart notes that were coming through on the intial taste. Despite 2017’s reputation as a weaker left bank year on the whole, this wine really shines. Last Clos du Marquis I had was the 2005, which I had in Paris in 2013… it was excellent. In this 2017, there is bright non-overbearing acidity to start, then some jammy fruit briefly, then really balanced tannins on the long finish.

  • Surprisingly light on its feet, with an elegant feel start to finish. A wine of some contrasts - structured yet voluptuous, energy with tension, bright flavors with an unexpected density. Not giving up a great deal on the nose, what is there is red flowers, cherry, earth and a bit of salinity. In the mouth there is a zingy raspberry flavor and sensation that predominates with a finish that belies that energy - a lovely elegance. Dark cherry and red plum on the finish along with a feel of fine tannins carrying into a lengthy finish. It is difficult to predict what’s going to happen to this wine other than it should last for years. But it is appealing right now.
One note of caution that is concerning. On day two this was flat and uninteresting.

  • This radiates, with fresh cherries, hope chest, green tobacco leaf, plums, leather and wet earth. Fine tannins and a plush, full body. Quite open, yet will age well; there’s a welcomed expansiveness. Classy, and the finish is medium in length. Drink 2023 - 2038.
