A bit past its prime at this point. Character of a Graves, still has an inviting nose at the outset, but rather thin and light-bodied with little support from what tannins remain. Some floral essence after an hour, then not much after that. Straightforward, one-dimensional, nothing to serve to friends, but not offensive. Drink now.

High shoulder fill, cork was extracted with a Durand in excellent condition. Color is deep purple with no signs of bricking. Extremely youthful nose, more black-fruited than I expected for DDC, with cherry and cassis, accented by earth, cedar and saddle leather. Elegant but with a richness that explodes in the mouth, with a smooth, seamless finish. I could drink this all night. Just an extraordinary wine.

finally, your tasting notes and score is what really matters but it is very nice of you to read my tasting note.

8/23/2016 1:29:00 PM - Thank you for the comment and Bordeaux suggestions. I only buy one Grand Cru Red Burgundy and one Premier Cru Red Burgundy per month. I only buy one Montrachet-non DRC per 6 months, the usual bottle I buy at auction is 10 to 20 years old so I can drink it soon after purchase. Again, thanks for the comments and suggestions.

8/17/2016 11:10:00 PM - Thank you both for reading my Tasting Note. The purpose of it was to evaluate which 2010 vintage Bordeaux to buy for the cellar.

I usually drink wine when it is about 10 years old. However, many wines I have cellared did not improve very much ( meaning it earns a higher score of 3 points or more) so, I strive to usually taste them every 3 years or so to help determine the peak.

8/22/2016 11:27:00 PM - I usually drink 1 bottle of 1982 to 1990 per month and 2 bottles of 2000 to 2010 per month. I buy at auction every week 2 to 4 bottles and that totals $20,000 per year. The ratio is 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot, 5% Zinfandel, 5% Pinot Noir, 5% Chardonay, 15% French Champagne, 10% Red Burgundy, 5% White Burgundy, 20% Bordeaux.
Auction purchases total $15,000 per year and my average bottle savings is around 20%. I no longer buy Sauternes as I have over 75 bottles and 50 bottles are d'Yquem. At one time 50% of my cellar was French but that is down to 30% today. Both auction sites credit back to me any bottles failing my inspection.

The Tasting Notes for 2010 reflect my thoughts on that day for each wine and also trying to predict the future-not very good at that. These days I enjoy Bordeaux from 1982 to 1990 that are in my cellar. Buying wine on futures, pre-arrival, auction, or from a store is always problematic. Currently, I buy a 2000 to 2010 at auction only if the price is worth the risk.

UWS (@ JB): Beautiful and creamy bouquet with good cassis, cedar and a pleasant touch of barnyard. On the palate a beautifully concentrated wine with good cassis, a beautiful balance between acidity, sweetness and bitterness. Young maturity stage now and really delicious. Will definitely be a great pleasure to drink until 2018 - 2020 and possibly even a bit later.

Closed at first, tasted direct from cellar at Silver Oak with staff, deep dark red color, black cherry and licorice and hints of smoke on the nose, opened slowly over the next hour, improved, needs 3 to 6 years to show its best, medium/long finish. blend of 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc.

  • Comment posted by bestdamncab:

5/7/2014 10:27:00 PM - I often bring French wine for the Silver Oak staff to taste as they rarely taste wine other than Silver Oak. In addition to the Cabernet Sauvignons they pour in the tasting room, they offer me a taste or two of Twomey wines-usually the Merlot and one of the Pinot Noirs.

I was not expecting much from this wine, considering the vintage and the condition of this particular bottle, which had a top shoulder fill and some signs of past seepage (plus a Mexican importer's label, so who knows how it was shipped/stored). The cork was saturated as well, and moldy on top, but was extracted pretty much intact with my Durand. Well, as much as we all preach the necessity of good storage, this battered and bruised bottle is a testament to the durability of BDX. This was like drinking liquid silk, so smooth and elegant, with gorgeous plum and sous bois flavors, and a richness that belies this lesser vintage. I don't have a lot of experience with this estate, but have been impressed each time.

Magnum Tasting at Yan's China Bistro, nose of cigar box, cedar, earth, and dark fruit, more of the same on the palate, tasty, opened a few minutes before tasting and very subdued fruit, medium/big body, and long finish, probably merit a higher score but it is what it is. My #6/7.

  • Comment posted by bestdamncab:

12/1/2015 10:29:00 PM - I was asked to taste these wines as they were uncorked, I tasted these 7 wines over 15 minutes. In general, each magnum should take 30 to 60 minutes to open so they did not reach their peak at all.
