Magenta color. Lots of loamy and dusty soil on the nose, coffee bean, notes of cedar and pine, mixed in with tart black and red currant fruit. Starts off with a dose of refreshing acid, the fine-firm but grained tannins provide some weight for the velvety truit. Black cherries and red and black currant fruit, all of it ripe but crunchy as well, the wine glides across the palate. Complex notes of black tea, sweet cocoa, cedar and vanilla and integrated well with the earthy and herbal aspects. Needs time to expand but a beauty. Impressive stuff.

Mixed Blinds (My Place - Washington, DC): Bright red cherry colored. Cool red fruit bursts from the glass (strawberries, cherries and raspberries), along with a hefty dose of spice (oregano, black pepper, nettles) and some sweet coffee. Fresh and inviting on the palate with high acid, smooth tannins and tangy strawberries, raspberries and red currants. I like the kick of pepper, soy and wet leaves. The cedar and coffee notes are integrated well into the overall package. Bright and fresh but lots of complexity. Ready to drink but able to hold.

Initially very syrupy; nothing but blackberry jam and a touch of eucalyptus and bordering on unpleasantly sweet. After a bit of air, the wine started to balance out a bit, remaining very fruity, but smooth with little tannins aside from a whiff of cedar. This wine definitely still needs some further bottle age. I'm letting this go back to sleep until 2015.

88 @ PnP, but mellowed into a 89 after about 30 min, then fell off a cliff after 90 min. Not sure if this is shut down right now, but I didn't get as much tannin as I was expecting, and not as much flavor burst as I wanted. Definitely a dark berry flavor, mostly blackberry, and the tannin that exists kind of hides at first, showing the fruit, and slowly makes its presence known on the tongue after a few seconds to slowly hide the fruit. The wine coats the tongue like glycerine, but its just a somewhat weak flavor overall. Not enough tannin or fruit for my likes. I mean there's fruit, but it would never be confused with any kind of cab sauv fruit bomb. Over time the tannin that initially made its presence known on the tongue started to break down and reveal more blackberry fruits, but that's not to say the fruit got stronger... same amount, but less 'covered' by tannins. After 90 min this really just turned into a wine best described as "blah". Overall I found this to be very one dimensional and boring. Not impressed, and for the price I will not be buying another bottle.

Deep, dark reddish-purple in color; almost opaque. Full, forward & attractive nose of ripe fruit aromas of dark cherries, blackberries & cassis with overtones of earthy/dusty, some spice & herbal notes, minerals, mocha & a hint of oak/vanilla in the background. Medium-full bodied with a very good concentration of well balanced & smooth textured, ripe fruit flavors of dark cherries, blackberries & plums with herbs, spices, mocha, minerals, oak & vanilla. Lingering finish. Drinks quite well at present with decanting & extended airing but will develop further with some additional aging. Definitely made for a more early to mid-term accessibility. Very good QPR when found at discount.

This felt like the work of a talented winemaker that was working with tools and inputs they weren't familiar with. The brooding dark fruits lacked the intensity to rival the intensity of the casks. It was disjointed, and patience with air did not fix the contrast between the quality of the fruit and the quality of the casks. I would not have guessed this is Howell Mountain fruit.

Don't get me wrong, this is definitely a good wine, I just feel there is some wasted potential in the pieces present. It felt like the winemaker had all the right ideas but either the winemaker had a tough year, or I got an off bottle/served it wrong.

Medium lemon colored. Aromas of honeydew melon, ruby red grapefruit, apricot as well as a hint of sweet basil and crushed rocks. Tangy acid lines up with some richness on the body, and the result is a bold but balanced wine. Flavors of lemon pie, apricot and honeydew mix well with sea shell, mineral and floral notes. A hint of wax and nutshell on the finish. Bold but complex and lively. Fermented in stainless steel but aged in old oak, and I like the result a lot.

Similar nose to the ’10 but with honeydew instead of cantaloupe and with more of a floral component. Seems even more acidic than the ’10, which suggests that this could use a bit more time. Excellent.

Retail $25. Interesting nose and a wonderful mouthfeel. The wine was both acidic and creamy at the same time; I was convinced there was some semillion blended in, but it was 100% SB, aged in 2-3 year old oak. This is one of the best SB I’ve had in a while. Excellent. 90-92 Points.

Agree with 90-pt rating. This wine poured dark and frothy into the glass. The notes are "just enough" blackberry, "just enough" leather, "just enough" smoke. The wine itself is the PERFECT crowd pleaser, and probably would get you by in a pinch if you were throwing a party for guests that both did and didn't have discriminating tastes. The wine finishes rather nice, with stiff tannin and a hint of green pepper. This wine still has quite a tannic finish. I thought I had 2-3 more of these, but instead this is the last one!

Dark yet vibrant purple color. Deep nose: currants, blackberry jam, smells like you made a paste out of currant skins. Sexy aromatic display with notes of flowers, deep earth, granite and sweet pipe tobacco. Full bodied, firm tannins but they’re fined down around the edges, medium-low acid. Well-structured and full of black and red currant and cherry fruit, a moderate level of extraction. Significant toast and mocha, this is a delicious and hedonistic wine that coats the palate but finishes long and clean. I’d love to cellar this for five or six years because it’s got a lot of stuffing for the cellar and complexity to unpack. Just a bit young at the moment but a beauty.

Inky and lush, the 2012 Cornerstone Cellars Stepping Stone Cabernet has a nose that seemingly builds with intensity, with dulcet tones of crème de cassis, blackberry financiers, incense, dusty earth, and vanilla leading into an expansive wine on entry. Velvety, fine-grained tannin, and a lovely creaminess at the core lends weight and richness. Finishes with a pinch of tellicherry peppercorn and cedar. 14.7% ABV | Sample

Short decant. Consumed over 4 hours. Pretty good Napa Cab and excellent QPR. Decent balance. Mild tannins. Dark fruits. Bright. Would be a stunner if only slightly more fruit. Solid 90-91 as is...and 92+ if including QPR.

Powerful wine still improving. Good at PNP, but improves dramatically over first hour. Oakiness blows off and depth of fruit and secondary flavors emerge, including tobacco and eucalyptus. Short to medium finish but otherwise quite nice.

Tasted out of a Coravin since too many people say it's still young. For the most part the other reviewers are correct, this wine can use another 2-3 years in bottle but it is perfectly approachable now for those who like a younger profile. This certainly is nothing like a 2010 Barolo which still taste like a steel beam.

On the nose this wine explodes with fresh spring flowers and sea breeze. In the mouth it starts with creme de cassis, followed by toffee, ending with strong burnt wood. Tannin is still very firm but doesn't get in the way of the fruit, that's why it's approachable now but will likely be better in 2-3 years.

BTW this is the lightest color Napa Cab I've seen in many years, it's more of dark ruby than some CA Pinot Noirs.
