2021 seems to be a very good vintage for Conterno’s Barbera. While the alcohol is the same as 2020 at 15.5% and at the limits of what I want to drink, I find the ‘21 to be a bit fresher and more classic. As usual, I am a big fan of the flavor profile here, but a single glass is better than a bottle and it’s best served on the cooler side given the alcohol content.
The nose was beautiful with juicy dark red fruit, lavender, gravel, and spices. This shows a nice combination of sweet primary fruit, minerality, and the fresh lavender / purple note adding intrigue. On the palate, this is a very concentrated, rich Barbera with dark red and purplish fruit, sweet spices, and minerality, but the high acidity and finessed tannins make this quite drinkable already. It feels more classic than I recall the ‘20, even if the alcohol content is really the same.

My general take on barbera is that it is often too high in alcohol and too lacking in finesse to be a wine I want to drink a bottle of. With that context, my impression was that I am a big fan of the '21 Barbera from Conterno, as the finesse and balance of the wine stood out. I should have asked the alcohol level, but my guess is it is lower than 2020's 15.5%, with the wine showing more energy and a lighter texture than the 2020, which I have tasted twice recently from bottle and found delicious but difficult to drink more than a glass or two of. The flavor profile of the '21 seems to be classic Barbera Francia, with juicy black cherry, lavender, and sweet spices.

Ripe yet fresh nose, deep fruited, floral and spiced. Full bodied on the palate with excellent balance of acidity. A serious, structured wine with excellent lift. Impressive balance of power and poise. Seamless. This is fuller styled Barbera than I prefer, but it's pretty hard to deny the fantastic quality here. Barbera for Barolo lovers done so well 4

Visit to Giacomo Conterno: Very brief impression tasting at the winery, from barrel.
