Cote d'Or
Tasted Wednesday, November 10, 2021 by Burgundy Al with 405 views
Tasting with Technical Director Frédéric Barnier, who made the great decision that we should focus on Puligny-Montrachet and Gevrey-Chambertin. For the Puligny-Montrachet 1er Crus, we tasted in pairs going from north to side. For the Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru pairs, we tasted adjacent vineyards together.
Tasting with Sophie Dormont. Our tasting was cut short by a giant stone crashing to the ground in the white wine cave due to construction in the street, so we stopped our tasting with the reds.
Barrel tasting at the domaine from a single new oak barrel. Black berries here from start-to-finish, coming across as rich and balanced in its youth. Good weight as well for its level, likely to drink well young.

Barrel tasting at the domaine from a single new oak barrel. Floral and spiced with fleshy black and red cherry. On the ripe side, with enough background structure in support. Good potential, probably also easy to enjoy younger than typical for Volnay 1er.

Barrel tasting at the domaine from a single new oak barrel. All black fruit with roasted meats. Powerful character, clearly backward and tannic with a brightening minerally finish I really liked. Will reward patience. Good+ potential for its level.

Barrel tasting at the domaine from a single new oak barrel. Meaty black fruit with lots of density for its level, even ending with charming textures and good length. Good+ for its level.

Barrel tasting at the domaine from a single new oak barrel. Very pretty, charming and balanced in style more elegant than many 2020s (apparently drought had less impact here because of some August 1 rain). Even more engaging than usual this vintage, good for medium-term enjoyment.

Barrel tasting at the domaine from a single new oak barrel. Sweet core of black fruit that seems very open and accessible to start, but then also showing sneaky good structure from middle forward to its long-ish finish.

Barrel tasting at the domaine from a single new oak barrel. Elegant aromatic start showing bright red fruit and spice notes. Similar flavor profile but more firm than I expected. The good density here indicates this will cellar nicely and slowly, so I wouldn't even try a bottle until 2030 forward.

Barrel tasting at the domaine from a single new oak barrel. Near sweet black fruit, clearly rich and borderline jammy, but it easily retrains brightness. Will drink well young, but has the stuffing and structure to drink well for a couple of decades as well.

Barrel tasting at the domaine from a single new oak barrel. Meaty and all back fruit with lots of structure that is ever-present without ever overpowering. Dense, yet balanced. Lots here, I like its 91-93 point potential, 2032 forward.

Barrel tasting at the domaine from a single new oak barrel. Engaging red cherry and berry throughout, nicely spiced, with very bright textures. Not a wine for which Faiveley is well know, but one of their wines I tend to really enjoy. 93+ point potential.

Barrel tasting at the domaine from a single new oak barrel. Also all black fruit here, meaty, dense nearly brooding start, then well spiced in the middle, opening it up towards it long and powerful finish. Good potential, 91-93 points, 2035 forward.

Barrel tasting at the domaine from a single new oak barrel. Black and red cherry throughout with great balance, but a surprising degree of accessibility. Not as much density as the Latricieres, but absolutely more nuanced already and charming, yet enough structure to hold for a few decades. 91-94 point potential, 2028-2045.

Barrel tasting at the domaine from a single new oak barrel. More red vs black cherry here with subtle meat and savory spice. Good structural spine that keeps this going towards its long finish, while never dominant. Very good balance, good+ potential for its level.

Tasting with Alex Moreau
Tasting at the domaine. Floral start with plenty of ripe apple, which follows through on the palate but brightens up middle-to-finish. Very good depth and length for its level. A very good village level wine.

Tasting at the domaine. Apple, baked apple and lots of spice, slightly more of the sweet than savory kind. Good weight and length for its level, this will merit time in the cellar for the vintage to subside and terroir to emerge.

Tasting at the domaine. Also rich, with even better concentration than Maltroie. Starts off seemingly fat, then brighter on long-ish finish. Also better to cellar at least a few years

Tasting at the domaine. Even richer yet, and with great concentration, especially on the finish. This too reward patience. Combination of Fairendes and Cardeuse, which are nearly at opposite corners of Morgeot.

Tasting at the domaine. Apple, pear and quince with floral charm and savory spice. Long minerally finish. Least fleshy, most concentrated, and most energetic of the 1er Crus tasted here today.

Tasting at the domaine. Richness dominates, but with enough energy for good balance. Fun and simple. Good+ for its level.

Tasted at the domaine. Lots of green, yellow and red apple, certainly ripe, also very fun and bright enough. Probably best to enjoy on the youngish side, 2023-2027, with 88-90 point potential.

Tasted at the domaine. Ripe orchard fruit throughout with good balance. Not quite as vibrant or exciting as the 2019 tasted earlier, and this should drink well earlier, 87-89 point potential.

Tasted at the domaine, also already assembled. Floral start with fun aromas and flavors of apple, pear and lemon curd. Moderate concentration, good length. Also a fun wine for young-ish enjoyment, 89-91 point potential.

Tasted at the domaine, also already assembled. Ripe and lemon, rich but also very bright and texturally engaging. Long minerally finish has enough acidity that almost comes across as tart. Very good length. Terroir I like a lot, 92-93 point potential, 2024 forward.

Tasted at the Domaine, wine already assembled. Floral and rich with some good energy, but the vintage ripeness is more prevalent here. Still very good.

Tasted at the domaine, wine already assembled. Rich like many of the others from 2020 but showing an impressive degree of concentration. Luis but we’ll balanced with good potential.

Tasted at the domaine, wine already assembled. Bright apple and lemon throughout with lots of tension and energy for the vintage, plus a long finish. One of my favorites again in 2020.

Tasted at the domaine, wine already assembled. Ultra contracted with lots of apple, baked apple and faint tropical hints. Great concentration, and wonderful finessed textures nicely support the ripe fruit profile. Excellent overall, even almost as impressive as the 2019 tasted earlier.

Tasted at the domaine. Rich apple throughout with floral notes and a mineral accent on the finish. Maybe not quite Grand Cru density (yet), but this has a long, impressive lingering finish. Intriguing potential. From young vines.

Tasted at the domaine. Certainly ripe, more black vs red fruits, slightly firm finish. This is certainly good and will drink well young, but I definitely preferred the Cardeuse.

2020 Louis Jadot Gevrey-Chambertin
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin
Tasted at Jadot. Ripe black cherry comes across as slightly jammy right now. The start could easily be mistaken for something "new world" in its style, but the minerally finish is clearly classically Burgundy. Good Village level wine for early pleasure.

2020 Louis Jadot Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Combe aux Moines
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
Tasted at Jadot, alongside Cazetiers. Ripe black fruit, comes across as soft, fun and fleshy. Prettier and more approachable than Cazetiers with less assertive tannins, this should also provide good medium term enjoyment from 2026 or so, 89-90 point potential.
