  • Decanted for two hours, but serially checked and then consumed over two hours. Burgundy core color with a maple syrup penumbra. Aromas of warm blackberries and currants. Satiny entry. Any oak is integrated. On the palate, it starts with a chalk wash, a good swish in the mouth evokes flecks of white pepper, with a spice finish. Still some cut on the finish. This is in a good place.

  • Very nice, floral, Mongeard Mugneret nose. Soars from the glass. Very red fruit. Nice flavors, strong acidity, still young, but excellent red fruit core with a long finish. This is transitioning from young fruit to mature and I am going to keep my remaining bottles for a couple of years before finishing them. Really enjoyed this. Flavors are classic Monegeard Mugneret, which is to say not subtle (especially around the use of oak) but well integrated and delicious.

  • floral notes with sour cherry, orange-rind middleweight silky flavors, earth, minerals and nice finish. Fairly seamless silky wine that is not overly complex but quite enjoyable.

  • Spring 06 TAC Vendor Sale (Tokyo American Club): Certain producers perform reliably for me according to type. My limited experience with Mongeard Mugneret is that the wines are always in balance and nicely typical, but simply lack that little bit of excitement that makes me want to buy the more spendy grands or better premiers crus. There is reasonable concentration and structure to this wine, though it is a little easy for the vintage. Fruit is a mix of red and dark berry fruit and there are the requisite small hints of nascent spice and flowers. The finish is maybe a little weak, but even that’s okay. This just seems to lack that last bit of punch and depth to make it really exciting. ($51.41 at bottle lot)

(Mongeard-Mugneret Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Orveaux) Bricking medium red color with clear meniscus; nice sous bois, strawberry, roses and soy sauce nose; tight, tangy, red fruit, mineral tart strawberry and roses palate, but seems to be on an advanced evolutionary path; medium-plus finish
