2012 Gérard Boulay Sancerre Monts DamnésSauvignon Blanc more |
12/4/2014 - Tim Heaton Likes this wine: NRYoung, almost painfully so at this stage. Minerals, sea spray, chalky soil, anise, lemon zest. Even with 2 hours in decanter, this showed very little depth. Medium(-) body, with avg toward avg plus acidity; disjointed, shallow. Pleasurable, but nothing exciting; let this rest another 2-3 years. Nothing like the notes and scores before this would suggest, perhaps a little off. 13,0% abv. My first of a few from this vintage, and I won't be reloading. |

4/12/2014 - Finare Vinare wrote: 91 pointsElegant, understated sauvignon blanc variety aromas. Salty-mineral and pure, only slightly yeasty. Transparent on the palate, with fine-tuned acidity, slight spiciness and lots of saltiness (some fennel & aniseed notes) but no bitterness at all. Outstanding, ripe sancerre - a reminder of what's possible in this (often underperforming) appellation. Should develop well for a couple of years. |

2/9/2022 - JJYoyo Likes this wine: 93 pointsBeautiful balance. The style is more loose knit and with less acidity than many Sancerres, to say nothing of tooth shattering NZ Sauvignon Blancs. I happened to love it. Taste was like a hypothetical candied grapefruit, with a little lemongrass and geranium scents as well. For those who want a slightly rounder version of Sancerre |

6/10/2021 - huse Likes this wine: 93 pointsComplex, mineral driven Sauvignon Blanc wine (100 percent), sourced from one of the best vineyards sites in the Sancerre appellation, the steepest part of the ‘Cul de Beaujeu-cru’ (a 0.75 hectares plot of 30- to 60-year-old vines, located in the tiny hamlet of Chavignol, three kilometers west of the city of Sancerre). The wine was fermented with natural yeasts and aged for nine months on its fine lees in used oak barrels and stainless-steel tanks. Youthful straw-yellow in color and an exciting nose revealing scents of white blossoms, grapefruit, lemon peel and also some hints of freshly cut grass and fennel. The medium-bodied and extremely well-balanced palate is marked by concentrated and luscious gooseberry and pineapple fruit, great depth and a wonderful supporting acidity. Long mineral finish with a slight touch of honey. The wine is already drinking very well now, yet definitely no problem for aging. Optimal enjoyment: now–2028. |

10/6/2021 - ash_then_chase Likes this wine: 91 pointsGrapefruit peel, honeysuckle, slate, and wet rocks. Opens into stone fruit, apricot. So much in the way of minerality, including several descriptors that are hard to name. Bright, lengthy finish and an acidic tension that tickles the tongue. |

6/13/2018 - jnewman77 Likes this wine: NRThis is delicious. Its a bit riper and richer than a truly "classic" Sancerre sure, but its quite tasty. Ripe lemon, lime, bell pepper, fresh cut grass, hints of gardenia, and crushed stone. The palate definitely has ripe and rich qualities, but there is plenty of acidity and extract that still let this feel lithe and fresh. Its hard not to have another sip... which is always a good thing |

5/19/2015 - thebonnydooner wrote: 92 pointsFriggin delicious. Clear and bright, with a pale lemon straw colour. Very minerally and crisp on the nose, not showing much fruit, just a tinge of citrus and apple. Palate is long, fresh, crisp and delicious. Loads of apple and lemon acidity with a nice mineral spine to the fruit. Lingers on the palate for almost a minute. Lovely, lovely finish. |

5/24/2014 - Tim Heaton Likes this wine: NRStructured, fresh and delicious, classic La Comtesse; it also wants to keep things close to the vest right now. Much improved after two hours aerating in decanter. Brilliant textures, very pure fruits and minerals lifted right off the seabed floor. Only a week after I had the '07, this looks like it has the stuffing to end up in (roughly) the same place in 4-5 more years. highly recommended 4 people found this helpful, do you? Very delicious but without the ultimate wow-factor. |

2/14/2016 - fingers Likes this wine: NRJust as lovely as the bottle 3 months ago. Great mineral and glycerin texture with crisp lime and citrus flavors. Accompanying everything from appetizer to entree to dessert (key lime pie), this proves how versatile a good, minerally SB can be. Easily polished off between the two of us for Valentines dinner. |

7/11/2020 - Eudemis Likes this wine: NR13% alcohol. Rather unusual cork with the top and bottom covered in some film; is the idea to protect against TCA ? Other than that, the cork is good and dense. Bright translucent cherry colour. |

3/10/2021 - Gargantua Likes this wine: NRFeels almost as compacted as a young Riesling--lager-like nose, with an almost floral apricot pit aroma and a tiny bit of rubbing alcohol that whisk by before a big mineral tidepool. I really think this needs time to knit together. Big fan of this wine producer and vineyard. |

12/21/2014 - Bob H Likes this wine: NRLight yellow in the glass; wow, what a nose - almost a mix of sea brine and petrol. Clearly the most interesting, and potentially divisive, nose of the quartet, but I have to admit I love it! |

3/27/2018 - Richnstacy Likes this wine: 92 pointsDelicious. Nose is complex with bright citrus lemon lime, melon and flint and a hint of honeysuckle. Zesty lemon flavor up front. Smooth thru mid palate with layers of citrus and slight creaminess. Long finish. I have one more bottle which I'll probably wait 5 years to taste. |

12/3/2018 - Kirk Grant wrote: NRThis is just lovely...initially it seemed to be all power and oomph. However after a good 30 minutes in the glass it's settled down and transitioned into a thing of beauty and elegance. The nose offers up yellow apple, lime, chalk, and quince. On the palate the acidity crashes in almost immediately like a wave against a rocky shoreline followed by lithe hints of lime, green apple, leading into the mid palate with pineapple, and passion fruit closing up along the finish. What a lovely wine. I like this so much I'll probably serve it at my wedding as one of the whites...Outstanding!!!! |

5/1/2015 - MarkinBaltimore Likes this wine: NRAll of the Boulay 2013 Sancerres I have tasted have been spectacular. My favorite is the Clos de Beaujue, which is slightly leaner than this. The Monts Damnes has a relatively large amount of baby fat. It is approachable and even slightly sweet upon first tasting. At first, one's impression is of gorgeous fruit with a dense, mineral-laden back end. After about two hours, it begins to express a panoply of flavors – smoke, citrus, juicy red fruit. This is great winemaking at a price-point that I think few can approach. |
