Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.2 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 20 notes)

Tasted by jpwines on 12/26/2009: This wine was tasted one month ago and was very enjoyable, in fact, we gave it a 93. The current bottle was terrible--strong port nose--obviously oxidized with a lot of bricking. Both bottles were 375 mls. and bought in the late 90's. They had been stored together in a pristine wine environment. Hard to believe that the one was so bad. Corks were fine, no apparent problems. I believe it was oxidized and not corked. (139 views)
Tasted by jpwines on 12/26/2009: We drank an identical 375 ml. bottle of this wine a few weeks ago and remarked how much we liked it. This bottle, however, was gone--terrible. It had a strong Port nose and had obviously oxidized. Both bottles were bought in the late nineties and were stored together in an optimal environment. It's amazing that one was still good and the other completely gone.
Both corks were fine, no apparent problems. The bad wine of course had bricked considerably. (142 views)
Tasted by winecat9 on 12/5/2009 & rated 90 points: Zin Thing 2009: Lightning Round selection. From the excellent 1994 vintage and still very good. This bottle seemed to have less depth of flavor that the last one consumed 2 years ago. Balanced, nice bouquet. (260 views)
Tasted by jlgnml on 11/27/2009 & rated 93 points: Pizza night with best friends (Our House): Sharp in the glass. great color and fruit. awesome and lots of flavor. (290 views)

Tasted by Squirreljam on 10/22/2009 & rated 92 points: From 750, a neighbor's recent Ridge library purchase. Soft cork, needed an ah-so, but the wine was [very] sound. Possibly a little reductive at the pop, given 15 mins of air a sweaty sock nose faded to nice soft faded fruit, earth, hints of spice n leather. On the palate, nice up front and middle, fading a little on the finish. Hint of stewed or plummy fruit, but nicely juicily acidic. Tannins have faded to non-existence, and a lovely clean finish, if a little short. One of my favorite wines in several weeks. (437 views)
Tasted by brl75 on 10/18/2009 & rated 90 points: Some bricking at the edge. The nose is complex...the fruit has taken a back seat to aromas of earth and spice. On the palate it's a bit thin...def in the middle of a downhill slide. Although there's still plenty here to enjoy. Drink up. (439 views)
Tasted by tarheel17 on 4/18/2009: Geyersville Vertical (My House): nose: more earthy, higher in alcohol. boozy, almost. I also got a toast aroma (but that could have been the fault of the appetizers near by...)
palate: some alcohol on the palate, darker fruits and a shorter finish in comparison to the rest of the flight. (761 views)
Tasted by linesider on 1/31/2008 & rated 90 points: (893 views)
Tasted by pgordon62 on 11/1/2007 & rated 90 points: Plummy fruit, sweaty saddle leather, licorice and autumn leaf. Drinks like a 20 year old Bordeaux. A pretty wine that is just a little past its prime and not as lively as the 1995 version consumed recently. Do not wait long on this one. (1287 views)
Tasted by cweiss on 8/19/2007: Joe and Amy's wedding. Syil;l dark fruit but no longer berryish. A little tannin remains, along with good acid balance. Has matured nicely and is holding well, but no reason to wait longer. (1418 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 4/18/2007 & rated 92 points: One of Joe's bottles if I recall correctly. Deep ruby in color, still fairly youthful looking in the dim light. Bright red fruit aromas mingle with a touch of leather and mint. Racy red fruit flavors on the palate, almost juicy. Drinking very well. (1444 views)
Tasted by pgordon62 on 3/20/2007 & rated 90 points: Delightful old wine, old world nose of plum, dried cherry, cedar, leather and a floral edge. Soft palate of earthy red fruit and a touch of licorice. Tannins are resolved with a nice acid balance on the finish. Full of character. Drink soon as it is losing its punch and focus. (1486 views)
Tasted by Rupert on 1/14/2006 & rated 90 points: Forthcoming nose, rich, ripe fruit, sweet, confirmed on palate, round, plummy, gentle - a lovely balanced mature wine, just on the downward slope a 90 at least. (2408 views)
Tasted by jdunnuck on 12/2/2005 & rated 94 points: Gorgeous almost old world nose of leather, red and black fruits and a little earth/forest floor. Medium bodied with great clean fruit, an awesome mouthfeel and perfectly integrated tannins. Friggin awesome. (1867 views)
Tasted by luko on 9/4/2005: from a 1.5l bot directly from the winery.....amazing. Balanced, lots of fruit, still youthful. Not a port in disguise. Best bottle of Zin I've had in ages..... (2058 views)
Tasted by thewinelake on 7/24/2004 & rated 90 points: UK wine-pages Geyserville Vertical (London): A real character, this one. Hard to resist its rough charms - a Del Boy of a wine. I like it! (2416 views)
Tasted by Anonymous on 6/25/2001: outstanding! (834 views)
Tasted by Veraison on 7/1/2000: ($20) WS gave this one a 91 and a spectator selection - it should be awfully tasty - I'll have to double check the description to see if I agree with what they have to say After tasting, I don't taste the same things that Wine Spec tasted- they say cedar and cu (660 views)
Tasted by Anonymous on 12/5/1999: lighter nose & body than expected, some thought a bad bottle, no
corkiness, others loved it, but muted earthy, peppery briary & red
fruits, not as layered or as long as other bottles (852 views)

California is one of the most diverse wine regions in the world, with almost 100 grape varieties grown in almost 10 viticultural areas, including dozens of different microclimates and soil types, as well as a very individualistic set of winemakers, many with international experience, which adds to and deepens that diversity.
