2021 Bordeaux Tasting Trip

Introduction

THIS IS IN PROCESS

A few items to note:

The goals of the trip
1. Better understand the 2018-2020 vintages as the information to date is all over the place.
2. Wanted to get a better understanding of the 2021 vintage
3. Become better educated/familiar with Chateaus I have heavily purchased but have limited experience with personally
4. Understand the massive shift with many Chateau winemaking styles

2020 is a magical vintage and IMO has been downplayed by critics because they could not taste in person with a host of differences impacting their tastings/bias However it is not a Homogeneous vintage (not that many are) due to the critics:
(1) Not tasting blind as in previous years, so personal bias is included in their assessment
(2) the samples spent a different amount of time exposed to oxygen, time in glass, etc
(3) they were not with the same tasting group as in other tastings (by themselves or with multiple staff that may not be the group they will be with EP)
(4) Poor or inconsistent samples from Bordeaux
(5) Timing of tastings and/or tastings with different wine groupings
(6) The perceived need to dramatically change the wines profile with the current in vogue trend of anti-Parker (more on this later) and some critics blind torch carrying objective

2018, from what I can tell is not this super fruity jammy non-descriptive wine that many critics have led us to believe. Not homogeneous but the good ones are Fantastic!

Wines are being made to be consumed now and later vs just later. They still have great structure but can be approached early in many instances.

Zero read on 2019. Mixed messages all over the place but VCC was magnificent (more on VCC later).

2021 has a lot more issues than frost/hail damage mainly due to significant persistent rain very late in the season combined with cool to cold weather even in late July. Now combo that with rising temperatures, mildew is playing a large role in many Chateaus… even when not infected, Chateaus had to already spray 17-18 times in the more biodynamic vineyards just to stay stable.

2020 EP from many of the Chateaus was a greater success than they imagined (can’t speak to all rather more around the chateaus I had an opportunity to speak with) to the point in the middle tier having to sell more than they originally wanted due to repeated requests from Negociants (the supply in theory may still be sitting with Negociants but when I went back to order considerably more (and agreed to take anything) many were sold out completely).

Attendees on the trip to help understand group or comment perspectives:
1 novice Bordeaux wine drinker that is an intermediate in Napa/Sonoma but has been exposed to exceptional wines from Bordeaux
2 intermediate wine drinkers, both of them on their way down the slippery slope and this trip didn’t help
1 40 year Somm
1 Me for whatever that’s worth

Wine of the trip: Vieux Chateau Certan

The number one wine changed hands multiple times throughout and was held by the 2005 Latour the longest (except the novice wine drinker) until Vieux Chateau Certan (notice how I didn’t put a vintage on there?). We marveled at Latour (and later 2020 Le Pin) to the point of giggles, nods and satisfaction that this is a wine of a lifetime (not to mean it’s the best wine I have ever had but is certainly in that group of bests)...

Flight 1 - Leoville Poyferre (5 Notes)

  • 2000 Château Léoville Poyferré 89 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

    (7/12/2021)

A tasting in Bordeaux of 71 wines, some of the best I have ever had and others, umm, well were disappointing. If you read the Tasting story (and my grading history) I think it will do a much better job putting this in perspective.

This was tasted at the chateau immediately upon arriving in Bordeaux after a long day of travel. Our host at the Chateau was very gracious and accommodating with my agenda. As with many wines from this trip, I was previously unfamiliar with the chateau but thanks to JG, I added this to the itinerary and it didn't disappoint.

Some notes of value, at least to me anyway, we tasted 2000, 2003, 2010, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2020 are as follows:
    a) quality greatly improved in the most recent vintages
    b) added quality improvement equipment and processes
    c) the style is on the more opulent side but not over the top or jammy

The 2000 was enjoyable to taste but I left feeling they could have made a better wine and was concerned the chateau was not a wine I wanted for my cellar (which I love finding those as it saves me money). This trend continued until 2015 vintage...

Wine came off a little tired and the overall complexity for a 2000 did not pull through as I would have hoped. This was previously opened which may have a played a role but this was a consistent impression until after the grape sorting equipment and processes were improved.

The 2010 was the first step up, for me anyway- but it might have been the vintage better aligning with my palate. Good structure and a solid wine which during the tasting was a noticeable step up for my palate. Was starting to get the sense better things to come.

The 2016 was on an entirely different level. We first tasted an already open bottle from the previous day and a brand new bottle. This wine was a knockout! Great wine with complexity, great structure and really well built from start to finish. I would drink this now and later but suggest if drinking now, get some airtime in there, even an hour and you will be able to enjoy a great wine in the primary but wonderful stage. Cant wait to drink this again!

Flight 2 - Ducru Beaucaillou (3 Notes)

  • 2017 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

    (7/13/2021)

A tasting in Bordeaux of 71 wines, some of the best I have ever had and others, umm, well were disappointing. If you read the Tasting story (and my grading history) I think it will do a much better job putting this in perspective.

Let me start off by saying I absolutely love the 2016 Grand Vin, thank you MC, so much so that I bought two more times to make sure I had enough in the cellar for future drinking. So I was very excited to taste other great vintages while at the estate, which on a side note, is one of the most beautiful Chateaus plus has eclectic art to keep you on your toes (pretty cool from the insanely large gemstone to the NYC style spray paint tagged on the door, etc. - Really cool.

Anyway three wines were opened, none with the requisite time to bring these wines to their full potential:

    Ducru Beaucaillou 2017
    Lalande Borie 2017
    La Croix Beaucaillou 2017

The grand vin disappointed as the elements I loved in this wine were not present at the tome of the showing. The wine felt more closed but also lacking in full complexity and richness that is balanced with acidity to keep it all together. This version on this day missed the mark. Hopefully it’s not a style change that backfired for this terrior and was more of a vintage change.

This wine was a disappointment as I had better hopes for a second wine coming from such a strong pedigree. Is it the vintage or the style of the wine, I do not have enough experience to know but I would not buy this vintage unless I am able to taste other vintages in various lifecycles. Perhaps a long decant would have been a benefit but it would not have fixed the current short comings very noticeable without age.

What a beautiful second wine, and frankly a great wine in its own right. This vintage for this wine is excellent. It so so damn compelling and a glimpse into one of the wines of the vintage, the Grand Vin, Lalande Comtesse.

This wine has all the goods, and I was so floored by it, I bought another case before even getting back. Great wine and QPR in 2020.

The 2020 Pichon Lalande Comtesse is a wine of the vintage and one that drastically closes the gap between its first growth neighbors. Wow this vintage and starting with the ‘18 vintage puts the other Chateaus on notice. This wine is the complete package from the depth of the flavors to the kaleidoscope of complexity and the wonderful three phases. What a wonderful wine and one that I can’t wait to experience through the years. Can be drank young and is pretty amazing now, yes really, and will benefit from age.

I have never been a big fan of Lalande Comtesse, have tasted a number (and own a fair amount) of the better vintages but they never wow’d me and quite frankly the Pichon Baron 2010 is a standout (for my palate anyway) between the two. Originally I only purchased a handful but the ‘18 & ‘20 tasting this week completely changed my perspective as this wine is spectacular.

Wonderful experience at Lafite with a 2006 Gran Vin and a 2009 Carruades de Lafite.

This was for sure a visit I was looking forward to but unfortunately the 2006 vintage is not in my wheelhouse but I did 100% appreciate the experience. For me, this is a food wine as it’s already deep into the tertiary territory with some fruit, leather, earth, mushroom, etc. with well integrated tannins and acidity- a beautiful wine but not my preferred style, vintage, character.

This was for sure a visit I was looking forward to and the 2009 Carruades is a beautiful representation of the 2009 vintage with the beginning of the secondary flavors beginning to shine through. Lots of wonderful life left in the beautiful wine, very enjoyable!

Flight 5 - Chateau Latour (3 Notes)

A tasting in Bordeaux of 71 wines, some of the best I have ever had and others, umm, well were disappointing. If you read the Tasting story (and my grading history) I think it will do a much better job putting this in perspective.

Hmm after an amazing tour and a nervous anticipation of what this holy grail of Bordeaux would allow me to taste, I was floored by the wines in front of me. I very much wanted to taste the lineup and was hoping, and assuming no, it would be in my favorite vintages and the Chateau graciously over delivered by allowing me to taste the
    2016 Pauillac de Latour
    2015 Forts de Latour
2005 Chateau Latour (this one I still cannot believe)

The Pauillac, for my palate, and it could be the lack of air or age, was less compelling than I would have hoped. Oh well the others, while certainly at another price point, were on another level.

I have to admit, after trying the 2014 Forts previously I came in with perhaps unfair expectations as I thought the 2015 would be killer and over shoot its ‘14 brother. While maybe that was unfair, it played a role in my initial reaction but not the overall impression. The wine is very good solid wine and one that doesn’t disappoint however this wine should not be drank young and needs time to round out and soften the tannins. In time the wine should blossom and really come together nicely. I would recommend a min 10 years from vintage.

I get to taste the 2005 Latour at Latour expertly stored and prepared after a day of insane Chateaus, what a treat and wow did it over deliver. This wine was killer juice and technically held the number one spot the longest which none of us thought it could be dethroned. It was a wine with everything and anything you would want in such a masterpiece full depth and complexity while still young for uts age while delivering the goods on the secondary flavors ending in a finish that was well over a minute and a half. Wine is absolutely fantastic and may have surpassed my favorite left bank Chateau. Wow this wine was fantastic over delivering in every phase for a wine of this age. I would hold for another few years as this has the goods for the long haul but if you were smart and financially well off enough to buy in large quantities, no harm in drinking one now. What a wine.

Flight 7 - Vignobles K Grou (3 Notes)

  • 2018 Enclos Tourmaline 94 Points

A tasting in Bordeaux of 71 wines, some of the best I have ever had and others, umm, well were disappointing. If you read the Tasting story (and my grading history) I think it will do a much better job putting this in perspective.

I started buying these wines in ‘19 but haven’t had the opportunity to taste until now. With the rest of the Vinobles K portfolio, Enclos is no exception, as they are moving towards more lift and freshness yet not, at least for the ‘18, discounting the voluptuousness the property offers.

The ‘18, PnP and opened in the glass, hits all the buttons for a beautiful complex palate wrapped around velvety lush tannins one would expect from the best chateaus in Pomerol. The wine is a beauty and will only get better with time in the bottle. Beautiful Pomerol- I hope the ‘19 & ‘20 are this good. Excellent! 94+

Was able to taste the 2020 alongside the 2017 at the chateau and it was an interesting comparison as I really love this well made more affordable wine. TSC is one of the chateaus/wines that I referred to as slowly changing their style with a focus away from Parker and focused more on the energy than the opulence- while this is not always my preferred style, they unlike a couple other Chateaus, recognize the importance Parker played and move within their space to modify vs a complete 180 where they are no longer working within their terroir if that makes sense. Good wine at a very good value.

Didn't decant the wine but will be very interested how it develops in the cellar for a few years.

This was tasted at the chateau with the 2018. First and foremost I cannot thank Lea enough for her time, honesty transparency and passion she shared with us throughout. I am a big fan of MSE now that I know a lot more in-depth about the wine - and it was the best 2011 I have ever had and honestly the only one I would look forward to drinking and would buy.

The other 2011s tasted on this trip paled greatly in comparison. This wine had it all, and I would never have guessed 2011 Margaux or 2011 in general.

It is in a perfect window for my palate with plenty of fruit and secondary flavors that just started the beginning notes of tertiary flavors with velvety tannins. Great wine right now with minimal decant (quick decant or let it open in the glass).

This was tasted at the chateau with the 2011. First and foremost I cannot thank Lea enough for her time, honesty transparency and passion she shared with us throughout. I am a big fan of MSE now that I know a lot more in-depth about the wine based on a great 2011 and this really well done 2018, I am an auto buyer going forward. Further, this drinks above its price point.

While the wine is not yet in its prime drinking window, there is no question this is a great wine and while should be cellared, is already drinking wonderfully. Great complexity and depth for a future standout wine- I am buying more later this week. Very very good and look forward to drinking again sooner rathe than later.

Flight 9 - Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte (4 Notes)

  • 2015 Château Smith Haut Lafitte 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

    (7/14/2021)

A tasting in Bordeaux of 71 wines, some of the best I have ever had and others, umm, well were disappointing. If you read the Tasting story (and my grading history) I think it will do a much better job putting this in perspective.

Smith Haut Lafitte is such a beautiful property with a gorgeous hotel, spa and multiple restaurants... they even have their own barrel maker onsite. A great way to end the day with the wife at the Spa, me tasting throughout the day and we meet back up for a tasting and then a fabulous dinner, hard to beat.

    We tasted:
    2011, 2015 & 2018 Smith Haut Lafitte
    2017 Smith Haut Lafite Blanc

The 2015 is a great wine but needs a few more years of nappy time to round out the structure a bit more to really fulfill it potential. It has all of the structure and stuffing to blossom into a real beauty but it simply has not had enough time in the cellar to fully evolve. Don't touch until 2024. 93++

The 2017 blanc needs time in the cellar to fatten up a bit and allow the structure to easy a bit, for my palate any way. For those looking more for a leaner sharper wine, have at it now. Possible upside in a couple of years.

The 2018 is not a great wine- yet. It seems there might be a change in style, with a focus like many of the other Chateaus on more lift/energy/structure... Like my 2018 Troplong Mondot note, I am not sure how this will change a wine I have really grown to love and how successful it will be but unlike Troplong, it is not an abrupt change rather just a stronger focus. While I am not as sold on the change at least for this vintage as I was on Tour St Christophe I am also not as concerned as I was with Troplong Mondot, at this stage anyway. Time will of course be the only true test and answer and I am willing to continue the ride with SHL until then.

What an amazing chateau, property manager and team. Not sure if there is a team as experienced as the team at L’Evangile. Great experience in Asia, Southern Hemisphere, etc. Tasted both the 2008 & 2012 which while not my vintage of choice proved how great of a property this is.

The 2012 is well, 2012- that was my impression. Then I reached back for the 2008 which was noticeably better but both wines were drinking at what I assume is the start of their individual drinking windows; 2008 in the middle and 2012 at the beginning. Drinking window in general for this property is 10-15 years and best years 10-30 years.

Flight 11 - Vieux Chateau Certan (4 Notes)

  • 2020 Vieux Château Certan La Gravette de Certan 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

    (7/15/2021)

A tasting in Bordeaux of 71 wines, some of the best I have ever had and others, umm, well were disappointing. If you read the Tasting story (and my grading history) I think it will do a much better job putting this in perspective.

Let me get the VCC tasting lineup out of the way as there is no question this is one of, if not the top estate in Bordeaux, period. Link the above comment to my VCC tasting note and overall Story once I find the time to post it.

    Tasted:
2020 La Gravette de Certan barrel sample
2020 Vieux Chateau Certan barrel sample
2019 Vieux Chateau Certan half bottle
    2010 Vieux Chateau Certan bottle

I have had a handful of different vintages of La Gravette, ‘15 & ‘16, and they are good wines and worth the price of entry but the 2020 is at an entirely different level (perhaps so is ‘18 & ‘19 but I did not taste) to the point it could stand on its own a fetch 50% or more than the previous price point and I wouldn’t bat an eye. The wine is deep, sensual and utterly delicious built around great structure with a beautiful finish. The 2020 to my knowledge has not been released yet but if it stays at the same price point as previous vintages this is a heavy purchase for me, it’s just that good.

  • 2019 Vieux Château Certan 97 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

A tasting in Bordeaux of 71 wines, some of the best I have ever had and others, umm, well were disappointing. If you read the Tasting story (and my grading history) I think it will do a much better job putting this in perspective.

Vieux Chateau Certan is not a Trophy wine that Americans buy to throw their junk on a table and show off (crude I know but reality), it’s a wine that really only knowledgeable wine drinkers are aware of and not well known to Americans. Further they do not advertise or market or do any publicly at all, they are farmers/winemakers and that’s what they know (FYI going forward same winemaker as Le Pin GT). If there was an ounce of marketing they would be priced 2x++ what it is today. First we tasted the 2020 second wine, La Gravette de Certan, then 2020 VCC, then 2010 and then the 2019 (requested a comparison after the fact). The suite of wines were outstanding, period- and they know it with a shy smile and a nod.

After having the incredible 2020 and the impeccable 2010 and seeing us squeal like schoolchildren and nearly faint following screams of ecstasy, I was curious how the so far unknown ‘19s were in comparison to these wines and he said “let’s find out”. I think we all started clapping like Eddie Murphy in the Krumps. In the back of my head I was ready to be disappointed as these two wines we just had were some of the best wines we have ever had and the 2010 just dethroned the 2005 Latour. Well the wine didn’t disappoint in the least. Nearly as good as the 2020, it simply crushed it. Damn these wines are unreal and the 2020 increase was well deserved. Damnit.

If you have never heard of VCC, you will soon enough. If you haven’t tasted one, you are missing out on what wine is all about. If you haven’t had one in its peak drinking window, regardless if early or towards the end, I don’t think one truly has experienced all of what wine has to offer (while it may not be affordable, either save up and stop buying other wine or find a friend or pool some friends together and chip in to buy one- and if doing that, buy the 2010 as it’s firing on all cylinders and will only continue to get better every day- IMO (I purposefully left out humble). Cheers!

While the 2020 had the large price increase (like others) it made other much more expensive wines look like they were playing in little league baseball while VCC just won the championship. While I am not familiar with Petrus or Screaming Eagle (only familiar with the second wine) nor truly understand Burgundy, I can say without a doubt VCC was the wine of the trip and the best wine at the price- and one of the best wines we have ever had.

Holy mother of gd this is insane and can’t be for real. Nectar of the gds right here and now. As the thief started to pour the wine into our glasses, the bouquet slaps you playfully with incredible intensity and incomparable never ending perfume of flavor after flavor that never seems to end… we all snap our heads in attention and our mouth waters, as what it must be like for a crack addict, a burning desire to rip the glass from its location and ingest this magical elixir immediately while staying cool calm collected on the outside… Well that was what I intended anyway…

Once in the mouth, there is an explosion of flavors that hit you from all directions with the finesse of a professional ice skater and the artistry of Picasso/Monet/[fill in your artist of choice here] where you stare at the artwork and marvel at its vision and unspoken message. It has an incredible complexity providing a kaleidoscope of flavors that will be hard to be matched anywhere at any price, enhanced by the most incredible mouthfeel, which can only be described as silk velvet wrapped in full structure coating the mouth creating nearly a 90 second finish- yes really. Without an ability to even come close to expressing how fing good this is, I almost didn’t try as anything I wrote would not even come close… do you think I liked the wine? Nope absolutely in love with it.

If you have never heard of VCC, you will soon enough. If you haven’t tasted one, you are missing out on what wine is all about. DAJ in the below tasting note put it best and I should leave well enough alone but that’s just plain silly, like a sign over the big red button that reads don’t press so here I go…

Vieux Chateau Certan is not a Trophy wine that Americans buy to throw their junk on a table and show off (crude I know but reality), it’s a wine that really only knowledgeable wine drinkers are aware of and not well known to Americans. The 2010 stole the show, still very young, but is one of my top wines I have ever had and it will only get better from here. I had the 2000 (too young and didn’t decant with MP) and two 2009s this year and while the 2000 was just ok, the 2009 was very very good (first one in Maui want decanter long enough), the 2010 is out of this world and at entirely different level … and 2020 might even surpass 2010… although might be hard to do.

The wine is near perfection, a chorus, better yet a symphony from the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra. I won’t use flowery fluffy words to try and fail this wine, it just wouldn’t be right. It’s an amazing wine experience that is incredible now and will continue to involve and add complexity for decades. Wow.

If you have never heard of VCC, you will soon enough. If you haven’t tasted one, you are missing out on what wine is all about. Flight 12 - Chateau Le Pin (1 Note)

A tasting in Bordeaux of 71 wines, some of the best I have ever had and others, umm, well were disappointing. If you read the Tasting story (and my grading history) I think it will do a much better job putting this in perspective.

I am not exactly sure what to write here. There are very few wines that leave you speechless, and this is one of those wines. I was speechless for three reasons, one I have never had a recent vintage of any wine at this price point so the appreciation and recognition of what I was about to experience was felt in spades, two its a rareity living in the US, that I was about to taste a barrel sample at the Chateau/winery (not exactly a Chateau) of arguably the top wine in Bordeaux in an excellent vintage and three, I went in thinking what idiot would spend this amount of money on a wine as there is no chance it is even that great of a wine so just enjoy the experience... and boy was I sadly mistaken as this wine is pure utter enjoyment and near perfection (no wonder it is the king of all wines and tops Petrus time and time again). The wine is harder to describe than most as its the utter complexity and near perfect balance that dazzles the senses. The best way to describe it for those that have never had a chance at tasting this wine is- its is like looking at a pure athlete in any sport. The ability to flawlessly execute the golf or tennis shot, place the ball in the one spot a hitter cant get it or only the receiver can touch it 50 yards down the field surrounded by 4 capable defensive backs is all I can come up with- and you hit replay over and over again asking yourself how the F did he/she do that. That is this wine.

Ok so what does all that fluffy stuff mean when it comes down to how it fared on the trip. I will do a better job in the story section when I get there but this wine was tied for the best wine at parts of our trip and holds the second spot with 2005 Latour... and honestly I am even more excited to try this wine again. Wow just beautiful. 98+

Tasting at the brand new gorgeous Chateau that will begin the wine making process for the 2021 vintage. This is another chateau hoping to move up in class this next voting period (2022) which they very well may achieve. I have never tasted Figeac but began buying the 2015 vintage due to the pedigree, rumored quality and style changes and my initial planned visit in ‘18 that eventually changed due to the start of their massive renovations.

I was excited to taste based on my inventory and never having the opportunity. While I wanted to taste a newer vintage to learn more about current state, it was interesting to taste a 2009 gran Vin alongside a petit Figeac 2016.

The tasting started with the 2009 and to be honest was very disappointed. The wine lacked the quality and depth I was expecting this gran Vin to deliver. The ‘16 petit offered more in the way of what I would have expected from a chateau of this reputation. Will hold off my assessment of the chateau until I get a better sense of the more recent vintages.

This was tasted at the chateau with Jeremy during an impromptu stop by- and he was so accommodating and gracious, hoping off the tracker and hunting for a bottle to open. I started buying in 2018 but never had the chance to taste the wine until now.

As with MSE I am now a fan of Feytit Clinet now that I know a lot more in-depth about the chateau and based on a great 2015 I am an auto buyer going forward. Further, this drinks above its price point and he communicated his most recent vintages built on each other to the point of the latest trilogy being his best to date. Pretty impressive as the 2015 was excellent and a great price point.

Medium to full bodied, with great depth and structure for early drinking but will benefit with another couple of years in the cellar. What a great Pomerol and unknown so far. 2020 he sold more than he wanted to the point the Negociants kept coming back requesting more- a good problem to have but very little inventory held back for future. Great stuff and a solid auto buy for me. 93+

Tasting at the brand new gorgeous Chateau that will begin the wine making process for the 2021 vintage. Troplong is/has been a true standout for me on the right bank delivering a richness and complexity that perfectly fits the terrior and winemaking style.

Two call outs, beginning in 2018, they hired a new wine consultant (same as Canon) to change the wine style and have recently invested heavily in the property in hopes (IMO) in being elevated in this year’s (decision due in 2022) classification. More on my opinion on the 2018 and/or tasting story.

    Wines tasted at the Chateau
    2006 Troplong Mondot
    2011 Troplong Mondot
    2018 Troplong Mondot
    2017 Mondot

The 2006 is a nice wine with the expected round mature profile from this Chateau in this vintage. While the wine is not my preferred vintage and drinking window, it is the right spot if this is your preference. A nice mature wine drinking well.

The 2011 is not the typical Troplong Mondot profile mainly due to the vintage impact- they did what they could with what was presented to them under their previous experience. This is not my style and much preferred the 2006 TM in this lineup or as a comparison of the vintage the 2011 MSE had earlier.

Unfortunately only having one experience with the second wine, I can only speak to this one tasting experience which was simply not in my wheelhouse- is it due to the vintage or winemaking, I cannot say. I am open to tasting another vintage and seeing where that takes me but will pass of the 2017 second wine.

A tasting in Bordeaux of 71 wines, some of the best I have ever had and others, umm, well were disappointing. If you read the Tasting story (and my grading history) I think it will do a much better job putting this in perspective.

    2006 Troplong Mondot
    2011 Troplong Mondot
    2018 Troplong Mondot
    2017 Mondot

Ok so this may be controversial but… I don’t care. I love Troplong Mondot anyone can look back at my notes on the early drinking of the 2015. The style perfectly matches the terrior and whether or not the style matches your palate preference, you can see how it has appeal for those that do. Well, the stylistic change IMO for this vintage in particular is an abrupt 180 and at this stage I am unable to grasp why it wasn’t a more gradual change by working within the terrior and what the vintage presented vs what may be a hasty change for the sake of change which is what this feels like to me at this point in time. It doesn’t mean with nap time it won’t become the wine they want it to become it’s simply not what I would have expected or preferred for this vintage.

Now I didn’t have it decanter for hours nor did I taste the ‘19 or ‘20 so color me a skeptic for now but hopeful the abrupt Parker 180 doesn’t jeopardize what this chateau can produce within their terrior. Only time will tell. Based on this tasting hold for 10 years from vintage date and try again.

  • 2015 Château Calon-Ségur 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

    (7/16/2021)

A tasting in Bordeaux of 71 wines, some of the best I have ever had and others, umm, well were disappointing. If you read the Tasting story (and my grading history) I think it will do a much better job putting this in perspective.

I was very much looking forward to my St Estephe tastings. While unfair to discount St Estephe based on Cos and Calon Segur tastings, it has certainly made it take a back seat and won’t search it out until I get to taste a great vintage from one of the estates, from my inventory or elsewhere (finally I saved money by not having to double up previous orders after the fact).

    Tasted at the chateau:
    2015 Chateau Capbern
2015 Le Marquis de Calon Segur
    2015 Calon Segur

The wine was just ok? We had an incredible chateau representative but the wines did not show as I would have hoped and especially for a 2015. Now did St Estephe struggle in 2015 unlike everywhere else in Bordeaux or should these wines have been opened the day before or do I simply not prefer St Estephe (I doubt that to be the case but a fair question)- I am unable to get a read as I don't have the experience with these to provide an educated read or guess so as I did with Cos, I will not buy more (yay saving money) and will not search these out as I had planned but I will not write off the chateau or St Estephe until I have a great representation to accurately consider.

This wine is not for me as it is too linear with not enough stuffing even at this price point.

Not familiar with the wine or St Estephe but perhaps it needs time but as of now it is under delivering even for a wine in this price range.

I was very much looking forward to my St Estephe tastings, with super high expectations for Cos. While unfair to discount St Estephe based on Cos and Calon Segur tastings, it has certainly made it take a back seat and won’t search it out until I get to taste a great vintage from one of the estates, from my inventory or elsewhere (finally I saved money by not having to double up previous orders after the fact).

    Tasted at the chateau
    2011 Cos gran vin
    2008 Cos gran vin
    2011 pagados
    2017 Cos Blanc

I wish they were willing to open other vintages as I left more confused than before I arrived. If it wasn’t for the 2010 Pagados had a couple of years earlier, I would have written this Chateau off completely regardless of its pedigree as the wines I tasted this trip, vintages and top performers literally crushed this wine.

I will withhold final judgment until I taste a better vintage.
