Assessing this wine objectively, I don't know where I sit on this one.

On one hand, it is a tour de force - opaque inky-black, intense, powerful, concentrated with smooth tannins, predominantly black fruits on the nose and palate, full-bodied and a long finish.

On the other, after drinking a (young) Margaret River cabernet immediately before, it came across as overly alcoholic, clunky, port-like and jammy. Undoubtedly a wine of high quality, but not one I would be happy owning a case of for the following years, but one which I could see making many people very happy indeed...

This was my first Clare Valley Riesling and I must say I was not impressed. It may have been that it was compared with some really good German stuff, but this did not have the goods. The nose is very citrus with lemon, lime zest, fresh tennis balls, and a touch of petrol. The palate is fairly thin, highly acidic, and slightly metallic. The finish is not good. Unimpressed.

This is more than adequate value for what it costs, but I find the wine somewhat flabby and jammy. It could just be that I prefer a more old-world taste profile. I nevertheless would recommend this wine to fans of the style.

NobleRottersSydney - Clare Valley (Alio's, Surry Hills): [15%, screwcap] {DavidC} Big, hot raisin/prune nose. Full-bodied, low acid wine; ultra-ripe – over-ripe but not dead! – grape flavours; prunes, liquorice, soy on the palate; medium gritty tannins, lots of presence on the front of the tongue, medium length finish. If this note reads as stilted, it’s because the wine has a blocky, coming and going quality to it; this is a modern, fashionable, legitimate style of wine, but I think it’s one that always shows better young; this wine is close to the end of that ideal window I reckon, so I sense I’m tasting the last of the best of it. Get into it before it blows itself apart and turns into a black hole…

Decanted 1 hour. Pretty big, pretty fruity and pretty good. Beautiful aromas of both red and black fruits. Great mouthfeel with completely resolved tannins. Fruit is starting to mature and not a lot of nuance, not sure if it will ever come with this wine. But very, very good now if your in the mood for a larger scaled wine. Paired great with sous vide New Yorkers. Last bottle and glad I cellared.

Vintage Australian Wine Tasting (Extra Space): Lightly oaked, sweet fruity nose. Very fruit forward with lots of dark fruits, blackberries, jam hitting the palate. Nice sweetness. Spicy towards the finish. Still quite big in my opinion. Should have requested for it to be poured through the Vinturi before tasting. I think this wine needs a few more years to smoothen out, but will not develop any more complexity. Value for money if looking for a simple good Aussie Shiraz.

Opened for a good laugh. My last bottle of three. Turns out to be better than the last bottle but still way too hot. Very oaky too, end up using for cooking with lamb stew dish, at least find a good use for it. (F)

Colour: Dark Ruby
Nose: Warm scent with potent spice notes lending to earth.
Palate: Plum and berry open, whilst spices of pepper and aniseed dance on the tongue for a long finish. Low acidity.

Conclusion: This wine is potent, powerful and full bodied. Rewarding and enjoyable. Outstanding.

A gorgeous wine! Dark garnet, still completely opaque, no browning at the edges. Immediate pronounced aromas of black raspberries, roasted meat, earth, some sweet oak. Full-bodied flavors of black fruits, very viscous, still plenty of fruit, medium acidity, soft tannins, beautifully balanced. Long, jammy aftertaste which keeps going. This reminds me of an excellent Grange, but bigger and more powerful. This wine is not "Old", as Advocate now says. It's fully mature and I think will be excellent for another few years. No need to age it further, though.

Appearance: Deep Garnet in colour, approaching Tawny. ‎
Nose: Pronounced and heavy aromas of dark fruits such as plum and cassis. Very oaky to finish.
Palate: Dry and low-medium acidity. Medium tannin and full body. Spicy flavours and oak. Pronounced cassis and plum flavours as expected. You can definitely taste the level of alcohol if the wine is not left to breathe long enough.

After an hour in the decanter and then a further 20 minutes in the glass I was unsure if the wine was past its drink date, or should sit for longer - it is definitely a case of letting this wine have some time to settle out of the bottle and oxidise a little.

I would recommend two hours for the wine to air out of the bottle. The flavours opened up and acidity toned down. Fruit flavours further emerged and softened beautifully on the palate. This wine was rewarding, complex and beautiful, the length and finish just sublime, even after 16 years.

From 75cl, literally rotten cork extracted over sweaty minutes with my two-pronged opener, wine ruined: TCA and mould and rot. Quite why a supposedly excellent Australian producer still chose to bottle a premium wine under inferior cork as late as the 2004 vintage is beyond my comprehension. Screwcap had already been established several years, ideology can’t have been the reason... Anyway, congratulations! Your disgustingly ruined wine successfully disappointed this consumer (who bought it on release and cellared it under perfect conditions). NR

one hour slow ox in glass. Significant herbal and eucalyptus on the nose with nice cassis, french oak, and a bit of tobacco. Nice bright black currant fruit, sweet around the edges. Mature with just enough ripeness to state that this is in a really nice plateau. Lots of tertiary elements as this evolved through hour 3 with the fruit really shining. A terrific example of Clare Valley fruit - in perfect condition! Delightful!!

On the nose alone, this is probably more promising than the rubbish 03' Kilikanoon Shiraz R and unimpressive 04' Kilikanoon Shiraz M MaLaren Vale. Hints of oaks on the nose but not over-blown. Sadly oaks are more prominent on the palate, but still tolerable. Tannins not yet fully resolved, may take another 3 to 5 years. Slightly hot at finish with 15% alcohol. Plenty of acidity. Decent wine but not even close to being a 98 pointer. 90-92 pts.

This bottle was prepared to open on last Wednesday dinner and last Saturday party but last minute changed of plan caused me still keeping the bottle. But I accidentally dropped the bottle onto the floor and dented the stelvin closure has made me think that well it is time to open even I drink it alone.
Residual Sugar of 123g/l and 10.5% Alc.
Bright golden yellow, attractive nose of petrol, smoke, raisin, honeysuckle and hints of tea leaf. It has rich and concentrated sweet fruits entry, with lovely character of petrol and smoke along with honeysuckle, raisin and prune. Let the wine linger in the mouth and acidity start to flow through mid-palate and carry it through a long and light aftertaste.
This is an impressive wine and I would have mistaken it as a German Auslese. Well balance and terrific acidity made me finish up a 375ml bottle alone without cloying my teeth.

Giant Wine Sale & Tasting 12/3/2011 (Cellar on Greene, Columbia, SC): If you like big Australian Shiraz, this is for you. All the stuff we either love or hate is easily distinguishable with this wine. The color is almost black. The nose is relatively complex with almost explosive blackberry and blueberry fruit backed up with of course vanilla, but also some bacon fat, violets, alcohol and cedar. I also get some of that diesel fuel smell, that does not seem to affect the rest of the profile. The fruit is fresh, hard driving, in your face, blackberry, blueberry and dark cherry. There is that typical white pepper spiciness. Not quite full bodied, but still very complete in the mouth. Somehow they find a way to balance all that alcohol. Sweet little tannins. Has a nice touch of chocolate on the fruity finish.
