2010 Jemrose Viognier Egret Pond

Celebrating Ben's birthday (Goosefoot, Chicago IL): Nose: There is a real fatness to the nose along with gorgeous tones of white florals, lychees, hot oils, white fruits, and some sea spray tones.

Taste: Medium/full bodied with medium acidity. The feel is fatter with bigger and balanced tones of white florals, hot oils, white fruits, sea spray tones, and some vanilla on the back end.

Overall: This is a really good viognier. It has a fatness on both the nose and palate with good depth as well.

I can't improve upon the previous note as far as descriptors, but will note that my bottle was labeled 2011 but the cork was imprinted with 2010. I believe this is in fact the 2011 because the nose is admirably focused and the finish perhaps a touch narrow, at least at this point, compared to how I recall the 2010. This has become one of my favorite California wines. Update: this is definitely the 2011 per correspondence from the owner. The perfume essence is more pronounced on day 2 from remaining third. Outstanding Viognier, already delicious and likely to improve in the short term.

S FL WS Group tastes 1988 Bordeaux (and others) (Jupiter, FL): This did not show as well as when last tasted at the winery as it was poured into a decanter and then almost immediately tasted and consumed. Its youth requires more air time right now, but its wonderful meaty and smoky nose started to come around in some of my last sips. Fairly full bodied, with lush dark fruit, but avoids some of the extraction and tar notes often found in New World syrah.

Excellent bottle, drank over 3 days with each day better than the last. Aromas jump at you from the glass, dark berries, also getting the eucalyptus/mint and a hint of spice. Dark and deep purple in the glass, full bodied with dusty, but suave tannins and a long finish, great balance here. Already good now, interested to see where this goes in a few years.

This initial Gloria's Gem from Jim Mack's Jemrose was stunning. I can't remember who the wine maker was. We opened it for our Oscar party and it was a perfect choice. Rich and balanced , the tannins nicely softened. Plenty of fruit left.... no formal notes but we all enjoyed it.

As with the '08, gorgeous, rich mouthfeel - Merlot-centric, and a bit more rustic than the fruitier '08. Excellent wine...

Intense aromatics without being too heady...on the palate, the wine isn't too viscous though the concentration of tropical fruit and perfume is definitely on the intense side...acid is crisp....not much oak - 20% neutral

Honeysuckle aromatic, with some wax in the texture. Can really pick up the anise note this time, too. Apricot, orange blossom and again the slick texture. Showed well tonight.

I just opened this tonight, and what a fantastic nose it has, full of dark berries and fragrant flowers, and I think blueberry pie describes it well, as there is the crust component. On the palate, it's full of more dark fruits, but also a great smoked meat flavor, and a very rich mouthfeel - weighty and silky. The finish is extremely clean, and has more of the floral component in the finish. I can't believe this is fairly low abv for a CA Syrah - awesome stuff.

Poured through Vinturi and allowed to breathe for half an hour. Great nose of candied apple and blackberry pie, and in the mouth add black currant and caramel. The acidity carries the flavors from mid-palate all the way through the lengthy finish. Really quite delicious and a steal at Lot18's price. Has lots of time left for cellaring.

Nose of olive, pepper, beef, cherry, leather, plum, some slightly green mercaptan-type aromas, sandalwood, vanilla, chalk and chocolate. The mouth is creamy, with some slight raisin, blueberry, blackberry and pine
Nice fine grained tannins, good balance and long finish. Nice, interesting wine, shows the Syrah and the Merlot nicely. The raisin quality comes out more with air.

Jermose virtual Tasting (David T's Home): This had been decanted for two hours. Not sure if that helped or hurt this. My first time trying it. It seemed to be in a bit of a dumb phase. The nose is very tight, but with some coaxing, there is some cocoa, dark cherries and a bit of grilled meats. On the palate, it is more open, but still primary. Cherries and raspberries. I think there is more here. As it drank, it was very good, but I just think there is something else luring underneath.

Jermose virtual Tasting (David T's Home): Outstanding wine and the unanimous favorite of the Jemrose lineup. This is a very deep, cool climate, California Syrah. The nose is deep, like a well where you can't see the bottom. Boysenberries, violets, some black pepper. Great texture. Very smooth. Black raspberry fruit that started to unwind in the glass to show some complexity. Still needs some time. Lovely wine.

Jermose virtual Tasting (David T's Home): Silvery gold in color. The nose has a fair amount of vanilla in it and also some fresh cut lumber. I am told this saw no new oak, but it still picked some up. Also some tropical fruit. Slippery texture which was good. Great acidity here although I get a touch of rounded edges. There is some heat and alcohol showing on the palate, but not an issue. Some nice tropical fruits with some tangerines. I confess to not liking many Cal Viogniers, but this is one of the better ones. I prefer the light floral versions of the Rhone. I did like this although the group liked it even more than I.

I can't say I've had a syrah-merlot blend before, and honestly tonight it reminded me of a young cab. Black currant and chocolate aromas on the nose, adding a bit of meat on the palate. Quite acidic, with medium+ tannins and dark fruit on the finish. This is very young, the score reflects its showing on day 1 with a two hour decant, but this needs more time in the cellar and I will update the note if it changes over the next day or two.
