9/10/2012 - johneagle wrote: 92 pointsThis is getting very good now. A point or two off because it still has that slight GPL coarseness, but is a delightful drink. Double decanted at 6.30 and continues to come on at 9pm. Needs plenty of air. Tannins a bit green for my taste, and overpower the fruit a little, but I'm being picky - this is a very good glass of claret just approaching readiness. Give it lots of time in a decanter - 3 hours +. I tasted the last glass after 4 hours and this was as good as it is going to get. DO NOT POP AND POUR! |

6/7/2014 - johneagle Does not like this wine: 75 pointsThe first bottle of 5 dozen. Very disappointing indeed. Overripe and over extracted. At first, chocolate and stewed plums. Muddled and not particularly pleasant. I don't think it will improve. Will try another bottle or two but I think it's one to sell. Another casualty of the Parker influence? Such a pity, the 2000 was terrific quality for the money. Got quite a bit of the 09 too, I wonder if that's as bad as this too. 2 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (1) |

12/29/2023 - johneagle Likes this wine: 94 pointsStill very young, but charming. Lots of delicious acidity (were the other tasters complaining about sweetness drinking something else?). So long, flavour lasting a couple of minutes in the mouth. Citrus, quince and melon and and and.... 5 left. Very special |

5/6/2015 - johneagle Likes this wine: 89 pointsOK but given how good 2001 is, far from the heights of Rieussec or Suduiraut. A bit one dimensional. Don't leave these too long 2 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (1) |

3/24/2021 - johneagle Likes this wine: 90 pointsI think some people don't get the ethereal nature of good old wine. Yes, it's not what it was or might have been. I feel so privileged to be able to enjoy wine like this. I learnt about wine mostly from my father; we would have lunch together and drink claret, 1970 1966 and 1961 of the same chateau. As you tasted the older wines, each one tasted younger than the old before. But I remember clearly how the 1966s were, Palmer and Ducru especially, and they were better, but had the same delicacy of this 89 Telegraphe. I was very lucky. Palmer 1961 was magnificent. I still have one left, and a few other 61s. Takes courage and the right moment to open one. Ducru 66 a few months ago was magical. It still had a core of elegance and I wonder if wine made now at the same level will age in the same way, or last as long. 1 person found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (1) |

1/9/2014 - johneagle Does not like this wine: 75 pointsI'm surprised at all the positive notes. I was promised great things for this and this bottle was very disappointing. Thin, sharply acidic, not a lot of fruit and no length. Vinegary strawberries with a farmyard element. Unpleasant. 1 person found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (5) |

7/21/2013 - johneagle wrote: 88 pointsNot at all characteristic and rather brown and fusty. Disappointing. After an hour and a half in the decanter it had sharpened up and become more like a recognisable Pauillac, but still... far from as good as I would expect from GPL in a tolerable year |
