Introduction

A look at Echézeaux and Vougeot - (2001-2008)

Flight 1 - Echézeaux Flight (4 Notes)

  • 2008 Gros Frère et Sœur Echezeaux 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

Very light crimson colour, the perfumed bouquet has an oriental spice, liquorice, dry moorland scrub and sweet red fruit.
A muscular/athletic wine with richness and power filled with soft, sweet red plum, Bing cherry, raspberry, and plenty of spices. Concentrated with gutsy, slightly burly tannins, the overall feel for the wine is svelte, athletic wine that finishes long. A soft cherry lips sweets on the back palate almost slightly salted?

  • 2002 Daniel Bocquenet Echezeaux 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

Light to mid-crimson. The tertiary nose reveals fynbos, rosemary, sous-Bois and button mushroom.
The entry is intense in this medium to full-bodied Echezeaux with wet strawberries, blackberry, liquorice, marmite and hung game. Complex, the fruit is ripe; rather a coarse, chewy texture, the wine has terrific purity, precision, power, and strength. Elements of spice and oak meet the more black cherry fruit and towards the extended finish.

  • 2001 Domaine Bizot Echezeaux 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

Light ruby colour but cloudy, the bouquet shows rooibos tea, spice, Sous-Bois, and balsamic with rhubarb, moss and wet fruit like strawberry in a damp cardboard container.
Some evolution, the entry is initially odd with a reductive chalky note that evolves to be slightly metallic. With a muscular frame, this medium-bodied wine has notes of orange peel raspberry, orange peel and strawberry with a gentle spicy note and chalky edges.
Fuzzy in texture, the tannins become firmer and somewhat grippy, and the wine feels rather rustic. Touch of oxidation on the finish.

  • 2001 Domaine / Maison Vincent Girardin Echezeaux 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

A light crimson red with an orange rim.
A lovely perfumed, bright nose filled with rhubarb, black cherry, Raspberry and strawberry. An attractive and focused entry, this full-bodied wine gushes grace and flair. There is muscle and power, clean and sappy with excellent intensity. Expressive with a good depth of flavour without being concentrated, this svelte wine has an incredibly delineated delicate feel yet has richness oozing out. Flavours of cherry and red fruits abound. Superfine, the tannins is precise and tightly wound and lead to a persistent farewell! Amazing!

Flight 2 - Clos de Vougeot Flight with a 1er Cru Vougeot (3 Notes)

  • 2008 Joseph Drouhin Clos Vougeot 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

Very light crimson red, the nose is ethereal with an intense cherry perfume.
The palate has amazing silkiness, purity and precision with mineral, plum, cherry, raspberry and strawberry.
Refined, very elegant and poise, this Vougeot has fabulous layers of fruit, excellent concentration, a super soft downy texture and long finish. Extremely appealing, the mid-palate has ripe red fruits sprinkled in a few soft herbs and orange peel. Finely-grained silky tannins.

  • 2005 Domaine Fourrier Vougeot 1er Cru Les Petits Vougeots Vieille Vigne 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vougeot 1er Cru

Light+ crimson colour with orange rim.
The bouquet is initially farmyard pong but slowly morphs to air dried meat, Sous-Bois, tinned cherry and mineral. Rather good nose and this continues onto the palate with bright acidity, ripe red cherry, rhubarb and sweet notes. Medium bodied, the wine is intense and has good depth of flavour, well structured with solid chalky tannins yet wonderful finesse. There is a subtly to the wine that is utterly appealing, clean lines and a persistent length.

  • 2003 Alain Hudelot-Noëllat Clos Vougeot 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

A plot close to Richbourg: Light cherry red with orange rim. An exhilarating perfume with fresh bing cherry, raspberry and strawberry. There is a tropical element like peach melba. Intense nose leads to a graceful, elegant wine that is smooth and supple texture and filled with amazing purity of fruit. More cherry, raspberry and strawberry join to provide stuffing and a creamy underbelly, the wine is ripe and possibly from a warmer vintages. Not quite the precision of acidity of a top vintage but still a fabulous wine.

Flight 3 - Clos de Vougeot from Jean Grivot, 2 vintages (2 Notes)

  • 2007 Domaine Jean Grivot Clos Vougeot 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

A light crimson colour with pure fruit aromas of cherry and strawberry and a touch of graphite.
A freshness with bright fruit on the palate and bracing acidity the wine has grace but also muscle, athletic in its gait. Good fruit intensity dotted with spice and orange peel, the wine has a firm, granular tannins and is quite tight. Reasonable fruit intensity the mid-palate is a little thin despite its sweet fruit and lacks depth. The back palate has little more red fruit as well as black cherry.

  • 2004 Domaine Jean Grivot Clos Vougeot 86 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

Light to mid crimson towards a wider orange rim. The initial aromas are herbaceous and a little green. The palate entry is also a little stemmy and acidic with mineral and rather lean. Quite dry and accentuated by pepper and stem spices, the back palate has a hard bitter edge that lacks appeal. A difficult wine as it had obvious material that suggest extract and fruit depth of a quality site but I found it challenging.
