Side by side Griotte. I brought the 96 Dugat and a friend brought the 96 Fourrier with neither of us knowing what the other was going to bring. Amazingly, they were nearly identical with both showing delicious red fruit (cherries, raspberry and currant) with a touch of sous bois and a brightness of flavor that was very appealing. Wouldn't call these blockbusters but really classic, red fruited burgundies that would please almost anyone.

A 'Lost Cellar' wine the 96 Griotte is a pristine bottle of wine with a deep cherry red colour with lovely clarity and a nose of red and dark cherry, raspberry, hung game and stones. The palate is attention grabbing with a terrific forepalate of cherries, raspberry and wild strawberry leading into touches of game and stone characters that then fade a little into the finish. There is just of touch of 96 acidity but it does attenuate the finish somewhat leaving you looking for a bit more at this level. However the pristine nature of the wine and the development of a lovely and complex nose are a reminder of why we cellar Burgundy.

Wonderful, expansive and expressive nose. There are sweet berries, violets, earth and spice. The palate has the good structure of the vintage but there's also a vinous sweetness and it has good shape. Just starting to enter a very long drinking window I suspect.

A glorious bottle of wine. Mature colour, light but bright. Nose intense and mineral at first then blossomed and soared from glass. No need to put nose in the burgundy bowl as the aroma wafted far beyond. Tight fruit, sous bois waves of complex aromas, just fabulous. Very intense and mineral on palate, magnificent balance and persistence with a finish that went on and on. Brilliant awe inspiring wine which , because of the 1996 acidity and structure will last.
