I have been fortunate to have had the 1947 Haut Brion, La Tache from the 60's and 70's and a few others but this seems to eclipse them all.In the glass a nose to die for - roses, asian 5 spice, pine tar,red fruit, dark fruit and if you wait long enough it seems you can find mushrooms, forest floor - the list goes on. In the mouth a rush of red and dark fruits and Michael Broadbent's peacocks tail - again revealing flavor after flavor with a texture, concentration and finish that is nirvana.Maybe it is a 100 point wine but to me 99 is still nirvana. |

10/18/2007 - elliotgl wrote: 98 pointsAn outstanding wine of breed, opulence and concentration/intensity - amber at the edge and full of life - the nose reveals coffee, black fruits, cocoa and a hint of spice/herbs - in the mouth there are soft tannins, sweet black fruits, coffee and an ongoing hint of herbs and spice in the long finish. I am not a cabernet/bordeaux drinker prefering burgundies and pinots but this was a memorable wine and my rating may be low. A great wine with great food and great friends. |

8/12/2010 - elliotgl wrote: 97 pointsThis was the topping of a wonderful evening of GREAT friends - a bunch of us old folks - great food and even greater wine. This was my WOTN that Jay brought - interesting that the bottles had their original price stickers of $15.99. This port is still a baby at 47 - no bricking and still very dark ruby in the glass offering a nose of cherries, berries, caramel, coffee and other things that were difficult for me to identify - In the mouth there were the flavors of the nose plus a momentary hint of alcohol and then the taste and mouth feel of cotton candy - almost ethereal - which continued into a finish that lasted forever and then some. I have had some older Fonsecas dating into the 20's but this was the most memorable. |

The finish has an added mineral component that adds further complexity - The finish is fine, intense and persistant - truly a great wine. |

10/16/2007 - elliotgl wrote: 96 pointsThe Chardonnay of the night - seamless, elegant, great fruit-citrus,peach/nectarine but the acid was subdued which fortells not a long life ahead - Out shone the 2002 Marcassin 3 Sisters and the 2004 Sbragia. Was the equal of the 1982 Cheval Blanc in its own right! Only the 1975 Yquem edged them both. |

8/5/2010 - elliotgl wrote: 96 pointsThis was a suprise in that I thought I had drunk the last of these. When I opened the bottle I was certain it was gone based on color - a fairly deep gold but the nose pronounced me as one of little faith. There was a nose of faint citrus, light oak, peanuts? and popcorn? The wine itself was one of sheer elegance in the mouth yeilding a seamless aray of citrus flavors surrounded by oak that had evolved into butter and a softness that continued into a very long and persistant finish. The amazing thing about this wine is that it still had life and was no where near gone as it continued to hold together through out dinner. This has to be one of the best 2 or 3 California chardonnays I have ever had. |

In the glass a straw colored yellow that offered a lovely nose of nuts, meyer lemon, faint popcorn and butter. In the mouth a seamless wine offering flavors of citrus and creamy butter with a surprising amount of acidity for a 1997 Cali chardonnay. The acidity carried the flavors with precision and length into a very nice finish - I can not imagine this wine getting any better so if you still have any drink up! |

In the mouth a wine of breed with plum, chocolate and blackberry showing a ripeness that envelopes the underlying tannins - the classic Michael Broadbent quote " an iron fist in a velvet glove ".The flavors last into a finish that goes on and on.An obvious great wine that may last forever, or almost forever that I think will be better as it softens - I know it will out live me. |

8/11/2010 - elliotgl wrote: 96 pointsThis was the other red wine served at our dinner and for me was preferred over the Haut Brion - but I know others had a differing opinion. In the glass again a dark ruby not showing almost 30 years of age - a nose of dark fruit, plum, cocoa and cola - not coca cola. In the mouth a fuller profile then the Haut Brion with plum, cassis, cola and chocolate flavors carring through into a long elegant persistant finish. When I commented to our host Jay that I preferred the Margaux he summed it up by saying " we are splitting hairs" which we/I was. But that is what makes the world go round. |

In the mouth a wine of substance that is seamless and focused yielding dark fruits, raspberry, spice and soft tannins that carry through a long and impressive finish. Will only get better! Bravo!!!!! |

A really impressive pinot!!! |

A very nice wine for a non Bordeaux drinker. |

In the mouth - butter, citrus, anise and a minerality that is carried by good acidity to a long, long finish. There is excellent concentration and depth of flavor. The problem right now this all requires a lot of coaxing as this wine is still very tight - My next try will be 2012! |

This was the third chardonnay of the evening and the clear WON. |

11/24/2007 - elliotgl wrote: 94 pointsThe problem with wine racks that are 2 bottles deep is that things get lost - But once in awhile I am thankful - On the nose aromas of Burgundy barnyard, earth, black fruits and cherry cordial - In the mouth very full and at the same time elegant, a 29 year old woman who knows she is something very special - expressive tastes of plum, leather, raspberry and faint spice all intergrated in a very, very nice finish - I have had DRC wines that were not as memorable. |

10/26/2007 - elliotgl wrote: 93 pointsThis vintage 2005 is quite different than 2003 which was a more opulent wine - This is an outstanding wine of elegence and finesse - a reticent nose of lemon oil, tropical fruit, nuts and oak - in the mouth much the same with the oak turning to vanilla and a finish that just goes on and on - If you want big flavors this is not for you but you owe it to yourself to try a bottle - These folks fashion one great chardonnay!!! |
