Dark gold color, this wine is liquid butterscotch on the attack. Intense viscosity and long finish, this is as massive as DRC Montrachet. Power more than grace here, reference standard quality for this style. What an honor to partake...

This is a great, great wine – it was from a bottle that had a very good fill, and the cellar must have been damp as the label had mostly been destroyed. It was moderately brown in color from age – and on the palate, wow, what a wine! Liquid gold with minerals that are to die for…. But in the mid-palate there is some astringency that Allen says is classic for the 1978 white vintage. So smooth and luxurious…. A treat!

The Paulee de Hersh (Casa Hersh): The 78 Leflaive was also controversial. On opening, there was a slightly odd sense to the wine. Not corked, just, well odd. We put it into a decanter, and it had three or four hours of air before it was poured. A great wine, with an amazing core to it, notwithstanding the slight oddness that for me never fully went away. Jim and Chet loved it, so we'll go with their judgment - great stuff.

Vieux Telegraph at Chez Moi: No notes taken. This wine had a split personality -- an unpleasant nose and an extremely nice taste. The nose had a nice lemon and mineral component that was obscured by stinky cheese/Dijon aromas. In the mouth this is a heavy-weight with perfect balance and layers of flavor and a very nice finish.

Tasting Group Dinner - Vieux Telegraphe (Dave's House): A bottle that Brad bought at auction. I've never had a white wine like this before. Deep amber color. Very complex, and somewhat odd nose: apricots, overripe cantaloupes, Dijon mustard, and a stinky sour milk/cheese character that never completely blew off. The palate is soft and still lively, and even in its advanced state, shows steely minerality that is unmistakably Chevalier-Montrachet. This was strange and over-the-hill, yet also fascinating and captivating. Thanks Brad for sharing this!
