If you told me this was 10 year old CA Merlot I wouldn’t have blinked. To its credit it doesn’t have the ‘03 roasted thing going on (I find northern Medoc esp St Estephe to be best bet in ‘03), but the anonymous soft black plum fruit doesn’t have a lot of Medoc character. Still a touch of tannin. B-

Decanted for an hour, but it needed at least two hours to open up and for the tannins to soften at which point the complex character of this wine emerged. Perhaps would be better in a couple of years.

Pretty nice. Served with braised short ribs and it was a good pairing.
It took about 2 hours to settle out into something pleasant to drink - quite harsh on opening. With air it showed some fruit, not strong, but present, a little plumish and kind of juicy. But it showed some nice cigar box flavors, a lot of mintyness, some rocky mineral flavors. It was all well-balanced and smooth. Did not decant and it threw some sediment at the end.

Fully mature, there is a voluptuous character to the earthy, dark, red fruits, with touches of wet earth, tobacco, thyme and spice. Medium/full bodied, with round textures, freshness and a nice feeling in the, deep red, berry finish, there is no reason for further aging.

Very nice surprise. It was nice and complex on the nose, and sooth and silky on the toungue. St Estephe was the place 2B in 2003.
