Introduction

One of the great treasure troves amongst wine importers in Northern Europe, Vinopia has some rare and great american wines. Very generous to extend the invite to me. I did my best to stay professional and spit amongst all the sommeliers and restaurant purchase people, but there was so much great wine on offer and I had the day off from work and family obligations, so I had a hard time trying not to imbibe... great afternoon. Especially the cali cab and chard selections were first class!

Flight 1 - European wines (6 Notes)

Flight 2 - American whites (14 Notes)

  • 2012 Spring Mountain Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc

USA, California, Napa Valley, Spring Mountain District

good, well balanced, the freshness was there, but did not carry over to the finish which seemed somewhat tired (unclear how long the bottle had been opened).

  • 2013 Favia Sauvignon Blanc Linea

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Coombsville

Fantastic nose with grass, vanilla, grapefruit, honey dew melon, quite fat on the palate. a very special wine. Not easy to understand how the nose fit with the palate. A wine with a lot of personality!

Upon checking the favia website, it appears this is a six-year old dry farmed vineyard, and that there's a big share of what they call Sauvignon Musque (a more aromatic mutation) and a little bit of new oak but no malo.

  • 2013 Donkey and Goat Grenache Blanc

USA, California, Sierra Foothills, El Dorado

stonefruit, wool, meyer lemon, this is a fat wine with great balance, some oak. great complexity, perhaps the finish is not super long or perfect but I love it. Heard that they are discontinuing it. Why???! highly recommended if you can get it.

  • 2012 Scholium Project La Severità di Bruto Farina

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Mountain

There's lots of fruit there somewhere but this wine is way out there on the oxidized spectrum - and sharply acidic - to the point of herbal unripe lime bitterness. but fun!

  • 2013 Lioco Chardonnay La Marisma Vineyard

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

very elegant, fine palate and nose of meyer lemon, very expressive on the nose and sweet fruit underneath but still very fresh and food friendly. Highly recommended.

  • 2013 Ceritas Chardonnay Peter Martin Ray

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

Manages to combine elegance, crispy attack en bouche, some well managed oak dosage, ripe fruit, salinity and a rather long finish. It lingers in the air. These folks make some all time great Chardonnays. Strongly recommended!

  • 2013 Ceritas Chardonnay Pinnacle Vineyard

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

Lovely crispy zing from this one, something to fool your francophile wine loving friends in a blind test with, apple, lemon sorbet, long and elegant. Strongly recommended.

  • 2012 Scholium Project VLV Reserve Bokisch Ranches

    USA, California, Central Valley, Lodi

Great Verdelho from prof. Schoner. Fine nose, green, grassy, lovely freshness and purity. As sharp as a samurai sword's edge. Some spices on the back end, elegant. Highly recommended.

  • 2014 Jolie-Laide Trousseau Gris Fanucchi Wood Road Vineyard

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

sharply acidic, cool, fruity and elegant. Zesty and grippy. Love it! highly recommended.

  • 2013 Sandhi Wines Chardonnay Santa Barbara County

USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Barbara County

Better acidity than the big brother Sanford&Benedict; 2012 vintage that was tasted side by side. I guess its a youth or vintage thing. some mild spice and vanilla from the oak but just great in all aspects. Zesty and fine. highly recommended.

  • 2012 Sandhi Wines Chardonnay Sanford & Benedict Vineyard

USA, California, Central Coast, Sta. Rita Hills

Excellent pure and elegant chardonnay, did not have the same crispy zing as the Ceritas chards but very refined, light fruit, ephemeral. highly recommended.

  • 2013 Liquid Farm Chardonnay White Hill

USA, California, Central Coast, Sta. Rita Hills

One of the best chardonnays I tried on this generous tastings. A true citrus orgy! Spicy, fine, elegant, well balanced. Strongly recommended!

  • 2013 Liquid Farm Chardonnay La Hermana

USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Maria Valley

Very enticing nose of ripe Chardonnay fruit and buttered popcorn, more oaky and not as balanced as the White Hill. loosing weight and structure mid palate wise. still very nice though. As Qryan aptly described this is a little bit more of a crowd pleaser.

  • 2012 Stephen Ross Chardonnay

USA, California, Central Coast, Edna Valley

fine buttery chard. very good in its style, personally I can enjoy these more exuberant chards when they have such good balance, but the volume from the malo and oak is turned way up for now and if you believe that the acidity is there I'd say hold rather than drink.

Flight 3 - American reds (24 Notes)

These were tasted in different order than they appear here: pinots first and more tannic varieties later on.

Closing

and the winners are....

Ovid, Continuum, Togni, Tanbark were the best cabs. The Ovid you will enjoy now and for many years. The Togni and then the Continuum are for the cellar. The Tanbark offers the best value and immense pleasure right now and probably for another 5-10 years for sure.

Among the red Rhone varietals, Jolie Laide Rossi was a real stunner, and Reynvaan was exuberant. Tribute to grace was great as well but somewhat low on acidity.

Several great pinot noirs as well: George Ceremonial vineyard was a really pleasant new discovery, Ceritas and Lioco is always good and I like Paul Lato wines.

Chards: such a fantastic collection it is hard to choose! Ceritas is my favorite Cali chard producer together with Littorai. And Liquid Farm, Sandhi are just a half step behind, producing equally gorgeous and zesty Chardonnays. Lioco Sonoma County is the most price worthy cali chard I know of and I love to drink it every day. Today, the Peter Martin Ray Ceritas ,and the Liquid Farm white hill and the Ceritas pinnacle were showing fab.

Others: best value may have been the jura wines by JL Mouillard.
The scholium Verdelho was a pure joy to drink but maybe too pricey for what it offers? Still, I liked the Scholium wines quite a bit. Intellectual wines that stick in your mind for a long time.
Loved the Jolie Laide Trousseau Gris.
Donkey Goat Grenache Blanc was great!

If I were to limit myself to the top eight wines (no particular order between the eight):
Ovid
Togni
Liquid Farm White Hill
Ceritas Peter Martin Ray Chardonnay
Jolie Laide Rossi
Tanbark
Continuum
Reynvaan
