1990 Cosentino Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve

Napa Valley more

10/16/2016 - wineman73 Likes this wine: 100 points

The 1990 Cosentino Cab Reserve was 1 of 3 amazing wines shared with a family friend over a great steak dinner. An epic trio of California cabs, which included 1989 Forman and a 1994 Spottswoode that was provided by Dave. I had the 1990 Cosentino Cab Res three days prior and was amazed by the expressiveness and finish. I previously scored this wine a conservative 96 points. Nevertheless, I decided to try again this night with friends. The 1990 Cosentino Cab Reserve did not disappoint! The color was a garnet red with no bricking. The nose was bursting and strongly expressed cherry, dark red fruits and a hint of boysenberry. The mouth feel was like suede on the palate. It had an amazing feel that was medium-light weight and explosive. The taste was surreal with flavors of dark red fruit, cherry and lavender. The finish lasted for what seemed like a minute with a pronounced flavor of cherry. The wine is ready and should be had over the next 2 years. I am very happy to have 2 more in my cellar :) The 1990 Cosentino was just 13% alc, the Forman was 12.9% and the Spottswoode was 13.9%. It made us wonder if these newer style cabs with 14.8+ percent alcohol will drink like this in 20+ years. I suspect no, which will leave us wine snobs with lost decades that were seduced by the quick fruit forward gratification sought after in today's modern Napa Cabs. The 1990 Cosentino is undoubtedly one of the best Napa Caps I have ever had. I have never scored a wine 100 points, but what the hell! Is there really a difference between 98-100? Lastly, this wine tasting night was epic, which provided an experience that will go down as the three best cabs I have ever had at the same time. Score 100

2014 Fairchild Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Stones No. 2 Pritchard Hill

Napa Valley more

8/10/2017 - wineman73 Likes this wine: 98 points

Fairchild Wine Tasting (St Helena California): Wow, Wow, Wow! This has to be in the top 5 of all the wines I have had in my life. I would not normally be that over the top with a young cab, but this one made a lasting impression. I have had the opportunity to drink a lot of very nice “cult” cabs and prestigious first growth Bordeaux with many scoring 100 points. I recently did a double blind tasting of 10 different 95+ Napa cabs from the epic 2013 vintage. Although this one is from 2014, it was above and beyond any of those 2013 95+ Napa cabs. The wine was a dark, deep garnet red with a nose that was subtle compared to what it had to offer inside of the mouth. The taste was an explosion of flavors with nice gripping tannins. The fruit did not overwhelm like the other young cult cabs I have tried in the past. Flavors of ripe blueberries, blackberries, milk chocolate and a hint of leather tantalized the taste buds. On the nose and palate, the wine did not give the impression that it was overly extracted. The presentation of flavors seemed to be diverse and perfect! This is fruit from prestigious Pritchard Hill vines and it did not disappoint! Awesome acidity and structure that had a lasting finish. A finish that seemed like 2 minutes. This is a wine that will be amazing with 10 years of age. I would not be surprised if this is scored 100 points down the road! I can only imagine the layers of secondary flavors that will evolve from this one! Too bad we have no time machine to 2024. Nevertheless, patience will be highly rewarded. Incredible!! Score 98

2013 Forman Cabernet Sauvignon

Napa Valley more

9/28/2016 - wineman73 Likes this wine: 97 points

The 2013 Forman was decanted 3 hours prior to tasting and was part of a double blinded taste off between 6 other 2013 Napa Cabs that scored 95 points + from professional reviewers. Visually, the wine color was eggplant with medium viscosity. It had an herbaceous aroma and expressed fresh mint, thyme and red fruits. The taste was spectacular! It provided a medium mouth feel that was velvety and long lasting. Complex layers of flavor that yielded mostly fresh mint, cherry pie, currant and a hint of eucalyptus. This wine stood out in a blind tasting against the other 6! This was also the clear winner for the three other tasters! This will age nicelyl This is a cellar choice. A must have 2013 Cab that does not get much press. Back the truck up on this one! Score 97

2015 Fairchild Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Stones No. 3 Tench Vineyard

Napa Valley more

8/10/2017 - wineman73 Likes this wine: 97 points

Fairchild Wine Tasting (St Helena California): The last wine of our tasting with Lawrence Fairchild was the 2015 Stone 3. Lawrence was very generous to let us try his newest offering from Fairchild wine. The Stone 3 is a wine that is made with fruit from the famous Tenche vineyard. This is another incredible offering from Fairchild! The nose was very pronounced with beautiful red and dark fruits. It also had very good acidity. It was not overly extracted, which allowed for an exposure to many different flavors of dark fruit and hints of leather and spice. This one is also one that will evolve wonderfully over time. These are wines that will age well compared to many other small production Napa cabs. Another great wine! Score 97

The color was a garnet red with no bricking. The wine had a beautiful nose that expressed cocoa powder, cherry and tobacco. The mouth feel was very smooth and medium weight with small amount of tannins. The taste provided flavors of bittersweet chocolate, cherry, raspberry, and a hint of tar and tobacco. The wine had also a very good finish. The wine still has some life. It is ready and should be had over the next 5 years. I The 1994 Spottwoode was 13.9% alc, the Forman was 12.9%, and the 1990 Cosentino was just 13% alc. It made us wonder if these newer style cabs with 14.8+ percent alcohol will drink like this in 20+ years. I suspect no, which will leave us wine snobs with lost decades that were seduced by the quick fruit forward gratification sought after in today's modern Napa Cabs. The 1994 Spottswoode is a very nice cab and is made the right way. For those who are into Napa Cabs, this is one you should have in your cellar with several different vintages. Corison Winery Tasting (St Helena California): This wine had a more purplish hue to its visual presentation. I was excited to try the 2013 because it was such a great vintage. I have also tasted many 2013 California cabs that were really nice. This one did not disappoint! The nose contained flavors of vanilla, wet stone and rich dark fruits. Awesome acidity and structure. The taste provided flavors of vanilla, cherry and bitter chocolate. This is one that will age well and I suspect will have more flavors once aged. 8/10/2017 - wineman73 Likes this wine: 94 points

Fairchild Wine Tasting (St Helena California): After tasting the Sigaro, I was expecting a more masculine wine. I was pleasantly surprised by its "dandy" characteristics. It was neither masculine or feminine. After seeing, smelling and tasting, the wine seemed to take on characteristics of both, which was awesome! The color was a dark ruby red with medium viscosity. The nose was filled with scents of violets, boysenberry, blueberry and other dark fruits. The taste provided a balance of acidity and mouth feel, which was not heavy and overly extracted. The tannins were neutral. I would describe as a 3 on a scale of 1-5 with 5 being strong tannins. You were able to taste fruit in a way, which allowed you to appreciate the other characteristics of the wine. There were significant layers of rich chocolate covered cherries, graphite, and blackberry. A nice finish as well! This is a very good wine! If drinking now, I would decant for at least 3 hours. Delicious! Score 94
