Community Tasting Notes (1) Avg Score: 99 points

  • Bin 28. High Shoulder. Bloody hell. Where do i start. I dragged this out of my cellar to share with the boys. I have had old Tahbilks before and mostly are fantastic but always some reservations with 50+ years wines. So some curio interest but thought i would try it anyway. Im speechless from here on. Ok i will have a go at describing it then.
Deep red, rich, fat, sweetly fruited , rustic but complex and oily in the mouth. Nose developed into a earthy sweet bordeaux from the Cabernet grape showing through. Obviously a step up in quality over a standard 1964 Cabernet. What an amazing wine. One of the best ive ever had. it silenced the room and focussed everyone's attention in an instant. Fatsie performed cork surgery brilliantly and had a huge smile on his face when first smelled. Some went into my glass and i only had one thing to say to him - "100/100". So why a score of 99?. After 30 minutes and well called by Cliff and is often the case with very old wines, the drinking window can be short. in 30 minutes it dropped off the back palate by a hairs breath. But only a nutter like me would be so critical. It didnt fall any further. So 99 or 100 or 101 who cares. it was just mesmerizing. I just do not see them making wines like this today despite some clever marketing and big prices for 1860 vines and other reserve wines. A real special treat and glad the boys were there to drink it with.
