2016 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco

Nebbiolo more

8/30/2020 - farinas Likes this wine: 93 points

Dinner at Il Gabbiano watching the boats swarm by. This is a stunning summer wine! Ruby colored with an effusive bouquet of strawberries, menthol and some earth. The palate has nice yet firm tannins with red fruit and a soft medium finish. This wine is light on the body yet plenty fragrant, pretty much Burgundian in style but very smooth giving a sweet impression. At this price range need to stock up.

Nice wine here, with lots of fresh, sweet, juicy black cherries, blackberry, pepper and earthy qualities. The tannins are ripe and smooth, finishing with ample fresh, ripe dark berries. Like all Montelena Estate Cabernet Sauvignon wines, this will probably be much better in a decade.

Good Red from burgundy, light to medium bodied, crisp, good complexity with notes of plump, cherry, and vanilla. Ends with supple tannis. Goes well with cheese, drink by itself or with seafood.

2001 Penfolds Grange

South Australia Shiraz Blend, Syrah more

2/26/2018 - farinas Likes this wine: NR

SobeWFF. My first experience with Grange and it’s definitely a must have if you can afford it. 100% American oak. Grange brings a sweet and racy dark fruits sprinkled with a dusty salinity that is extremely rewarding and refreshing at the same time. This 2001 is aging well with tertiary flavors of dried herbs and smoked meats, and a port-like disposition coming along and a Bourbon-like tinge of sweet must. The palate is fat and I mean it in a good way, chewy fatty tannins that are sweet and a joy to have. This is a generational wine for your grandkids - superb.

SobeWFF. Spends 12 months in large vats. Fruit is sourced from Barossa and McLaren but this year includes Adelaide Hills. 96/7 Shiraz Cab mix. The cooler Adelaide Hills fruit shines through on the bouquet with a floral fresh racy berries. Thick chewy tannins on the palate with hints of espresso and black pepper. Quite similar to Central coast CA Syrah.

Not the opulence and depth one comes to expect from hyped up 100 pt by Parker, however nevertheless it is a muscular wine with lots of fruits, oak, and sweet tannins. It lacks a bit of depth which I suppose can come with age.

Medium nose of earth and crushed fruit, not as effusive as other Howell. Delicious flavors of red berries macerated with dark earth. Sweet tannins and medium to long perfumed finish. Excellent wine although just a notch below outstanding.

Lots of dark cool fruits and black tea, with some good flesh on the palate, lifted acidity and nice slightly carbonated finish. Like a wild Pinot Syrah blend. Very strong offering for this entry level wine.

Flowers, crushed rocks, hints of truffle and red fruits are the first thing you notice, before moving to softer, polished, plums, a medium bodied palate and fresh, red berries in the finish. I am sure 5 years in the cellar will add a lot to this wine.

Truffle, licorice, coffee, boysenberry and fresh cherries couple with soft, polished tannins and minerality. The plush wine ends with a silky, blackberry and licorice note. Give this a few years to soften and add more complexity. This is one of the top wines from a very difficult year.

100 Point (Parker or other) Wine Dinner Organized by Steve for 6 "Wine Guys" (The Prime Rib, Philadelphia): From 375ml bottle, the cork was wet and slippery coming out and then broke off near the end, so I feared total oxidation before tasting this after decanting at 2pm, then replacing in the bottle and traveling to Philadelphia for dinner. The nose was slightly oxidized but that seemed to blow off in the glass shortly after pouring. The wine was a deep copper/apricot color. The nose and palate seemed to reflect that with Huge grilled apricot flavor, honey and caramelized sugar. This was unctuous in your mouth and yet still showing some brightness of flavor. The finish was extremely long. I have been waiting for probably 30 years to have this wine as it was one of my first purchases of a Beerenauslese from a friend's cellar in the mid-1980's. It was worth the wait. Extraordinary!

Dark in color, with notes of coffee bean, incense, smoke, licorice, earth and ripe blackberries, the wine is concentrated, masculine and refined. With flavor and power matched with tannins and intensity, give it 5 to 10 years to develop, soften and come together.

Hitting the Big 3-0. (Imperial Treasure Super Peking Duck, Paragon): Fresh, elegant Champagne. Very pleasant. Sweet nose showed ripe lemons, red apples and apple rind, along with some toasty spice, a bit of earth and just that touch of umami. There were little scents of herb and pepper floating around on top as well. Palate was crisp, clean and balance, with a nice sense of fruity sweetness and clean, crystallined fruit flavours - green apple shading into pineapple notes. Finish was mid-length, with touches of spice. Nice, almost too "nice", so that it almost lack a sense of personality. Still though, great elegance and very nice balance. Yummy start to the meal.
