Napoli in Bocca, Haberfield
Tasted Wednesday, March 2, 2022 by chatters with 109 views
came off the bench to join the tasting after enough rain came down to scare most Australians away from tasting wine...
As always tasting blind is such fun - humiliating and empowering all at the same time...a pleasure
2015 De Salis Wines Blanc de Noir
Australia, New South Wales, Central Ranges, Orange
Served blind.
Very champagne on the nose; lemon, bread yeast, biscuit, a little honey implies a touch of age. that age note is on the palate, a little warmth on the back of the throat, coarse mousse, citric tang, slight texture, acid is a bit pointy.
The alcohol warmth combined with the age characteristics made me lean more towards new world but I plumped for NV Champagne. Damnation.

First of a brace of proper face plants as I thought this was a 6 year old Margaret River Chardonnay.

1995 Penfolds Chardonnay Trial Bin

Butter tends to butterscotch, caramel, oxidised underpin. In the mouth it's pretty much all tertiary; caramel, toast, honey, butter, slight alcohol warmth.
I guessed Australian Chardonnay from South Australia 1995 (lucky)

Slightly sharp, honey, bruised apple, a little volatile with wood glue. Juicy, slightly bruised apple, waxy, textured grip. Wood glue again. It's a bit out of whack and tired.

2003 Bass Phillip Pinot Noir

A little gamey, volatile, then muted black fruits, a little whole bunch, defo whole berry, wood glue, sweet spice. Sourly juicy, massive tannic grip closes down the palate, black hued and concentrated fruit, alcohol heat on the back palate.
I guessed old wine, possibly Spain from e.g Priorat, with about 15 years and probably a Carignan Grenache blend

1989 Château de Fieuzal
France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
Served blind.
Aged, leather, wetly fresh nose, red over black fruit with a little bramble. medium plus acidity, fresh, easy, juicy, talc textured tannins are persistent. Balanced, lovely.
Defo Bordeaux, left over right but without the weight so Pessac and 1988 to 1990 was my guess.
