Community Tasting Notes (1) Avg Score: 87 points

  • The cork had become one with the bottle and broke off as I was removing it. I managed to pull out the lower half without any additional damage. Amazingly vibrant color, given it's age. Lighter to mid-bodied, the wine had a brown tinge to it, but still a lively red undertone that still showed signs of life. The nose was incredibly reserved, and almost reductive at first. The wine itself was very light, almost thin, and had a bit of a cranberry streak to it with with a hint of cassis and some faded chocolate on the finish.

It's difficult to rate this wine, as from a pure wine tasting perspective, the wine appeared to be several years past its prime. It was, by no means, a poor bottle (hence the 87), but you could tell that it would have shown much better in its youth. That said, the experience of sharing it with a friend who was given it as a gift for a birth year wine (my wife's birth year, as well), was fantastic and something I will not soon forget. To me, this is the true meaning of sharing wine - the story is as important, if not more, than the wine itself.
