Retail $18. Under screw cap. After dropping off Nathan in Cleveland, my other son, Sebastian, and I were making the long trek back to Houston, close to 1,500 miles. On the way up, we had stayed the night in Little Rock, Arkansas, but finding the city, well, considerably less than enthralling, we decided to push a little further south to Arkadelphia, Arkansas (figuring, stupidly, that it would be similar to our "home" of Philadelphia--wrong). While the hotel was newly built and therefore fine, the dining choices were sparse. Since Slim & Shorty's was closed and the Waffle House does not serve booze, we settled on the Hamburger Barn. While my "medium rare" Mushroom Onion Burger was decidedly well-done, it was still quite good, I have to say (although I thought my side of onion rings was a bit paltry--there were four tiny rings). As for the wine, here was the list:

Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc

Meiomi Pinot Noir

End of list

So I opted for the former, which showed up warm ("we don't have a lot of people ordering this"), but it was what I expected: tart, fruity, cold. Wait. Just two of those. Very Good. 88 Points.

A lucky friend pounced on this for $7 at a local Grocery Outlet. It's a vivid, lush, concentrated and spicy version of PG far more in line with Alsatian product than the dilutely stupid bar wine Americans know as PG. Drinks expensive, like $40+. If you happen to trip over it, BUY.

Floral, tropical fruits and a crispness on the nose. Just to the light side of medium bodied, but it retained good depth (13% ABV). Tropical fruit notes upfront of passion fruit, guava and orange, backed with citrus qualities of lemon and tart orange. The contrast between the softer tropical notes and the more tart citrus notes leads to a wine of good depth and complexity. Acidity, mineral and herb notes on the finish. This has enough fruit to be enjoyable and enough acidity to be interesting. It's showing quite well at present and while it may improve slightly, this is a wine to be enjoyed now.

Easily the worst QPR ever. Enjoyed a beautiful day at Longwood Gardens Wine and Jazz Festival. The tent we were near ran out of good wine and we acquiesced to two 375 ml bottles of this at $20 each. The label lies about it “bursting” and being “exuberant”. There are so many incredible Sauv Blancs from NZ…the authorities should disavow this one here to preserve their integrity! (Ok, maybe it isn’t THAT bad…but I wanted to make a point here 😂)

Shy nose of grass, lime zest and green apple. Bright and zingy on the palate - where you find lemon-lime pair up with flinty minerality. Good.

Pale straw color. Bright, crisp aromatics: green apple, kiwi, nectarine, also some honeysuckle. Juicy, medium-bodied profile with clean acid. Juicy yellow and green apples, rich pears, mango, backed up by notes of honeysuckle and white tea. Clean, refreshing yet a plump and juicy personality. Food friendly, just not too deep or complex, but solid value for the price.

One off ($13) from Costco, recently bought primarily for putting into a scampi and crab macaroni and cheese. On the nose and palate, vibrant notes of grapefruit, lemon-lime, tart tropical fruit cocktail (mostly guavas and passion fruit), gooseberries, river rocks, fresh cut hay and a bit of oyster shell (this iteration seems lacking in cat pee, not a bad thing, as I have plenty of exposure to that through my own quadruped). Pale silver-gold, medium bodied, light legs. Very racy acidity, and not a trace of heat. Good complexity, VG intensity, medium persistence. Well, this is about the time of year when I’m mostly likely to drink SB, and the KC is one of my go tos as a cooking wine (and also to bring to the homes of my non-discerning wine friends when I’m in a penurious mindset). This was the former, and is often the case, I managed to sneak in a glass just to make sure I’m not consuming, or giving, something I wouldn’t deem fit to polish my silver—a task I’m perpetually remiss in—with. Since the high end of SB is relatively low for my tastes (easy there, Sancerre fans), the differential with the lower priced specimens, even those mass produced—and what’s more produced than KC at 2MM cases?—can be *relatively* minimal. While the ‘21 iteration of this cuvée isn’t quite the lightning rod of the ‘20 (I mean, when was the last time on CT you saw a handful of 80- TNs along with a 100?), this does seem to bring out a lot of barbs, which sort of feels like booing the short, near-sighted kid on your son’s Little League team because he hit a 20 foot swinging single when the team needed a home run. This cuvée, year in and year out, is always about an 88 in my book (kinda like Roseanne Barr saying that everything to a man is about 6 inches), remarkably decent and consistent, solidly pleasant to sip on a warm evening, good with light foods or pouring into foods. Yeah, it’s not Merry Edwards, Spottswoode, or Cloudy Bay (and there are, to the point of some other CTers, likely other NZ SBs that I might grade a tick or 2 better at this price point, as I might so grade the Hanna, if I wanted to make an avocation of searching for such things), but I’ve had worse SBs at double the price, and I like this better, not by a lot but enough to measure, than the $3 more GV from last week. Fear not, CT friends: my next wine will be a ‘19 Aubert UV chard, but if this is my brush with Vox Populi wine, I could do worse and you could, too, especially at this price point and volume.

Completely delightful grapefruit and grapefruit rind on the nose and the palate, very definitely there but not over-powering. Crisp, well-balanced, refreshing and very good with fried chicken, brown rice, and fresh wilted spinach.

When I think of Sauvignon Blanc right now, I think "we'll always have Kim Crawford." I really think this is setting the standard right now for value priced, exceptional SB. Grapefruit, peach and citrus on a huge nose, with more of the same on the palate. Just the right amount of pith for me - and I like pith, especially the bitterness and acidity (I often wonder if I'm describing this right, so, let me know if you think of grapefruit pith as something else that I'm not thinking of). If you like SB, a good cold crisp glass of white wine in the summer and want a quality bottle under $20, this is your wine. Great stuff.

This is very good and reliable from year to year. Pronounced grapefruit, gooseberry, lemongrass and canned white peach. The palate is dry but rich with tropical fruit. Very balanced, with medium (+) acidity, medium alcohol (13%). Tough to beat at this price point. It is drinking well now and will certainly keep for at least another year, although I don't see any reason to hang on to it.

Other NZ vinters have taken the mantle from this Marlborough original. Still hits the right notes (grapefruit, gooseberry, dusky guava) with the same crisp, clarity that initially made it unique. Now seems a bit tired and cliched. Can't beat the price, however - $10 bucks at your local warehouse store!

I call this one an afternoon “session sauv blanc” — fine drinkability, but nothing remarkable. 2020 is showing a bit more “tart” than years past with heavy expression of citrus. Not as well balanced as other readily available 2020 Marlborough Sauv Blancs...think Allen Scott, Dog Point, etc.

light lemon yellow, clear. typical Marlborough pungent aromas, a little milder in palate, passionfruit, grassy and subtle vege leaves. crispy acidity, medium/light bodied, short/medium finish with subtle minerals and salty savoury notes.

the quality of KC SB has been sliding down during recent years, meanwhile the producing climbing up, and yield as well I assume. However, it's still a reliable brand, providing consistently above-average quality.

Somewhat restrained, nice fruit and acid to balance, we find this wine dependable from vintage to vintage, drank with salmon, will drink again, a bit more structured than other NZ PN’s.
