  • 2009 Kongsgaard Chardonnay The Judge 89 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Very tight nose on this, I noted some butter coming through with a little apple scent.
Hazelnut, lemon are apparent in the mouth. Clean on the palate, with decent acidity.
Just didn't have the depth or complexity I was looking for.

    SS 89pts.

  • 1966 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru

Disclaimer here: bottle had 8cm of ullage. Cork was quite moldy and broke on extraction.
No signs of past seepage. Decanted for sediment and returned to bottle for dinner.

Very dirty on the nose, heavy barnyard, caramel.
Nice velvety texture with detectable grip still on the palate.
Spice and faint red fruit which came out with longer air exposure.
A treat to try even though it may not have been in the best possible condition.

    SS 88pts.

    Absolutely delicious.

  • 1989 Château Cheval Blanc 91 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

    Ruby in color.

  • 1998 Château Cheval Blanc 92 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

    Nice dark color.

Herbal nose with salty plum and forest floor.
Silky texture on the palate with great potential.
Not everything is in place yet for this wine, may get better with a little more age.

    SS 92+pts.

  • 2002 Joseph Phelps Insignia 90 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

    Dark purple in color.

Big nose of baking spice (similar to the '01) plums, forest floor and a vegetal component.
Big fruit attack. Slightly hot finish.
I don't see this wine getting better or working out it's balance issue with age.

    SS 90pts.

  • 2005 Château Pavie 96 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Decanted for six hours prior to drinking at dinner.

The wine is dark as night.

    Day one

This wine is on lock down. Huge drying tannins, so overwhelming that it was hard to get at the underlying fruit. It's like being punched in the face repeatedly by two heavyweight boxers.

    Day two

Wine has vastly improved from last nights showing.

This has a massive nose of chocolate, sweet dark fruits like plums and a lovely cedar spice component. On the palate this wine has gobs of sweet dark fruit, bitter chocolate and some nice spice. Still has noticeable drying tannins, but starting to round out. This wine is delicious now but will only get better and better with more air time. This is a wine that I could see going 50+ years easily.

    Day three

Finally the tannins have completely smoothed out. Still has great fruit and structure. Gorgeous bottle of wine.

    SS 96+pts.

  • 2005 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Decanted for six hours prior to drinking at dinner.

    Day one

Not as dark as the '05 Pavie & '05 Clos Fourtet. Lovely nose of flowers, spice and plums. Palates similar to the nose with the addition of cedar and berries. Great velvety texture on the palate.

    Day two

The nose has opened up even more than last night. Baking spice jumps out of the glass along with dark berries, hints of cedar and tobacco. Big cola component on the palate along with dark berries, tobacco, cedar and coffee note. Silky smooth, great mid-palate. Long finish. Excellent wine.

    Day three

Hasn't lost its great nose. But the fruit and structure has faded a bit on the palate.

    SS 95pts.

  • 2005 Clos Fourtet 95 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Decanted for six hours prior to drinking at dinner.

    Day one

This wine is on lock down. Just like the '05 Pavie this had big drying tannins, so overwhelming that it was hard to get at the underlying fruit.

    Day two

Like the Pavie this wine has improved a lot with more air time.
This wine is almost black in color with a purple rim. Jammy dark fruit galore on the nose, along with spice and a black cherry cola thing going on. This is a sexy lush wine which echoes the nose in flavor profile. Still has drying tannins, but starting to smooth out. Great purity of fruit and texture on the mid-palate. Long finish. A wine that could in my opinion go 40 to 50+ years.

    Day three

Very fragrant on the nose, almost vintage port like. Just like the Pavie, the tannins are totally resolved. Smooth round velvety palate. Great length and purity of fruit still. A wow wine for sure.

    SS 95+pts.

  • 1945 Dow Porto Vintage 89 Points

    Portugal, Douro, Porto

Very alcoholic right off the bat on the nose. I got some caramel, and cherries on the nose.
I got this great cherry cough syrup component on the palate. The heat really ramps up on the finish.
    Overall a nice.

    SS 89pts.
