Small glass, brief note. Bright yet mature red fruit throughout, complex and refined, still firm structure in the near background. Very good length. Very good now.
Small glass, brief note. Maybe a hint more madeira than ideal, but that didn't fully obstruct the ripe and powerful fruit still there. An intriguing sweet & tart character that might not thrill everybody, but I enjoyed this afternoon, 90 points.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. Bright lemon, some apple, still nicely fresh with some ripe hints but more green (not in the bad way). Good length with a still energetic finish.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. Ripe, fleshy, and powerful, barely evolved. Not awkward, but not forthcoming, even if clear how much stuffing and concentration is here. 92 points for its pleasure today, but clear 95+ point potential, 2032 forward.
Yellow and green apple with chiseled mineral and saline textures, brightly supporting everything else. Very good length and persistence. Tasted 3 or 4 times through the afternoon, this kept opening up and lengthening.
Small glass, brief note. Fully mature but still easily lively and charming. Very good density for its level, with a long, complex finish that alas did show the vintage warmth more than I'd consider ideal.
Small glass, brief note. Slightly dirty in way Philippe's wines simply were. You like them or you don't. But wonderful balance with medium power, showing its Vosne-ness clearly.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. Intense red fruit is really dominated by the wine's structure, with classic DRC spice further in the background. This wine continues in a trajectory of closing down, seeming more backward each time I have the opportunity to taste it. I will not open a bottle until 2030 or later.
Small glass, brief note. From the late 70s or early 80s. Mature apple, good weight and remaining textures. I am rarely a huge fan of older Champagne, so had low expectations and was very pleasantly surprised here.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru
Old school, classic Gevrey, this wine would be difficult to mistake for any other appellation. Meaty, brooding, leathery with mature black cherry and some faint barnyard notes. Clear Grand Cru density.
Small glass, brief note. Dense and powerful fruit, but more powerful structure. I have always liked this wine, but never as much as others have, because I have never found it perfectly harmonized.
Small pour from magnum, brief note. Dense black plum, currant, cassis with roasted meat. Still firm, this seemed similar to a wonderful bottle tasted last year, but less accessible (partly due to magnum format), but same great properties and potential.
Small glass, brief note, alongside the 2001. Soft, layered, and wonderfully elegant. Engaging balance of mature and fresh aromas and flavors, lots here with good weight and a sneaky long finish.
Small glass, brief note, alongside the 2000. Black and red cherry with lots of power, well supported with plenty of structure in the near background. Meaty and just a bit earthy through to its long and lingering finish. Further upside here. Once again, I clearly preferred the 2001.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
Small glass given to me as I was leaving, brief note. While there is still an underlying firmness here. so much black cherry and berry seem to working miracles in my mouth with spice, roasted game, and liqueur hints. So much here it simply captured my attention. This is just a few years (or hours decanted) away from matching (exceeding?) the greatness of the 1999.
