Roy Hersh came to visit, bringing a plethora of bottles and his expertise. We took a break between flights 2 and 4 for a barbeque potluck dinner. A great time was had by all.
nose: more strawberry twizzler (the overriding flavor of most of the vertical, and I do mean that in a good way). SImilar to 1988 on the nose for me.
palate: exhibited more alcohol on the palate than on the nose, with strawberry, high acid, and some bramble that was faint.

nose: more earthy, higher in alcohol. boozy, almost. I also got a toast aroma (but that could have been the fault of the appetizers near by...)
palate: some alcohol on the palate, darker fruits and a shorter finish in comparison to the rest of the flight.

nose: some vegetables, some metal, and olives accompany the typical starwberry fruit profile of these Geyservilles. Even a touch of vanilla here and there.
palate: very full in the mouth, with a faint metallic sensation and cellar dust, all rounded out by very pretty fruit flavors. I found this wine graceful and complete. My favorite of the flight.

nose: a little smoky, with darker fruit and olive aromas again (similar to the 1995)
palate: thick mouthfeel, hefty in weight, this wine was "nice but plain" according to my scribbles.

nose: red twizzlers, bit of caramel, perhaps some dead leaves?
palate: (my glass was gritty from sediment) I found this wine to have more acid than tannin, with sour cherry as the dominant flavor. It was a nice wine, but I didn't find a lot of secondary/tertiary flavors, which was disappointing.

nose: different. mineral, stewed fruit, paper?
palate: hmmmm. Final verdict on this wine was "meh.' It tasted stewed, with a similar profile to the 2003, tho less alcohol. Jammy, dried fruit, nice tannin and acid balance, but flavors were not appealing to me. This flight was hard to push through...

nose: some metal, but overall, very jammy
palate: also "meh" like the 2001. Too much alcohol, kind of boring. Firm tannin (for Geyserville). I actually put this one ahead of the 2001 in ranking, though neither particularly appealed.

nose: red twizzler and spice, dirt, some oaky undertones.
palate: fruity (red), with acidity and tannin well-balanced. I think the acid won, though, in that battle. Sweeter, with caramel. Finished with a bit of dirt. Very nice.

This is my favorite of the 'new' vintages of Geyserville.
nose: cardamom, cinnamon, mellow spiciness, with a bit of green stem aroma.
palate: I love the spices, this wine is just so tasty! Roy Hersh said he expects it to turn into the 1995 with age. If that's the case, I need to find some! Finish is rather clipped, which is, in my opinion, its only fault.

nose: caramel and fruit, almost candied. Definitely got some alcohol, too.
palate: less acidity than the 'average' Geyserville, with more tannin and a much drier finish. It tasted young. I'll let my other bottles slumber for some time, I think.

I tasted this, but could not evaluate it well - just way too young.
the nose was liquer-like, with licorice and alcohol. Palate, again, had alcohol and licorice and was simply overpowering. I'm reserving judgement, since it hasn't even been technically released yet.

Roy's treat.
I look forward to tasting the remainder of the bottle over the next year or so. But last night's note is below:
nose: roasted nuts, orange rind, so complex.
palate: almonds and citrus. Madeira how do I love thee...

nose: dusty chocolate, maybe chocolate covered cherries. I remember being not too wild about the aromas because the aroma of dust was overpowering.
palate: very delicious, with chocolate cherries and nuts. Much better than the nose gave me reason to expect. Not very similar to port, it is much more chocolate-y, but with enough acidity to keep if from being cloying. Raspberry finish, with some moderate tannin. Pretty damn good, in fact

1988 Ridge Geyserville

nose: red twizzlers. A little dusky strawberry. Normally, twizzlers to me impies plastic-y sensation, but this was just a lovely sweet strawberry aroma.
palate: bing cherry, hidden tannin, acidity present and giving it life. I thought this was delicious, and it was my flight favorite, tied with the 1995 for my WOTN. Chris' WOTN.

1989 Ridge Geyserville Flawed

nose: brighter and deeper than the 1988, more brambly, but a little flat?
palate: stronger acidity, brighter and more intense in the mought, but not as intense as the 1991. Turned out to be corked, but apparently, I'm not that sensitive to it.

palate: more tannin than 2 previous vintages, but still subtle. Very fruity. Enjoyable, for sure.

1991 Ridge Geyserville

nose: licorice (faint) and very concentrated, dried fruit aromas. Sweet on the nose.
palate: very alive, substantially more tannin than the 1988-1990. Very vibrant and just fun.
