Introduction

I am lucky enough to have some great wine brothers that got together to celebrate with some very celebratory wines. Thank you Eric, Jesse, Ryan, Darren, Anthony and Joy!

Flight 1 (5 Notes)

Flight 3 (2 Notes)

  • 2012 Cayuse Wallah Wallah Special #4

USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Walla Walla Valley

    (2/17/2017)

Had this one day one of the weekend and followed over 6 days and it held so well. Still young and primary on day 1-2 but a normal cornucopia of complexities with the Cayuse saline mouthfeel, but pepper and peppercorns, dried flowers, iodine and kelp, juniper berries on day 1-2 but faded away, rocks and minerals, stemmy tannins that dissipated over time with plenty of smoke and ash.

  • 2010 Le Vieux Donjon Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    (2/17/2017)

Had this from magnum before getting to the aged rhones but circled back to it that night and night two. Young big and luscious but grounded in cdp roots. Lots of graphite, lush berry fruit, garrigue, fig cake, with some accents of smoke, kelp and iodine. It was nice to have this next to the 2001 and see the connection as I believe the winemaking style is still the same and will only improve with age.

Flight 4 (4 Notes)

  • 2001 Le Vieux Donjon Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    (2/17/2017)

Had double blind and nailed it but then talked myself out of it. Perfectly aged CDP and what I've come to expect from Le Vieux Donjon. Perfectly aged garrigue, iodine, kelp with a hint of pepper, pate, rolled stones, ash, muddled raspberry fruit, dry desert air, just on and on and oh so beautiful.

  • 2001 Henri Bonneau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve des Célestins

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    (2/17/2017)

Have wanted to try HB for quite a while and and it exceeded my expectations . It’s perfectly aged CDP at 16yrs in. The perfectly mature notes of garrigue, iron, kelp, figs, iodine, pepper, gamyness, pate and rolled stones paired perfectly with lamb stew. It was maybe the single best pairing with the lamb stew and wine I've ever had.

  • 2003 Château Rayas Châteauneuf-du-Pape Reserve Flawed

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    (2/17/2017)

    Corked...sigh

  • 2005 Château Rayas Châteauneuf-du-Pape Reserve

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    (2/17/2017)

The 3rd of the 3 wines in this flight of aged CDP's. All the high toned red fruits, incense, Italian plums and peppercorns but so much more mature and very much more of a traditional cdp and not as much in the house style. Delicious wines and amazing pairing with lamb stew.

Flight 5 (3 Notes)

  • 2002 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Landonne

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

    (2/17/2017)

The 1st of all three LaLa's started a bit angular but showed charcoal, lavender, garrigue, more fruit than I would have expected with wild blackberry, huckleberry and other dark but tart fruits that finished with great acids. Improved over 4days and pure syrah.

  • 2002 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Mouline

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

    (2/17/2017)

Had with all 3 Lala's, this was the most put together of the 3 on day one and probably throughout the 4days. Charcoal, pepper, garrigue, lavender, dark juicy berries with uplifting florals and great finishing acids.

  • 2002 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Turque

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

    (2/17/2017)

Had next to all 3 of the Lala's. Smoke, juicy dark berries, pepper, florals, lavender and garrigue much like the others with great finishing acids. A funkier of the 3 in a good way but the La Mouline showed the best of the three. Held similar over 4 days and Would be interested in seeing where this lesser vintage goes in 5-10more year.

Flight 6 (3 Notes)

  • NV Pol Roger Champagne Brut Réserve

    France, Champagne

    (2/18/2017)

Our starter on day two. My favorite house for champagne and also my favorite non vintage sparkler. Always luxurious with brioche, oyster shell, citrus, sea foam, weight on the palate but elegant with great acids and consistently delicious.

  • NV G.D. Vajra N.S. della Neve

    Italy, Piedmont, Vino da Tavola

    (2/18/2017)

An interesting wine from a region I wasn't familiar with making sparklers. Nice tart rhubarb and cranberry fruit followed by SCREAMING acids, citrus and a flintiness. The acidity almost created a chalkiness on the palate. Cleansed the palate with every sip.

  • 2014 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis 1er Cru Séchet

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

    (2/18/2017)

Flint and slight smoke, mineral bed, a hint of mint leaf, citrus for days, grass and mulch, a touch of honeysuckle. The full Dauvissat lineup are some of my favorite whites in the world and the Sechet separates itself with that hint of mint from the others.

Flight 8 (2 Notes)

  • 2010 Château de Saint Cosme Gigondas Valbelle

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Gigondas

    (2/18/2017)

One of two "blast from the past" wines my wine brothers blinded me on. I got it right but had a few clues. Everything I love about the southern Rhone with garrigue, loads of peppercorns, fig cake, muddle wild berries, rolled stones all on a balance frame. Wonderful wine.

  • 2008 Château Pavie

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

    (2/18/2017)

Wine 2 from the "blast from the past" blind of the night. I got this right too but talked myself out of it. Cedar box, graphite, pretty barrel notes, fresh tilled earth, horse lather and saddle leather with integrated tannins and good framing acids. Held very strong over 3dyas.

Flight 9 (2 Notes)

  • 2010 Casanova di Neri Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

    (2/18/2017)

One of the biggest suprises of tasting as I thought I would show super young but it was fully ready to go on that night and over 3days later it only got better. Tomato leaf, expansive dark fruits, rose peddles, dust and cedar box, just a pleasure to drink.

  • 2001 Feudi di San Gregorio Irpinia Serpico

    Italy, Campania, Irpinia

    (2/18/2017)

This wine was showing so well as almost all were over the weekend. A rusticity to this wine really intrigued me with cedar box, rust, tomato leaf, burley dark fruit in a good way with good tannin structure but acids to marry it with food. Don't think I'll wait too long to open my last bottle.

Flight 10 (1 Note)

  • 1978 Beringer Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve

    USA, California, Napa Valley

    (2/18/2017)

One of the many highlights of my 40th bday tasting. This is basically perfectly aged bdx blend. Mature but still lively fruits, fully integrated oak and tannins but still showing amazing structure and all the tertiary notes you would hope with aged wine. Mature dark fruits, lively acids, spice box, a touch of leather and barn, aged vanilla bean, maybe a lil smoke and so much finesse on the palate. Thank you so much Eric Sloane.

Closing

An epic two day tasting where every bottle showed extremely well and were perfect with Lamb stew, ratatouille, grilled NY strips, roasted brussel sprouts and plenty of charcuterie and cheese.
