Yarra Valley

and, after a refreshing night sleep, our intrepid vinous explorers set out on their quest!
Despite a couple of minor cock ups (no one to meet us/no corkscrew) this was a good tasting - my favourite of this lot was the Chardonnay which I found deeply pleasing
Though there is a lot of enthusiasm for the 864 I find the vineyard series chardonnay's are the pick of the bunch here
Bacon fat, butter, a little peach, slight lemon, sweet spice and toasted oak. Juicy, tangy, reductive notes, lemon more in the ascendancy here, softly textured burr. Not as long as the mount mary but similar amounts of time for me. Hmm on the QPR

Peach, a little lemon, sweet spice, slightly reductive, savoury underpin offers a touch of salinity. With time a touch of toasted oak. Super tangy, fleshy, fruit still crunchy and fresh, plenty of textured grip on the back of the palate, lemon over peach, again that touch of reductiveness. Hmm.

A little struck match, bacon fat, peachy stone fruit, sweet spice, slight sulphur prickle, very slight clementine here as well. Medium plus acidity, tangy stone fruit here as well, softly textured burr, like the 2018 last night ripe and generous. time but pleasant, very pleasant in fact.

Citrus; lemon, a touch of green apple, sweet spice bacon fat present but less than the Willowlake touch of tomato leaf. Medium plus intensity acidity; quite tense, plenty of grippy drying texture, that bacon fat here as well, fruits present but more savoury, tangy, linear; front to back of the palate.

Sweet and savoury spice, citrus but more in the orange/mandarin than lemon space, a little sulphur prickle, bacon fat. Juicy, fleshy, tangy, again citrus; mandarin with almost a little grapefruit & grapefruit pith, textured burr rasps against the mid palate, currently the most complete of these single vineyard expressions for me.

slightly ashy whole bunch, cherry and red plum, fruit lozenges, sweet spice, caramel oak. Sulphur prickle. Juicy tends to medium plus acidity, plenty of textured woody tannins lend bitterness to the back palate, fruit gets a little lost behind this, raspberry joins the muted cherry and red plum here. Non-intrusive alcohol warmth on the finish. Meh.

Meaty, savoury, touch of whole bunch, smokey, peppery black hued fruits show brambles,. Juicy, savoury, meaty, black hued fruit is black berry and bramble, slightly peppery notes, spice, tannins are in support, drying, powdery, persistent, slightly out of whack but nice, touch of wild ferment.

Slight green capsicum, fresh blackcurrant, a little sour milk (?) dissipates, chalky mineral notes, caramel, oak. Juicy acid, grippy drying tnanins, chalky , grainy, fruit sits beneath this, still young.

Medium minus aromas, smoky, muted, flat smelling, with agitation that red hued Yarra Cabernet note, backed by herbaceous notes. Medium plus intesity acidity, a little more black hued on the pallate, plenty of wood and grape tannins, but last past the fruit. Hmm

All a bit meh today for me
Greengages, gooseberry, slightly passion fruit, touch of green apple. Juicy, tangy, similar fruit profile, with a touch of sweetness, tangy, very slightly texture lends a little tightness to the fruit. Non-intrusive alcohol warmth also joins here. Hmm.

Struck match reductiveness, savoury, muted fruit sits behind this showing bruised stone fruit. Juicy, a little flat, struck match, muted fruit again shows stone fruit though less bruised than the nose, grippy drying textured. Meh.

Again, slightly reductive struck match bacon fat, a little metallic note, muted fruit behind this, ooh, savoury and quite bitter on the palate, plenty of drying tannins close down the palate, touch of non-intrusive alcohol warmth and that touch of fruit sweetness on the finish, not for me.

Cream, butter, pretty red berry and sweet spice, a little meaty underpin. Juicy, fleshy, plenty of textured grip, similar fruit profile; raspberry & strawberry, the tannins overtake the fruit on the finish, otherwise pleasant enough

Cherry and red berry, ashy whole bunch, sweet oak spice. Juicy tends to medium plus intensity acidity, cherry and berry again, textured grip is oak derived and quite drying overpowering the fruit, oaky.

Slightly dirty/dusty notes and a touch of bacon fat get in the way of savoury, meaty red berry fruit. Acid is medium plus intensity lending a little sourness to that red hued fruits, tannins rasp against the mid palate are quite oaky, despite the high acid it feels, oddly, a little flat.

Meaty, medium minus intensity aromas, wild ferment, a little bacon fat, black hued fruits, simple nose. Juicy, savoury, dark hued fruits are slightly non-delineated, acidity sits slightly outside this, drying woody grip descends and closes things down, time and plenty of it to come together.

Medium minus intensity aromas of brambles and black berry and plums, sweet oak spice, caramel. Juicy, oak more to the fore on the palate, again black fruits which prove more tangy rather than fresh, a little fruit tea, tannins are grippy and drying <shrugs>

Slightly reductive, black and blue berry fruit, sweet spice. Juicy, savoury, touch of oaky bitterness, caramel, blue and black berry, drying tannins are in support, slightly chalky textured, simple.

Red and blackcurrant, caramel oak, sweet spice, slightly alcohol prickle, mint, eucalyptus, bay leaf. Oak dominates the palate, though offering caramel, sweet spice, plenty of drying texture, fruit doesn't get past this, unfortunately, palate dries out on the finish, time could help but, alas, probably won't.

yeah, this was mostly a bit special. Chardonnay was pipped by the Mount Mary today.
Very slightly sulphur/bacon fat notes sit behind peachy stone fruit, touches of sweet spice. Juicy tends to medium plus intensity acidity, tangy, grippy texture, peachy fruit here as well, a little savoury saline mineral note on the finish, simple, approachable, nice.

Super jubey cherry with a little savoury underpin. Juicy, tangy, less jubey on the palate, softly textured grip, cherry fruit, bone dry, a little solids grip on the finish. Nice.

Rich and ripe, slightly dusty glass, oak very present lending caramel, sweet spice, red hued fruits, cherry shows a touch of maraschino, strawberries, raspberries. Medium plus intensity acidity is integrated cherry, raspberry, strawberries, oak far more integrated on the palate. Long, very long, crikey.

Black hued fruits, plenty of savoury spice, meaty funky notes but cleaner with polished oak. Medium plus acidity, tangy, dense black fruits, grape skin tannins are grippy, fruit persists long. Nice.

Dusty glass, clay, earth, meaty black fruits, alcohol prickle lends pepperiness. Juicy tends to medium plus intensity acidity, black fruits are non-delineated - Phil says a little raspberry compote but I don't see it. tannins are tight, grippy, persistent, slightly drying and, despite being too much for the fruit, are good. Simple, very long.

Dense black fruits, concentrated a sense of power and weight, it's slightly sour and bitter on the palate, dark hued fruit, drying tannins, feels a little clumsy, perhaps time?

Ooh, reductive red berry fruit - here is the raspberry compote that Phil observed for me - dusty baking spice, very slight alcohol prickle, caramel. Juicy, fleshy, raspberry compote with brambly blackberry fruit, softly textured grip persists long in support of the fruit. Based on my previous tastings of this wine I'm surprised how much I like this.

Mint, eucalyptus, wild blackcurrant, sweet spice, a little red plum, almost pencil shavings. Tangy, juicy, medium plus intensity acidity, plentiful chewy tannins, fruit presents similar flavour profile. Like most of these wines at Yarra Yering this persists ridiculously long.

Tar and red fruit, herbaceous notes, a little tomato leaf and green capsicum, a slight hard green note. Meh nose. Medium plus intensity acidity, red hued fruit, slightly sour green tannins are slightly unripe. Nah.

Great tour of the winery followed by pleasant wines with the exception of the Yeringberg, which I found stunning
A little stone fruit, touch herbaceous, slight alcohol prickle, a little citrus note. Juicy tends to medium plus intensity acidity, tangy, savoury, surprisingly fresh, a little stone fruit, waxy without being glycerol, fatness. Hmm.

a little slighty fatty apricot, a little almond, slightly sweet spice. Juicy, apricot, a little fatty softness and glycerol fatness. Simple. Okay.

Plums over blackberry, oak well managed offering sweet spice, a little daramel, a little fruit tea. Medium plus intensity acidity, savoury, grape over oak tannins offer a textured burr, similar flavour profile. Long. Okay.

Blackberry over plums, a little meaty note, reductive almost rubbery, plenty of savoury spice. Medium plus intensity acidity, more plummy on the palate, textured burr grows with time and dries out finish slightly. Touch of non-intrusive alcohol warmth on the finish. Hmm.

Plums, blackberry, a little pretty jubey fruit lozenge, touch of ashy whole bunch in the background. Juicy, medium plus intensity acidity, plums, blackberry again but more savoury tannins are beautifully integrated, a little red hued fruit note on the fresh, good but not for me.

Pencil shavings, blackcurrant, plum, sweet spice. Juicy, fleshy, tangy, blackcurrant cream joins here silky but woody tannins, long, lovely does this a disservice, wonderful.

solidified it's second tier status
Medium minus intensity aromas of lemon, stone fruit, peach, white nectarine, a little sweet spice, touch of chalky minerality, very slightly reductive note. Juicy, fleshy, stone fruit is joined by a little apple, lovely acidity, slightly too much perhaps but pretty good.
Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue
Meaty, savoury, meaty notes, fresh herbs, citrus, slightly almost leafy greenness. Medium plus intensity acidity, a little crunchy citrus and apple, textured, super tangy, again, that slightly, meaty herby note. Front to back of the palate. Drying textured. Kind of nice.

A little solids work lends a touch of bacon fat, savouriness, slight floral top notes though the solids work rather dominates the citrus fruit. Medium plus intensity acidity, textured burr, negligible fruit, tangy, simple, a little apple <shrugs>

Struck match, a little stone fruit and lemon, sweet spice. Juicy, stone fruit is to the for on the palate, a little bacon fat in support, touch of textured rasp <shrugs>

Struck match, dominates muted fruit, sweet spice. Medium plus intensity acidity is quite sharp, again fruit is a little lost here, woody textured grip. Meh.

A little savoury underpin to jubey red berry fruit, clean, pretty. Equally jubey on the palate, very fruit sweet, juicy, mouth-watering acidity, a little textured burr.
Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue
Cherry, blackberry, a little sweet spice, touch of meaty peppery underpin. more savoury on the palate, juicy fresh acid, lacks fruit generosity. Meh.

Red berry, biscuit, sweet spice, simple, clean but with a touch of alcohol prickle, slightly green notes, spicy, earthy, tangy. Medium plus intensity acidity, red berry, softly textured burr, s'okay.

A touch of meaty notes, herbs, green, a little sour red snakes, Phil says Vitamin C and I agree. In the mouth it's got sour acid, red berry, chalky tannins, it's all a bit unpleasant.
Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue
Red cherry, blue berry, a little sour underpin. Juicy, medium plus intensity, red berry, a little candy floss, nice but slightly dilute, almost a little hoppy bitterness here as well. Odd.
Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue
Plummy, sweet spice, a little strawberry and raspberry in support, touch of carbo crush, whole bunch and a little clay. More whole bunch on the palate, the fruit is a little sour, just about the right side of sharpness, gritty tannic burr but fresh and carries long in a slightly dilute way. Hmm

Pretty, jubey, red fruit lozenge, sweet spice, a little austere fruit in the background, touch of forest floor. In the mouth it has medium plus intensity acidity, more generous than my last tasting, grainy texture, long, touch of plain chocolate and raspberry on the finish. Okay
Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue
Red fruits, sweet spice, meaty, wild ferment is noticeable, juicy, savoury, tangy, medium plus intensity acidity, soft tannins offer a little mid palate textured, simple, okay but not worth $90

Sticky fingers and messy glasses
stone fruit; apricot, a little peach, touch of almost white fig, waxy notes, almost garrigue notes as well. Interesting nose. Textured burr on the mid palate is charming, the alcohol warmth is tamed by this being served quite cool, stone fruit shows apricot and a little of that bitterness that viognier can sometime show. Nice though.

Aromas of cherry, touches of semi-dried cranberry, a little fruit lozenge, whole bunch spice, earthy notes. In the mouth juicy acidity and the ashy whole bunch is a little more to the fore, dry textured burr is quite like licking a pebble, fruit offers a touch sweet cherry and some bitter cherry stone on the finish. S'okay.

2nd bottle today - after our experience at the tasting room we picked a bottle up to take home. Plums, raspberry compote, cream, sweet spice, a little peppery prickle as Fizz observed. In the mouth it's juicy, red hued and plummy black fruit, plenty of talc textured tannins persist long supporting so much better than when I first tried this at the Qantas tasting all those years ago.

Big day of tasting was woof woof good. Highlights are straying to the numerous but Yarra Yering, Yeringberg and that Mount Mary chardonnay all showed superbly

2021 Mount Mary Triolet
Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley
Very very slightly reductive notes, slight sulphur, gooseberry, a little almost lime/lemongrass, touch of leesy notes and a pinch of sweet spice complete the nose. In the mouth it's juicy, textured burr, fruit less forward but all travels super long. Good but time.

2021 Mount Mary Pinot Noir
Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley
A little closed initially but, with agitation , black hued fruit shows black berry and a little fresh blackcurrant, savoury and sweet spice, a little earthy underpin, smidge of sulphur. Medium plus intensity acidity, sulphur, black hued fruits, a little on the skinny side, slightly woody tannic burr. Time

2021 Mount Mary Quintet
Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley
That lean, red hued note that I associated with (most) Victorian Cabernet. Red currant, raspberry, oak spice, caramel and vanilla. medium plus intensity acidity, red hued fruit is quite crunchy, savoury and sweet spices, woody texture is drying, it's quite disjointed but super young. Meh for me.
