Introduction

Neil was our host this month for what turned out to be a terrific tasting. We had ten tasters this month for a total of 360 possible points. A couple of warm ups, one blind, prior to the main tasting, and quite a few nice wines afterwards with dinner.

Flight 1 - Warm ups (2 Notes)

The Graville was served blind, the Bonville, served after the Graville, nonblind.

  • 2007 Château Graville-Lacoste Blanc 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves

Citrus aromas dominate, underlying hint of dried grass. Apple and citrus flavors with bright acidity, picking up a minerally quality with time in the glass. Lengthy finish. Guessed white Bordeaux.

  • NV Franck Bonville Champagne Grand Cru Brut Rosé 92 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

A blend of 90% Chardonnay and 10% Pinot Noir. Deep pink color. Aromas of berry and melon. Terrific acidity, with lovely red berry and mineral tones on the palate. Fine bead with a lengthy finish, picking up the slightest hint of toast and cream soda.

Flight 2 - Main tasting (8 Notes)

These were great. Most were bright yellow and quite a few had a greenish tint. It wasn't long before I pegged these as white Burgs, and I correctly identified them as 2008s, although I felt we had a nice mix of 1ers and a Corton or two- I didn't think they were all Meursault, let alone all Perrières.

  • 2008 Yves Boyer-Martenot Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières Flawed

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

Aromas of clay, apple and hazelnut, followed by mineral. However, there was just the slightest hint of TCA- you could detect it while swirling the wine in the glass, but just ever so slightly. Balanced, with lemon butter, almond and mineral flavors. Long finish. Half an hour later, the TCA showed up on the palate as well.

    My #8, Domino's #8.

Aromas of almond, apple and beeswax/honeycomb. Good texture and weight on the palate. Apple and mineral flavors with a lovely wet stone/mineral quality on the finish. Well balanced with good underlying acidity.

  • 2008 Ballot-Millot & Fils Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

Aromas of citrus, apple and mineral with a terrific smoky/toasty overtone. Well-balanced, with apple, mineral and lemon oil flavors and a long finish. Develops a buttered popcorn note. Had to be nitpicky to rank 'em, and in doing so, this had a "sharp" edge on the finish that wines D and H did not have. Still a really lovely wine, and I had it pegged as a Corton Charlemagne. 93+ pts.

    My #3, Domino's #1.
    Group #2, 26 pts.

The first with a noticeable greenish tint. Apple, almond, clay and mineral aromas. Well-balanced, with great presence on the palate. Flavors of apple and honey with tons of minerality. With time, lemon oil and citrus qualities appear. Long, clean finish. 93-94 pts.

    My #2, Domino's #4.
