A Ridge Tahoe Weekend

Introduction

We booked this adventure well over a year ago which was perfect (very hard when a winery comes up with an event that is just a few months away). At the time we had absolutely no conflicts and in fact with the date change it worked great to feed into a visit to family in Portland and short Willamette visit as well.

Flight 1 - Welcome! (2 Notes)

At the front welcome desk in addition to a cava that the hotel was pouring was a Ridge greeting committee with the Lytton Estate Rose. We hadn’t had that before so was fun to try. A few hours after we checked in there was a knock and a bottle of Grenache Blanc was delivered. We had our first glass as a weekend starter. Nice wine to have through the weekend.

  • 2022 Ridge Rosé Lytton Estate

USA, California, Sonoma County, Dry Creek Valley

    (6/29/2023)

It always amazes me the breadth of wine that Ridge is able to create with the quality that they also have. It’s quite impressive. I think maybe vaguely I knew there’s a Rose but it is usually released in March which means it’s usually not around when we do our winter visit. This is slightly higher production and more available than previous bottling of wines were. Made from Grenache, Cinsault, Zin and a variety that I am forgetting. Very classic light Provence-style rose. Reminds me of drinking water lightly soaked in petals with a hint of that freshness from a stone or similar. It’s very classic and a nice way to start the weekend.

  • 2022 Ridge Grenache Blanc Adelaida Vineyard

USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles Adelaida District

    (6/29/2023)

Welcome to a weekend with Ridge bottle. This is a grape that I’ve always quite liked and I have enjoyed many of their versions of it as well. It’s more of a mouthful to it. Round and with some nice stone fruit. Easy sipper when we had some downtime during the day.

Flight 2 - Library Tasting & Reception (3 Notes)

First time in Tahoe and it really is beautiful here. We couldn’t have asked for better weather. The rain from the last few months means the mountains are all snow capped and the lake is full and yesterday was a brilliant blue sky and just perfect. Nice way to kick off the evening with a little gathering and a few library wines.

  • 2008 Ridge Chardonnay Monte Bello

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

    (6/29/2023)

I think if I were going to like Chardonnay then the Ridge Monte Bello would be in my sweet spot. It always reminds me a bit of honey and honeysuckle and a nice lightness and sweetness in style. Very fresh. There is something that is just a bit too ‘chard’ in it and so I didn’t drink the full glass of it, but fun to check in.

  • 2005 Ridge 40th Vintage Geyserville

    USA, California, Sonoma County

    (6/29/2023)

I didn’t spend enough time with this wine because I wanted to get to the Monte Bello and once I got there it was hard to want to go back. From magnum. This is young and peppery and feels to me like it needs significantly more time to be anywhere close to ready. Would have been really interesting to compare this wine to the first vintage in 65.

  • 1996 Ridge Monte Bello

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

    (6/29/2023)

Wow wow wow. This could end up being the wine of the weekend pretty easily. Out of magnum. It’s just humming. Starts with the nose which completely draws you in. We were all joking you could just smell this all day and be happy. It’s slightly herbal and black fruits. Reminds me of thyme and maybe some rosemary and all of that more interesting sets of flavors that you get from the Monte Bello site. A few weeks ago I was at a Margaux dinner and a person scoffed at the idea that there was any California wine tasted blind that could beat the big French ones but I wholeheartedly believe this wine can.

Flight 3 - Welcome Dinner (2 Notes)

Served buffet style which seemed to work quite well. There was also a 2016 Estate Chardonnay although I didn’t partake of that.

  • 2015 Ridge Syrah Lytton Estate

USA, California, Sonoma County, Dry Creek Valley

    (6/29/2023)

Blend of Syrah and Viognier which is a style I tend to like. My only reaction to this was just very young. Needs a lot more time to settle into itself. A bit big and more intense. Lots of pepper. I think will be very good with another 10 years+.

  • 2014 Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon Estate

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

    (6/29/2023)

Drinking quite nicely. We buy the estate wine every year mostly because you have to if you want to buy the Monte Bello which we love. This was drinking pretty well though. Kind of a classic form of wine. On the young side but it is drinkable now. Still more of the fruits with spices. Enjoyable.

Flight 4 - Winemaker Workshop: Monte Bello (6 Notes)

Likely to be one of my favorite events of the weekend. A chance to get to hear from the different winemakers including Paul Draper who is just a fount of knowledge about everything from different oaks to coopers to how to think about aged wine (and a quite charming story about a 1864 Lafite). Some takeaways - American oak is really important to the Monte Bello story. Yes, there’s a bit of French in there but don’t be fooled - that’s not what makes the wine. All wines are made with the idea that they can and should age. Honestly I think they undersold themselves a bit. I’ve loved the wines with 50 years of age. They said 15 generally but can of course be more. Picked an interesting set of years and nice to see the style of the wine come through across those but also the nuances. It was overall a very informative and enjoyable tasting.

  • 2020 Ridge Chardonnay Monte Bello

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

    (6/30/2023)

If I was going to have a favorite in the chardonnays this would have been it. Most fresh and light and easy drinking. Sweet and honey and floral. Lighter bodied. This is made all whole cluster with extended contact with the lees. There is purposeful oxidation when the wine is battaged to get the lees moved around (especially during the malolactic fermentation).

  • 2011 Ridge Chardonnay Monte Bello

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

    (6/30/2023)

This was pure butterscotch/caramel intensity. Maybe almost a bit toasty. Still that sweeter state. Maybe some pineapple? The most intense of the wines and a bit too much for me.

  • 2007 Ridge Chardonnay Monte Bello

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

    (6/30/2023)

Tropical fruits but what stands out the most for me it’s the acid is still comfortably there in the wine. Again the more honey characteristics. It’s drinking better than I might have expected although still a Chardonnay so not really my jam.

  • 2015 Ridge Monte Bello

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

    (6/30/2023)

Really fun to get to try this. Our wedding year wine. We recently purchased a larger format of it which based on this tasting we probably won’t open till our 50th anniversary. It is very young and pretty though. A bit more of a minty flavor to it. Darker fruits. Well balanced. All MBs are made with whole berry fermentation but fully destemmed.

  • 2008 Ridge Monte Bello

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

    (6/30/2023)

One of my favorite years for Cali cabs and this fit right in with that. It is of course very young. Lots of blackberries and brambles. There’s a flavor that I can’t quite place that’s like some type of wild grass maybe. This was double decanted before pouring and it was maybe more open than either of the others right in the beginning but it hasn’t had time to evolve quite the same way the ‘99 has and it surpassed it.

  • 1999 Ridge Monte Bello

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

    (6/30/2023)

The only one of the MBs that was really in drinking window and yet there’s plenty of life for this. Starting to get a bit more sweet black fruits and more pepper and spice notes. Very classy in style. It was a PnP and I’m not sure it wouldn’t have benefitted from the double decant that its compatriots got. Took some time but did open up towards the end of the tasting.

Flight 5 - Catamaran Cruise (2 Notes)

Ok - so probably not actually a catamaran and more of a yacht style boat but this was just a lovely afternoon. Wine was all Ridge which was great. Something quite enjoyable about being out on a boat on a really beautiful day.

  • 2022 Ridge Valdiguié Frediani Family

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Calistoga

    (6/30/2023)

Found myself quite enjoying this for a wine which was well matched to time and place. Best described as the gamay of Northern California. Did with half carbonic maceration and half standard. Enjoyable and just very quaffable. Given we were out boating on Lake Tahoe this was kind of the perfect wine for the occasion.

  • 2021 Ridge Falanghina

    USA, California, North Coast, Mendocino

    (6/30/2023)

From a grape that originally came from the shin part of the Italy boot (Napoli). First time to try but interesting to see. It has a bit more heft to it than some of the Italian white varieties that I generally like. The winemaker described it as almonds and peaches and I can see that. It’s easy drinking although funnily enough perhaps a bit more intellectual than the red we had. Both great for boating though.

Flight 6 - Dinner at the Bistro (1 Note)

Lucky to have someone when I checked in suggest that we grab a dinner reservations for the night so we were able to get into the bistro. Wine list was all over the place but the Corison is always a safe choice and it was no different today. Enjoyable but much too young.

Flight 7 - Wine Conversation: Ancient Vines (3 Notes)

Funny because we walked out of our room and I will definitely need my coat and then in the next 15 or so minutes we got out by the water in the sun and I was using to to shade myself. The only perhaps downside to this was the sun didn’t do good things for the wine and it was hard to have a few glasses out in it. Otherwise beautiful setting and an interesting conversation about older vines which is something that I’ve always enjoyed (places like Australia are always quite proud of what they have there). Different from some places in France where it’s hard to manage the lower yield and so there’s a greater interest to change out. Nice to see Ridge focusing on some of the history of the places (which they did as well as they do their conversations on wine making itself).

  • 2019 Ridge Evangelho

USA, California, San Francisco Bay, Contra Costa County

    (7/1/2023)

My first time with this wine. Interesting. It comes from a vineyard that is all sandy loam (think basically a beach). Means that it is planted on old French rootstock. Vines from the 1880’s and some from the 1890’s. There’s been maintenance and replacement as needed in the vineyard but overall these are proper old vines which fits with the theme of the tasting. This is very easy drinking. Kind of smooth in style. Pepper and red fruits. One of the first wines that gets picked. A nice blend across Carignane, Zinfandel and Mataro. The Carignane is the primary which you don’t see so often. Works though. Not a wine really for aging but one that drinks well young. Would be interesting to do a food pairing with it. Suspect that would bring the wine alive a bit more.

  • 2015 Ridge Zinfandel Pagani Ranch

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Valley

    (7/1/2023)

Drinks really quite well and even when I came back after the 05 Lytton (which was clearly the winner of this flight) this was still drinking quite nicely. Darker fruits. Pepper. Raspberry. There’s this kind of tension in the wine between the dark and almost brooding and brightness. I suspect this is a wine that would benefit from some additional age. The years it already has look good on it. From vines that were originally planted in the 1890’s and then filled in post prohibition. Very enjoyable.

  • 2005 Ridge Lytton Springs

USA, California, Sonoma County, Dry Creek Valley

    (7/1/2023)

The winner of this group. From a magnum. One of my takeaways from this day of Ridge drinking is we don’t drink enough Lytton Springs. This was just really tasty. Almost an uname character to the wine but with great fruit. It’s very nice drinking. Field blend of century old vines. It’s got a truly long life ahead of it and I don’t think this is actually the right drinking window but it was quite enjoyable nonetheless.

  • 2022 Ridge Alder Springs

USA, California, North Coast, Mendocino County

    (7/1/2023)

Very light and easy starter wine. I’ve seen this style before with some whites from Argentina where it’s clearly made for warmer weather. Very much reminds me of drinking water from a stream out in the woods with a bunch of stones. Very refreshing. Good minerality. Very light and easy.

  • 2013 Ridge Chardonnay Monte Bello

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

    (7/1/2023)

Just a quick sip of this - can’t remember the last time I’ve had so much chardonnay but so it goes. This is again that butterscotch candy note. It’s a pretty style. Somewhere in between the intensity of the 2011 and the 2007 but maybe more towards that 2011. It’s too much for me but I can see if you like chard that it’s a very well made wine.

  • 1999 Ridge Lytton Springs

USA, California, Sonoma County, Dry Creek Valley

    (7/1/2023)

The surprise of the dinner for me - this was just lovely. It is actually still on the young side (poured out of magnum) with a long life ahead but wow was this quite tasty. Great black fruits and spice and while they tried to say it was getting its Bordeaux notes I hadn’t quite gotten there yet. It’s as though heading in a very nice direction with more time to go. Very good wine.

  • 1997 Ridge Monte Bello

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

    (7/1/2023)

Really interesting to see my last note on this because my impression of this wine was almost totally the opposite. To be fair there was some bottle variation across. The first bottle we had was just tired and done. The second and third bottle seemed to have more life to them. Lots more cigar and leather notes though than I would have expected. Still has the black fruits. My impression across all of the bottles was it’s time to drink this up. It started to open with some more time in the glass but I think initial impression still right.

  • 2014 Ridge Essence Geyserville

    USA, California, Sonoma County

    (7/1/2023)

What an incredibly interesting and unique wine and something that I would definitely like to have a bit more of around. It’s lower alc (13%) but long hanging vines. Raspberry primary flavor. Great pairing with a chocolate dessert. Just very lovely and medium bodied and drinks well. Fun to get to try.

Closing

Overall just a very well done weekend. I’ve always known that I like Ridge since we did that first dinner almost ten years ago in NYC but this showed a different side of the place. This is a group of wine geeks and I mean it in the best possible way. Tons of knowledge. It surprised me to hear that none of the winemakers have a degree but it’s clear they read voraciously and are very interested in all aspects of the craft. Impressive set of folks. And the people who actually got the event organized were just wonderful - magnificently done. We’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for the next retreat in two years (our vote is San Diego or Seattle).
