12/3/2012 - fries Does not like this wine: NR

WSET Level 2 Class 7 (BCIT Downtown Campus, Vancouver, BC): Tasted blind, screw cap. Clear, pale lemon. Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, aromas of ripe tropical fruits, citrus peel, musky/grapey, and an unfortunate soapy whiff of cleaning product... Mr. Clean? Palate is dry, medium- acid, medium body, with flavours of grapefruit, light tropical fruits, and once again, cleaning products. Finish is medium. Quality if acceptible, but to me the fruit aromas and flavours are overpowering and artificial.

Palate is dry, medium acid, medium tannin, medium body, with flavours of bright red fruit... plum, red currant, and vanilla. Finish is medium-. Hard to assess quality... the overwhelming impression is the stinky nose.... possible flawed bottle.

Cork disintegrated when pulling, decanted for 2 hours, major sediment in bottle. Clear, deep garnet with noticeable bricking. Nose was clean, with medium+ intensity; aromas evolved significantly over 3hrs of drinking, initially quite raisiny, but clean black fruit, leather and spice emerged around the 1.5hr mark. Palate was dry, with medium+ body, medium acidity, very polished medium tannins. Flavours evolved from dried black fruit (raisins/prunes) at first to ripe plums and black currents, with a meaty/savoury undercurrent. Medium+ finish. A pleasure to drink with braised lamb; in a very good place right now.

Palate is dry with hint of sweetness, medium acid, medium- tannin, medium+ body, with flavours of creamy sweet brambles and blueberries, vanilla. Plush, with a medium finish that includes a lingering heat from alcohol. Quality is good, but not my style... fruity, confected and hot.

True to it's name, inky black in the decanter. Fresh out of the bottle, it's very hot, showing ample evidence of it's 15.5% alcohol. An hour and half later, the heat has receded and it's tonnes of dark fruit and spice on the nose. Palate is rich, silky and well-balanced, with a reasonably long finish. No further detail in my tasting notes, as I was too busy enjoying it with a scrumptious pre-Xmas turkey dinner. Highly recommended as a companion for a rich holiday meal...

Decanted for 1 hr... lots of sediment. Deep ruby tending to orange at the edges... showing some age. The nose is dried berries, cherries and plums, with lots of earthy herbs and a little meaty smokiness. Palette is warm and velvety, with some really complex spicy flavours, including lingering menthol and a little pine needle. Reasonable level of acidity keeps the finish precise... no heaviness. This bottle has aged well, but the fruit is going to be gone soon, so drink up.

Outstanding bottle. Decanted for 1 hr. Deep ruby red, a little lightening near the edges in the glass. Gorgeous spicy dark red fruit nose, dried cherries, raspberries, slightly plummy, herbes de Provence. Mouth-feel is lovely, round and very smooth, but the tannins are still assertive. Earthy cherry / berry flavors with a warm spicy / herbal finish of medium length. A slam-dunk with grilled bison steaks.

Deep red / purple in colour. Drank over two nights: Night 1 - Vanilla, red fruit / boysenberry, tart, lots of acid, short finish, a bit disappointing; Night 2 - darker aromas, lots of jammy cassis and blackberries, meaty, savory bacon fat, still lots of acid, more complex and enjoyable, but still shortish finish. Decent, but '06 was far better.

WSET Level 2 Class 2 (BCIT Downtown Campus, Vancouver, BC): Tasted blind. Clear, light-medium lemon in appearance. Nose is clean, with medium+ aromas of cotton candy, confected peaches (fuzzy peach candies?), no obvious oak inflence. Palate is off-dry, medium- acidity, medium- body with flavours of peach candy, dried pineapples. Finish is short, but with unpleasant sugar-weight lingering on the tongue. Acceptable quality, but little chardonnay typicity.

Decanted 1hr before drinking with grilled ribeyes. Minimal sediment. Medium ruby red with a touch of bricking. Nice leathery red fruit, tobacco, well integrated oak. Medium bodied, maybe lacking a touch of concentration, but with soft tannins and a pleasant crisp finish. Enjoyable with the steak... a "good value" Okanagan Bord. blend.

This my second note for this wine (previous one on 04/10/2008)... slightly different drinking scenario, and some exciting new aromas and flavours. Drank 1/2 bottle, left overnight in fridge capped, and finished tonight with Japanese noodles. Same sparkling pale gold color, oily viscosity. Especially on the second night after being open 24 hrs, the grassy-ness is largely gone and nose is overflowing with ripe fruit: guava, pineapple, sweet apples. The tropical fruit appear again on the palette, especially pineapple, with grapefruit, apples, honey and a mineral tang. The finish is warm and satisfying, with just enough acidity to be refreshing. Mmmmm...

No decant... lots of sediment when we reached the bottom of the bottle. Purple-tinged ruby. Ripe blueberries, pepper, savoury herbs with a touch of menthol. Medium-bodied, fine but assertive tannins, cool blue fruit and a crisp, spicy finish. Reminds me of a fruity Crozes-Hermitage.

[Synthetic cork] Very light orangey tint with the expected high viscosity. Upon first pouring, was greeted by slightly dirty reductive aromas (probably thanks to the synthetic cork) that seemed to blow off quickly with aeration. The fruit that emerged from the funk included peaches and baked pears. The flavours reminded me of a warm peach upside-down cake... sweet stone fruit, a touch of baking spice and subtle nuttiness. The finish was fairly clean, with enough acid to keep it from being too heavy. Paired amazingly well with Long Cawston Blue Stilton. A unique icewine, but perhaps a bit simplistic.

Clean nose with medium+ aromas of black currant, bell pepper, spice, chocolate, coffee grounds. Palate is dry, medium acid, medium tannin, medium body, with flavours of sweet black currant, cedar, chocolate, and a slightly minty/herbal note. Texture is very smooth, and finish is medium+. Good to very good quality here, as long as you don't mind a little bell pepper in your Bordeaux blend.
