40th Anniversary Magnum Party

Introduction

Our very generous friends, R & D, from the blind tasting groups, host an anniversary party on the 5s (30th, 35th, etc.). Married in 1977, this year they celebrated their 40th in epic fashion with another magnum party. They invited members of their three tasting groups over for a casual nonblind, walk around tasting. Heavy hors d'oeuvres, small sandwiches and plenty of desserts were served as well.

There were just over thirty tasters in attendance, yet everyone was very mindful of their pours. So much so that only two bottles were finished that evening: the Ruinart and d'Yquem. With so much wine and food left over, R&D had a few of us back the following day to finish up what remained. R turned up the music and we enjoyed another evening of good wine and fellowship.

Back to Saturday...Domino and I arrived early to help set up and prepare. Rich and I opened the mags in the cellar, where the wines sat until it was time for guests to arrive. We brought up the wines in groups, and only brought up the next group of wines once most of the guests had made their way through the prior set. Wines are listed in the order I tasted them on Saturday night. The bottles that went unfinished were returned to the cellar overnight and then on Sunday we followed the same format, bringing them up in groups. It was fun seeing how these developed overnight.

Tannins are integrating nicely on the palate, which is dominated by red fruit flavors. Herb notes with a slight cigar tobacco flavor in the finish. Balanced, with a long finish. My favorite of the big-time Bordeaux on the table as it was clearly, for myself and a few others, the most accessible.
