Introduction

This was a wonderful dinner hosted by Jim and Michelene for their 40th wedding anniversary. This was dinner number one of three that they are hosting to celebrate with friends. Don Saunders did the menu and cooking. As always you are in for a real treat with Don in charge. We were thrilled and honored to share in the auspicious occasion everyone in attendance. Thank you to Jim and Michelene for a great evening!!

  • 1996 Foreau Domaine du Clos Naudin Vouvray Moelleux 90 Points

    France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray

Dark gold color. Drank a glass over an hour plus. Orange marmalade, wooly, oxidative, baked apple, kumquat, apple peel and bitters. This has all the aged chenin character you want, maybe a touch more at this point. This can age further and it just depends on where you like them.

  • 2001 Dönnhoff Oberhäuser Brücke Riesling Spätlese 96 Points

    Germany, Nahe

Well, what Ben just noted....so harmonious - yes, yes it is. This was awfully damn good, shocking, I know. Lively, ripe fruits, a mix of tropical and orchard fruits, pineapple, mango, apple, peach, brightly floral, wax on the gorgeous nose. The palate brims with excitement; orange, tangerine, pineapple, red apple, peach; just so complex and intense. This has fabulous lift, along with that great powdery sweet tart brightness and minerality. Wow, splendid. 95+ to 96pts.

  • 2009 Faiveley Corton-Charlemagne 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

Light medium gold color. Drank a glass over 75 minutes. This was pretty cold out of the gate and took some warming to get it to come out, though even then it seemed a bit shy. Savory, mushroom, pear, earthy and damp, honeycomb, decent acidity, river stones. Showing appropriate maturity.

    Italy, Abruzzi, Trebbiano d'Abruzzo

Light medium gold color. Drank a glass over 90 minutes. Bold pear fruit, fleshy and dense, lemon, lemongrass, rich and creamy, oxidative, candied lemon peel. Even better than the last time we had this. Nice!

  • 2007 Domaine Dujac Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Medium dark red color. PNP, drank a glass over 90 minutes. Well this was quite a bit different from bottles a number of years ago, 2017 and 2015 specifically. This bottle for me was particularly herbaceous with a deep green streak that made it feel more youthful, but perhaps that perception was not reality. I'm not sure. There seemed to be lots of ripe fruit, a mix of tart raspberry more on the nose and pure cherry on the palate, texturally velvety, as Siggy noted lots of Nori notes too with stone minerality. This was showing notable vanilla on the palate and it was pretty full on powerful. If I'd never had this before, my impression was that this was younger than it is, but those other bottles didn't leave that impression. 91(+?)pts.

  • 1996 Louis Jadot Chapelle-Chambertin 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru

Medium dark red color. PNP, drank a glass over 90 minutes plus. Great nose with funky leather, dried flowers and spices, dried cherry, graphite. The palate shows lovely juicy cherry and tart raspberries, leather, forest floor, and minerals. Medium bodied, sleek tannins and nicely balanced. In a super spot.

  • 1983 Château Gruaud Larose 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Medium red color. PNP, drank a glass plus over an hour. Deeply earthy on the nose with all the dried wood I love, cassis and dark berries. The palate is full bodied, adding in a hint of boysenberry to the cassis and berries, leather, still some tannins and good acidity. Very good.

  • 1983 Château Cantemerle 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

Dark red color. PNP, drank a glass over an hour. Note taking was fading at this point in the evening. Leaves, black cherry, cassis, tobacco leaf, dense, a touch sharper on the finish. This was good, but not as well integrated tongiht as the Larose. 91+ to 92pts.

  • 2010 Château d'Yquem Declassified 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Small pour. Consistent with previous notes and still drinking very well.
