1/1/2004 - kevin h wrote: 97 pointsAn historic note. I bought half a case of this wine (Danish Bottled) at Auction in London in 1998. No note in Parker so it was quite cheap (around £35 per bottle) - though Broadbent rated it highly in 1991. A truly memorable wine. Apart from one low level bottle that was badly oxidised, the other five were all consistently magnificent in the pure cassis mould of claret. Could easily have been mistaken for a Chateau Latour from a good vintage. Certainly it was better for me than the `61 Montrose and Grand Puy Lacoste that I have also had and it remains at number 4 in my all-time list of greatest wines drunk. I have had many bottles of Chasse Spleen from various different vintages over the years and it is one of my favourite Cru Bourgeois but this vintage really was in a different league. Worth seeking out. |

2/24/2014 - paulst Likes this wine: 96 pointsTar and earth nose; textured and lengthy with lively initially bitter tannins that later evolved into sweet with velvety blackberry, blueberry, cherry with sweet cedar and undercoating chocolate; finishes long with great texture and harmony; belongs in the classification; outstanding effort; still young. |

Glad we opened it because next year it might have not been the same pleasure. Served with a filet de canard from the BBQ (marinated with lemon and sage). |

3/27/2020 - alpinemartin Likes this wine: 96 pointsVery rich bouquet of various black fruit (plum, black currant), spicy (green and black pepper), tobacco, leather, dark chocolate. The 27 year old "youngster" has lots to offer with solid supportive but not dominant tannins. The body is quite “chewy” and the tannins so convincing that I can recommend to taste this wine for at least 5 more years to come. 96 points - highly recommended! |

4/16/2015 - JeandeTroyes Likes this wine: 95 pointsA number of years ago a colleague of mine who is a wine buff suggested to me that wines don't get better with age, they just change. I disagreed with him then, and this wine proves my point. As I mentioned 2 years ago, in its youth this was a very unpleasant wine. I have since watched it develop and improve to a stage where it has become an outstanding wine. Aromas of old chesterfield and a length that is just perfect. I can't agree with other recent reviewers - to me this is a stonkingly good wine. It may have a few more years left in it, but it is certainly drinking fabulously now. Easily the best non-Grand Cru Bordeaux (i have tasted) on the market. Life enhancing, in fact! |

12/5/2012 - gguyatt Likes this wine: 95 pointsTasted amazingly fresh for a 50 year-old wine, and really opened up after about an hour. Nice dark colour, tobacco and fruit notes on the nose. Still has life left...'61 bordeaux lives up to its rep! Amusing to me that it seemed like it needed time when we first popped the cork. |

1/25/2024 - Jake Barnes Likes this wine: 95 pointsSecond of three bought during a cellar sale, with a like-new fill, very shiny capsule, and a perfect, very tight cork that was only soaked a quarter of an inch. Didn’t need the Durand at all but used it just to be safe. |

2/9/2014 - Davyd Chong Likes this wine: 95 pointsMy second time drinking this wine. Classic mature Bordeaux nose, very delicate on the palate. It had an extremely smooth mouthfeel, the tannins have perfectly settled (or should I say, there was little to no tannins!), and the finish was clean, crisp and elegant. Medium finish. Lots of red fruits, cranberries, and a hint of lime on the palate. Lovely, lovely wine (to chase away melancholy)! Tried it again on day 2 and it was still good. |

8/2/2023 - Coastalnative Likes this wine: 95 pointsAbsolutely and utterly phenomenal. This bottle was perfectly stored. Cork came out fully intact and with great ease. Deep crimson color. Showing a beautiful array of both black and red fruits, subtle graphite and tarry phenolics. A touch of dried herbs as well. Still tannins present but they have considerably softened. This was just a real winner all around. I did not have high hopes but this particular bottle ranks among many more expensive 1989s that I have tried in recent memory. 2 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (1) |

1/4/2014 - Derek Darth Taster Likes this wine: 95 pointsDavyd's 31st Birthday Celebration (Goodwood Park Hotel): Tasted blind. Interesting nose with dried shrimp, provision shop dried stuffs, and barnyard on the nose. Doesn't sound appealing, but I like it. Lots of sweetness on the palate. Still some grapey fruits left. Also citrus notes. Elegant. Medium finish. WOTN. Surprised to learn that this was a 44 year old wine! Bottle, label, and cork all in perfect condition. The exact same vintage as featured in the "Drops of God" series. |

5/30/2019 - wineforth Likes this wine: 94 pointsEn primeur tasting at Lords. One of the few wines where the 18 was clearly better than the 16 and one of the better wines of the evening. Good body and loads of soft tannins. Well balanced and not overpowered by alcohol or tannins. The last time I bought Chasse Spleen en primeur was the 1989 vintage and that was the best cru bourgeois I've ever had. Alc. 13.5%. I've bought some. |

12/14/2013 - Paul D wrote: 94 pointsGood cork with minimal staining (bottle from TWS so impeccable provenance). Medium/deep garnet core, pale garnet rim. Nose shows blackcurrant, cedar, smoke and a touch of tobacco. Classic claret nose with good complexity. Medium bodied on the palate, showing beautiful balance with soft tannins, dark, savoury, slightly smoky fruit and balanced acidity and a touch of tobacco on the good length, harmonious finish. Excellent and I would suggest at its apogee. |

10/2/2019 - Snru Likes this wine: 94 pointsFound this bottle in our vacation house in Bretagne. What a surprise. What is that? About 20 years of age. Travelled from home back to France, stayed there for years in a rather lousy cellar, stayed another 2 years in a container during renovation and - an amazing trouvaille. No signs of age, perfect color, perfect cork, nice decent nose, full palette and a rather long and intense finish. Unbelievable what this wine did support. |
