Popped at D’s for NYE. Another lovely Roagna, this time the regular Paje. A dialed back version of the Vecchie Viti but no less enjoyable. Intensely perfumed. Has that trademark funk and crystal clear deep ruby cherry fruit which I’ve now come to associate with this maker. It is sensual, voluminous, full of roses, tar and lovely fruit. Full bodied, persistent and grippy tannins. Can feel the alcohol at the back.

Barolo and Barbaresco 2014s at Terra Rossa (Terra Rossa, London N1): Served a little warm initially. Nose showed dark fruits and a little spice and on the palate round tannins and dark fruit. Seemed to improve in the glass (the glass was put in an ice bucket to cool it a bit!). Did not seem as accomplished as the Albesani served alongside.

2014 Barolo and Barbaresco (Terra Rossa): I expected this to vie with the Monvigliero for my favourite wine of the evening, but sadly the Pajè didn't elevate itself to that level. Even paler to look at than the Albesani, but actually richer and less elegantly poised. Broad red fruit and silky tannin, but not much in the way of complexity until some pretty, floral character eventually revealed itself (at which point I upped my score). Wasn't helped by being served pretty warm, and maybe not quite a perfect bottle - or perhaps just too young.
