In April 2014 I opened a bottle and said wait 5-10 years. Splitting the difference, I have now opened another bottle. This is a wine of surprising elegance for a Rugiens and even would be for the Pézerolles. Rugiens dustiness and earth with red fruits on the mouth in a medium-light body, good freshness but no power or wildness. Food match is not easy -- I found it went well with an Gouda of some age, and I would stick to a single cheese, not too aggressive. Certainly nothing like a meat dish that I would have expected to be the match. Cellared since original release.

Brick ruby. Certainly a wine of some pedigree, but no crowd pleaser. Dark, dusty strawberry and cherry fruit. Iron, damp soil, sous-bois, Darjeeling tea, dried flowers. A wealth of nuances, yet fleeting. Puts on weight with air. The palate is lean, autumnal, slightly volatile and extremely long. Tannic, but nothing harsh. Huge complexity, but everything is delivered with a whisper. A meditative wine!

Cool red fruit, menthol, and crushed stone on the nose are met by a streak of iron on the palate. Lightweight, lacking midpalate density or length on the finish, I don't think this has the stuffing to go much longer, which is unfortunate as I suspect this was another 1996 that only recently offered any accessibility. Drink over the next few years.

This was the last vintage for which Hubert de Montille had responsibility for the wines (which he had shared with Etienne for a number of years). Unlike many 1996s I've had recently, this wine clearly needs more time. Yet, it is not completely shut down -- the iron of the Rugiens du Bas comes through and there is a smooth, wiry texture to the wine. Still, I'll wait 5, maybe 10, years until I open the next bottle.

Extremely closed. Nice tannins. Very tart. I guess this has to be stored another 10 years.
