Introduction

A really enjoyable night of good wine and good friends. Big thanks to Matt and Tim at Weygandt for hosting us! I can honestly say, that from top-to-bottom this was probably the most educational wine tasting I've ever been to. Such a wide range of wines were tasted over the course of the night with some real superstars. It'll be fun to do this again soon!

Flight 1 (11 Notes)

  • 1998 Ployez-Jacquemart Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut 90 Points

    France, Champagne

    (5/17/2010)

Light yellow color with a fresh nose. Good amount of lemon zest on the nose with some essence of slightly toasted nuts. Very lively blanc de blancs, bursting with citrus and specifically lemon flavors for me. The finish was very big, and overall I was very impressed with this effort.

  • 2007 Domaine Servin Chablis 1er Cru Butteaux 86 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

    (5/17/2010)

Probably the darkest young Chablis I've ever had. Nose was loaded with tropical fruits, seashells, honey and fresh cut grass. There was also a faint funk that was described by someone else as "standing about 5 feet outside a gym locker room." The wine itself was a bit juicy and while the body of the wine was more in line with bigger rieslings, it didn't have the bracing acidity and minerality that I typically look for with chablis.

  • 2008 Domaine Servin Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

    (5/17/2010)

This is a very ballsy chablis. Intense "low-tide", crushed rock, and lemon zest scents immediately jump out of the glass. No doubt that this is a young chardonnay, but already it's showing the juggernaut that it'll eventually mature into. It's palate is completely fresh with amazing acidity and balance. Despite PREMOX fears, I'd guess that this should be put away for a couple years or decanted for a couple hours prior to enjoying.

  • 2007 F.X. Pichler Riesling Smaragd Ried Steinertal 95 Points

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau

    (5/17/2010)

A remarkable effort. This could potentially be the most fascinating and educational wine I've had over the past 2 years. The nose exploded with green watermelon rind, and spicy lavender. The mid-palate just oozes class with ripe peaches, pears, tart apple core, and crushed rocks. Way way in the back, there was already an interesting petrol component that while subtle, was intoxicating. The finish was magical with the supple richness of the fruit giving way to such a high level of acidity that it almost felt like getting kicked in the teeth by a donkey....really unexpected. I expect aged rieslings to elicit feelings like these, but with a bottle that's so young many of us were floored by its complexity and class at such a young age.

  • 2007 F.X. Pichler Grüner Veltliner Smaragd 'M' 95 Points

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau

    (5/17/2010)

Another great effort from Pichler. Interestingly, the nose had a good amount of pepper, tobacco, and mint! Great, great nose all around. The nose gave way to tropical fruits, a bit of wet fur, and fresh cut grass. Extrodinarily dense, the finish on this wine was endless. Great bottle.

  • 2007 Albert Mann Gewurztraminer Furstentum Vieilles Vignes 88 Points

    France, Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru

    (5/17/2010)

A very complex wine. Nose was filled with honeycomb, blood orange and baked figs. The sugar level on this wine was approaching where my comfort level is, but the acidity and quality of the fruit held it at an acceptable level. A little flabby, I thought this was just an inch or two too much for me. Really nice bottle!

  • 2003 Edmond Vatan Sancerre Rouge 89 Points

France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre Rouge

    (5/17/2010)

This wine is hilarious. Decanted for about 8 hours or so, it tasted like it was from the 2010 vintage and had just been opened. TIGHT wine. Nose was absolutely dominated by tobacco. It reminded me of mint chewing tobacco. I really didn't pick up anything else besides tobacco. The wine itself was a bit awkward and most people at the tasting wasn't sure what to make of it. For me, the nose was absolutely a revelation - I had no idea that pinot noir could smell like this...just absurd - and we're not talking about the elegant tobacco that is seen with bordeaux and rhone wines...this was in your face tobacco! Interested to try this in a couple years, but at this price am afraid to play.

  • 2005 Domaine des Lambrays Morey St. Denis 87 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis

    (5/17/2010)

Good ruby color. Nose exhibited chocolate covered cherries and a bit of musty earth. Medium-bodied pinot, that was big and ripe. The wine has very nice balance and I can imagine this developing into a more elegant wine a couple years down the road. Relatively simplistic at its core.

  • 2007 Schiefer Blaufränkisch Ried Reihburg 90 Points

    Austria, Burgenland, Südburgenland

    (5/17/2010)

Overwhelming nose of raspberry compote. There were subtle spices, herbs and floral notes - but I couldn't really get past the raspberries! A delicious wine that was a bit too forward for my palate...I can totally understand why people love this though. Very well made, elegant and balanced as well.

  • 2001 Domaine Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    (5/17/2010)

Certainly a classy effort from Charvin. Displays classic 2001 CdP flavors of figs, pepper, espresso and dried herbs. This wasn't as funky as some 2001 CdP's at this stage, but I think that will make it more approachable for a lot of people. The mouthfeel was great, absolutely silky. It effortlessly transitioned into a dense, long, profound finish that was filled with candied cherries and meat. Really nice bottle!

  • 2006 Yann Chave Hermitage 88 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

    (5/17/2010)

Nice nose of roasted herbs, plums, cherries and cassis. There was also a subtle meatiness that I really liked too. Despite it's classy structure, it lacked much of the spiciness that I pine for in northern rhone syrahs.

My WOTN was really a tie between the two FX Pichlers. Wow. Stunning wines.
