From magnum. Rich nose of pineapple, floral and pears. Intense and ripe fruit flavours, I would just like it to have more lift and purity. Very similar to a recent 750ml bottle and again I'd want to see it with some development.

Lime, with some honey and floral notes. It is evidently quite ripe like the Petaluma but I much prefer the balance with some cutting acidity and texture. Was drinking well now, but should age over 10 or more years.

Strongly floral nose, with some apple and pear. The palate starts off with ripe fruits but finishes with strong cleansing acidity. Liked this a little bit better than when I last tried it, but not up there with the best from 2012 for me so far.

Some spice, flint and apple on the nose. The palate isn't nearly as mineral driven, it is quite fleshy, with perhaps a tiny touch of residual sugar and ends up seeming a little bit soft to me. Needs more depth and lift.

Tangerine, peach and some spice aromas. Bright acid with crisp citrus fruit and minerality. Good persistence. Has immediate appeal but should shine with more time.

Honey, pear and toast with some kero notes which I really like. Showing plenty of development on the palate, it is just starting to broaden out slightly over the acidity and I think it will be best over the next few years. Still, it has good length and I thought it quite tasty now.

Some florals, chalk and light kero aromas. Good fruit depth and balance, it is very well structured and I think this needs some time, say 5-6 years to unwind and develop further.

Stewed apple with pineapple and lemon. Palate is thin, lacking depth and drive.

Spice and some floral aromas. Medium bodied palate with some more of that spice influence coming through. Drink now and over the shorter term.

Brown butter, toast, pear and lemon on the nose. Palate still has good freshness, though it is starting to take on some toasty, nutty characters with the acid just starting to soften slightly. Drink over the next 4-5 years.

Lemon, some spice and the beginning of toast and honey influence. Beautifully balanced on the palate with rich fruit that is just starting to develop and a lovely line of acidity. Should continue to progress over the next 3-4 years when I'd like to check in on it again.

Punchy floral notes on the nose, with green apple, lime and some grassy elements. The palate is powerful but has impressive precision and length. It's quite approachable and attractive now and it has all the components to age wonderfully.

Lots of honey and marmalade aromas, with a little bit of oxidization. Palate is decent to drink, it is fully developed though and likely a little way past its best as is it quite broad. I tried a bottle in 2005 and thought it was fully ready to drink at that point, so some bottles being in decline is probably natural.

Developed aromas of butterscotch, toast, some earth and mint. Palate has some decent acid remaining but the broadness is starting to overwhelm. Holding up better than the 1995 it was served next to, but drink now based on this bottle.

The nose is starting to show some aged characters with some nutty, lightly honeyed elements in addition to florals and lime. The palate however is still extremely youthful with mouthwatering acidity and good depth to the fruit. Great length and plenty of potential here.

Slate, lime and florals. Good line of acidity on the palate, with good length and a nicely crisp and dry finish. Needs some time but it seems to have the promise of quite a good wine in time.

Passionfruit, spice, lemon and white floral notes. Well structured and balanced, there is plenty of acidity but there is very good depth to the fruit as well. Give it more time and it should be cracking.

Out of the 03 and 05 tasted by its side, this showed a bit more development, with some light honey in addition to the citrus and floral aromas. The palate is just stating to soften around the edges but still has good length. Drink over the next 4-5 years.

Floral, graphite and light spice on the nose. Prominent acidity, it is very long and structured but really needs 5-6 years to emerge from this very tightly coiled phase.

Slate and lime with some toast. Palate is quite intense, with good length and acidity. Youthful and still needs time to show its best.

Musk, melon and some peach aromas. Searing acidity takes the focus away from the fruit. Needs 10+ years to soften and take on some complexity and I think it has the structure to reach that point.

Lime, peach and florals on the nose. Palate is softer than the searing 2006 and is more approachable, but the minerality and acidity is still present. More of a medium term prospect.

Served blind. Apple, aniseed, lychee and pear aromas. Quite broad initially on the palate though it finishes very dryly. Some interest texture here, though it is a quite an odd wine overall.

Vanilla, honey and some light spice. Dry on the palate, with medium fruit intensity and fairly shallow depth. Holding up fine at its age, though there is a bit of a resiny element to the finish which distracts.

Raisins and brown sugar with an oxidative element coming through with some force. The palate is just holding together, with the sugar giving it some flavour, though it falls away early. Always glad to try 81s, but this had seen better days.

Floral, with some herbs, pineapple and honey influence. Palate is quite sweet - around a ripe Spatlese level. There is decent depth of fruit, good balance and it should age quite well over the medium term.

Tasted next to the Bendigo from the same year, this was more steely and mineraly, with some musk, spice and lime as well. I found the fruit had better purity and the acidity give it good carry. More at a Kabinett style level of sweetness to the Bendigo's Spatlese.

Extremely sulphurous, some citrus after a while in the glass but hard to pick up much else. The palate is soft without much character. Not a good showing, some time in bottle will help it to settle but I don't know that the palate will be able to lift that much.

Intensely aromatic - wild florals and pear with citrus peel and some flint. The palate is nicely balanced between some delicious sweetness and fine acidity that gives some good drive to the wine. It isn't all sweetness as there is some good depth to the fruit. Very good.

Quite identifiably Alsace - ripe pear, spice and melon. The palate has a tiny touch of residual sugar, though it is minimal. Finishes nicely clean. There isn't much depth to it but it is appealing enough for what it is.

Floral nose with some peach and apple. At the lower level of the off-dry scale on the palate, it is well balanced with smooth edges and some good length. Pleasant to drink but I'm not sure how it will develop.

Floral and lime notes on the nose. Dry on the palate with well structured acidity. I like the balance but the fruit lacks a little intensity and depth. Consistent with a previous tasting.

I liked the nose, with lime, graphite and slate notes. The palate is dry with some rich fruit giving it some slight roundness. Good length and should continue to drink well over the next 4-5 years.

From magnum. Cloudy coloured. Stalky, strawberry, red cherry, and some pretty floral notes. Nice texture to the palate giving it some interest. Savoury with some good intensity to it. Has come together since a disjointed (750ml) bottle I had 6 years ago. Drink now based on this magnum.

Smoky, meaty, very light cherry and starting to seem a little bit tired on the nose. Palate was medium length but lacking in depth. Seemed to start falling away a bit even after a short time in the glass.

Quince and earth with some very light honey. Palate is a tad dull and really doesn't have much depth or complexity. It's okay to drink and it's not over the hill, but isn't really impressive.

440 half bottles made. From 375ml. Flint and minerality with citrus, florals and some botrytis influence. Very good finesse and vibrancy even though it has obvious intense sweetness on the palate. I'm impressed by the balance here in its youth, it should age well over the medium term as it has good structure.

210 half bottles bottles produced. From 375ml. I found the nose incredibly appealing - it is concentrated, bright and intense with pineapple, spice, citrus and some marmalade. The same can be said for the palate, it is really quite incredible with massive sweetness but countering and seamlessly integrated acidity. I found it to be not at all cloying, there is a purity and drive to the fruit that kept it from sticking. Really impressive wine that I think should age very well.

239 half bottles made. From 375ml. Powerful nose with quince, caramel, sultana and marmalade. The palate is almost overwhelming, with both the sweetness and acidity ramped up to 11. I do have a concern that the integration of the acid and sugar didn't quite seem right and that they were conflicting rather than working together. Hard to rate since it is so over the top on all levels, it was an experience to try it, but a tiny glass was more than enough.

Served blind, obvious Cabernet Sauvignon. Tomato leaf, ash, earth and tobacco aromas. Palate is stylish and really well balanced with the tannins almost fully resolved but still giving it some structure. Has complexity and depth to the remaining fruit. Excellent and drinking perfectly well now, a great way to finish the night!

Toast and citrus peel on the nose. Quite well balanced acid on the palate lends the wine a fresh lift, with decent length. Pretty easy to drink but has some interest to it as well. Drink over the next 5 years.
