The bottle did not seem flawed, just bad. No one thought it was a good wine. Poor flavors that are not true to a Sonoma Zin.

The fruit has turned mostly flowery, with some thin raspberry/cherry. The balance of the front is quite nice and smooth with a light to medium body. Those flavors showed throughout and blended in the middle and finish with a quite fine but very dry tannin. Had this for our daughter's 40th Birthday and have four more to follow over the coming years. I look forward to it.

Double decanted and back in fridge 12 hrs, and the wine seemed to fully open within an hour after serving. Dark ruby color. Vanilla, dark cherry, balsamic on the nose. Blackberry, dark cherry, licorice, and earth give way to stewed plum and a 35-40 sec finish. This is nice but really would have liked it at 1/2 price when it comes to QPR.

A nice wine with a fruity front of Sangiovese Grosso. but that is it as far as it resembles a Brunello to me. It was not highly integrated , the fruit was not layered and the finish was not smooth and elegant. The finish was very dry, somewhat gripping, and very long.

the 2014 is much bigger (Oh Really??) than the previous vintages that I have enjoyed. Quite nice drinking now but still tight as a drum. This one is going to quite complex and bold in the next 2-5 years. Time in the glass didn't really loosen it up at all. Black raspberry , blackberry and blueberry all strung together. and a briary and tickling middle, followed by a high strung tannin on the finish. Hold this at least a year if you can.

Tastes of cedar, tar, smoke, spice, pepper, with blackberry notes. A bargain at WineAccess for $16/btl. At that price, I'm glad that I bought a case! The "96 points" label on the bottle is just a bit pretentious!

  • Comment posted by wtianseter:

6/25/2017 3:15:00 PM - Just a comment on the 96 rating; it was James Halliday whom I believe to be a good and honest evaluator but I judge he has an extremely strong bias toward big fruity wines of Australian Heritage. Once he hits a 90 on an Australian wine I start discounting at least one point for every two points. However to me he seems to be reasonably calibrated to other pros on other terroirs like French, Italian, and South African wines when I see his ratings.

Opened to breathe. Hot nose with oak and hint of tobacco, maybe mushrooms. Red berries, more oak, spices, hint of black pepper, and an acid finish. I like the complexity and QPR, but this is really hitting me as a medium bodied, not full bodied red. Easy to drink and a crowd pleaser for sure, but when I bought a case two years ago, I expected this to improve with age; so far its evolution has been a tad disappointing.

My score is based on the first glass which was consumed in about 5 or 10 minutes. Nice smoky oak on nose and up front with medium dark fruit and a light vanilla and tannin. The next glasses were not at all complex and much more fruit forward and rated about 86. I really like that first glass but it all seemed to fall apart quickly.
On day 3 the wine was all fruit and alcohol just muddled together-- still drinkable but not a wine of any significant character..... rate an 80. All this put together leads me to say a bottle to buy and drink now and quickly once opened. Recommend no aeration or decanting

3/29/2014 - wtianseter wrote: 81 points

Had my bottles in my cellar for about 6 months to settle down.

I had forgotten that Durif was Petit Sirah and I did not recognize this wine as PS....Is that the terroir showing through or just crappy grapes?

Color was medium dark ruby and nose lightly fruity, more like a Pinot Noir. To me the only thing that stood out was the long tart dry tannic finish that held on to a bit of the fruitiness.

I am not a fan of this wine but I have 2 more bottles in my cellar; we'll see how they respond. The name here is anything but representing the quality of this wine.

Based on this bottle, don't waste your money and go buy yourself some Bogle Petit Sirah, you will spend less and have a significantly better wine.

For those lucky enough to be holding a well-cellared bottle of this wine, I can only say...enjoy! Medium-to-deep golden and very complex, it struts aromas and flavors of honeysuckle, citrus peel, butterscotch, apple pie and baking spice. Full-bodied, almost unctuous, it is a lush, mouthfilling combination of creamy structure and vibrant acidity (which hides its 14.0% alcohol well). Solid in the middle, it concludes with a long, crisp finish. Few will ever experience a Napa Valley Chardonnay with this type of age-worthiness. In years past (and now), Hanzell and Stony Hill could rival this bottling...but even those fine producers would be pressed to outdo it. Drink now-2018.

11/24/2013 9:12:00 PM - Did you aerate your wine in this tasting? My bottles, while nice have not shown this well (See my last tasting note, in particular). I got the wine at a fantastic price because they had been stored several years upright in the liquor store so it may be a bit stressed, but this last bottle had strong signs the wine might benefit from aeration.

I bought this 6 years ago and as an experiment I decided to hold and age this in my natural cellar until it reached 10 years old. Well folks the experiment was a stunning success. I drink 97% red and the whites I do buy are usually consumed immediately so I wanted to try and age a Chard but did not want to invest in Grand Cru burgs so I aged a reputable Napa Chard.
Color was a noble brass, way different than any other white I ever had. On the nose was nutmeg and mango. On the palate it was velvet butterscotch with aged dried apricot. I had the pleasure to share this with my Wife's best friend who drinks 100% white wines, usually high-end Cali Chards and it was an eye-opener for her as well. Will have to stash some more Napa Chards and invest in some White Burgs for the cellar.

The wine is a nice blue-plum red. Nose is a very fruity with some chocolate notes. The wine has a really nice dry texture with lots of muddled berry fruits and a bitter cassis mid-palate and a smooth oaky flavor. The finish is primarily oak and tannin. To be sure this is a nice wine but not as good as I expected; there is not enough layering nor does it strike me as very complex. My perspective is if a wine hits $50 retail, it should unquestionably break the 90 point barrier; this was not a 90 pointer in my opinion.
My wife and I had this by itself, and with rare beef tenderloin, sweet potato, and an avocado/pomegranate seed “salad”. It did ok with all these items especially the beef but the pomegranate seeds washed out much of the fruitiness of the wine.

ok, nose a bit closed, but some mild fruit. Taste, very litte, could have been the bottle, but it had very little fruit, harsh tannins, and a strong window cleaner note throughout. We dumped it after half a glass.

2/3/2013 10:15:00 PM - Eric: I read your review looking back at other vintages after I tasted the 2010. I would encourage you to never throw a bottle out like you say you did on this wine unless you are sure it is bad (i.e. Corked, Turned to vinegar) I think what you call strong window cleaner taste may be what I call a metallic taste. That metallic taste, I find, tends to be one that really masks the flavors that can be hidden in the wine. Two days sitting on the counter and the distracting taste was gone. I've recently run into a large number of wines that have improved significantly with simple sitting in a re-corked bottle over several days.
I started doing this after reading "Love by the Glass" by Gaiter and Brecher and I think it has helped me educate my palate and figure out if some wines may need time to develop.
    Happy tasting!
Life is too short to drink bad wine but don’t be afraid to taste a “bad” wine over time—It may be we just opened a great wine too early…You can always throw it out later!
