Flight 1 (18 Notes)

  • 2010 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche 96 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru

Vibrant red and black cherry. Surprisingly open and approachable. Gorgeous stems very evident. Palate is striking up front but already has soft and easy edges. Already spectacular and hard not to love right now. I have a serious bias for older wines, but this is quite obviously one of the best in the lineup tonight. I prefer this to the ’09 and ’05, which is comparable, but a degree restrained, relatively. Each of the wines in this flight have terrific staying power and long flavourful finish.

  • 2009 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru

Comparable to the ’10 alongside but perhaps a little less striking, but this is splitting hairs. Beautiful floral stems. Palate is vibrant and primary and again maybe slightly less powerful than the ’10. This too is surprisingly open and accessible right now and has great power with soft and easy edges. I think I may prefer this to the ’05 right now, only because this is more open for business at the moment. Each of the wines in this flight have terrific staying power and long flavourful finish.

  • 2005 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru

On the nose both 2010 and 2009 are more expressive, although this still has beautiful bright red fruit. Actually showing a little bit of development. This excels on the palate with big, complete structure, powerful. Less ready than ’09 or ’10 in the same flight but is every bit as powerful and is technically stronger than ’09 but maybe not ’10. Each of the wines in this flight have terrific staying power and long flavourful finish.

  • 2002 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche 96 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru

Gorgeous, floral, bready, open for business, incredibly elegant, wood integration already in a great spot. Floral, expressive, nose here is a departure from the ’10, ’09, ’05 flight and is in full La Tâche peacock mode. Racy, flashy, sexy, wonderful. Palate is complete and integrated and still has plenty of power. I love ’01 and ’00 but this easily takes the flight. Terrific.

  • 2001 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru

Beautiful, elegant, approachable, pure, showy. Bright, lighter than ’02 but still energetic and racy. Palate is sensational as well with driving length and precision. Energetic, great length. Excellent flight.

  • 2000 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru

Similar to the ’02 in terms of the exoticism and spice, maybe a little less wild than ’01 or ’02, still very showy with huge projection and highly expressive. Palate is also brilliant. Every bit as special and enjoyable as ’01 or ’02 right now and perhaps the most integrated and open for business. Energetic, great length. Excellent flight.

  • 1999 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche 97 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru

Powerful, intense, robust, seriously massive wine. Black cherry. So young, almost frustratingly so. Obviously monumental, but right now ’00 to ’10 drink better in my unpopular opinion. Powerful and stuffed palate, a little bruising now. Excellent, no doubt about it, just massive and maybe masking the finesse and elegance that was so beautifully on display in the ’00, ’01, ’02 flight. Lush and rich. Wait to open these. technical 97-98, drinking now ~95 to my taste.

  • 1998 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru

Still floral and pretty but showing more development and a touch pruney. This may have been good value a few years ago but this now has darker and slightly awkward fruit. All of the bottles in this program are from the same outstanding cellar, and given this showing I’d probably skip the ’98 going forward. 93 - 94.

  • 1997 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru

Nose here isn’t terribly showy. Candied red cherry. A little too much modern polish that doesn’t quite fit. Nose is odd but the palate is actually pure and clean and a little more in line with what we’ve seen so far. Smoke and oak. I don’t think I’d call this DRC blind. The group hated this.

  • 1996 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru

Nose is highly expressive, showy, exotic, floral. Loads of black cherry. The best of a difficult flight and steamrolling the ’95 alongside which was the closest although not a great example. I liked this more than most tonight, in isolation probably much better, but not stellar in the context of this massive vertical. 93 - 94.

  • 1995 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru

Candied red berry and a little like then ’97 in terms of awkward fruit and integration. ’96 superior. Palate is better with striking black cherry. Short of austere but a little too closed and tight. Changing. Up and down, not a great showing, in isolation probably much better, but not stellar in the context of this massive vertical. 93+

  • 1993 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru

Nose is a little medicinal and herbal. Black fruit, some stems. I don’t mind this, like it even, but it is clearly not on par with any of the other vintages in the program, including the challenging ’95, ’96, ’97 flight. Eucalyptus and greenness. Off and on. Controversial. Try it, wouldn’t buy one.

  • 1992 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru

Nose is surprisingly classic. Showy, expressive, open for business. Smells far more proper than ’93. Palate is soft and easy going. Sort of a nice surprise. Still elegant and pretty. Fun to try.

  • 1991 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche 98 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru

Detailed, complex, highly expressive bouquet. Floral and stemmy and gorgeous. This is a pristine bottle, a very youthful example, and I believe this is holding back whereas the outstanding ’90 in the next glass is a little more forward. Palate is superb. Absolute masterpiece. Sweet red cherry, pure, balanced, harmonious. Long flavourful finish, great staying power. Neck and neck with the ’90 and could be the wine of the flight and the wine of the vertical. Maybe a hair more refined than the ’90, but also a degree less wild and showy.

  • 1990 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche 98 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru

Bright red cherry, very pure and clean. Stunningly youthful but still very soulful. This wine require proper age to really show up, I still think there may be room to run. Palate is about perfect and is seemingly just approachable now. This bottle is showing the Asian five spice and hoisin associated with Romanée-Conti. Clove. Detailed, complex, full peacock showing. Flashy and expressive. The ’90 has a flicker of sauvage and something wild that the ’91 does not. I think this wine is still trending upwards actually. Neck and neck with the ’91, probably up to personal preference. This probably has a degree more projection and expression. Probably the wine of the vertical.

  • 1988 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru

Herbal, subtle smoke, a little austere. ’86 is actually showing superior tonight. Palate is still good, a little darker. This feels like a bit of a miss and I like ’88 red burgundy more than most.

  • 1986 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru

Surprisingly beautiful nose. Fresh, pure, clean. Nice surprise, outperforming the ’88 materially. Palate is trending more secondary but still has nice red fruit with some fall spice. Maybe a value here? 93 - 94.

  • 1985 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche Flawed

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru

Minty liquorice. Slightly corked. Not badly, just muted all round. The only flawed bottle of the program.
